Details are important…

26 10 2009

Actually, I’d say they are essential.  Now, I have to admit, I’ve learned this the hard way in life AND in leadership.  So many times in my own life and in my leadership (still trying to perfect this), I focus on the “big” things and forget the details.  But it’s the details that make the “big” stuff BIG.

Here is my analogy, please forgive the illustration, you’ll probably never forget it, and I’m NOT trying to be crude:  How many times have you had to use the restroom (the kind that takes more time), and sat down to do your business without checking to see if there was a toilet beneath you?  I’d bet the answer is NEVER!  BUT, how many times have you had to do the same thing, proceeded to sit down…do your business…WITHOUT checking to see if there was an ample supply of toilet paper!  BUSTED!  I’d assume it’s happened to all of us.  It’s an “Oh crap moment”!  (Pun intended)  And in that moment, it didn’t matter that the “big” thing was there (toilet) if the details were not (paper)…right?

Depending on when and where this happens, determines the consequences of the oversight.  At home with family?  No big deal.  Yell for help.  At home alone?  Slightly inconvenienced.  At a friends house?  A little embarrassing.  Meeting your future in laws at their house?  DISASTER!

Planning the sermon, songs, illustrations & videos for Sunday morning…toilet.  Making sure EVERYONE is informed of and ready for the transitions…paper!

Designing a KILLER graphic, invites and mass mailer for an event…toilet.  Making sure ALL the information is correct on the material…paper!

Having a GREAT Scripture and idea for a sermon…toilet.  Studying the background, language, audience and KNOWING how God wants this applied to YOUR congregation by intentional times of prayer and study…paper!

And the list goes on…you get the picture!

You may get away a few times with NOT checking for toilet paper in leadership, but eventually, you’re at the future in-laws and it’s a disaster!  I might have just coined a new staff phrase as we plan out events.  “Have you checked for toilet paper?”

Checking,

Jeff

This Sunday

14 10 2009

If you want to do some advanced reading for this Sunday’s message you can read Colossians 3:1-17.  As last Sunday, this weeks passage is LOADED with stuff that we just aren’t going to get to touch.  If you’re really wanting to be a teachers pet, read the book of Colossians.  Get the whole picture of what Paul was addressing.  Its only 4 chapters.  That’s it.  Just wanted to throw that opportunity out there.

Pastor Derek’s First Day

1 10 2009

IMG00998Well, I’d like to weblicly announce (get it?  publicly/weblicly) the official beginning of Pastor Derek as our full time paid e:kidz pastor!  About a month ago the decision was made that Derek would begin full time on Oct. 1st at Element Church.  Derek GRACIOUSLY accepted our offer and pursued the call of God to leave the King Soopers position he had and join the ministry team.  Derek is KILLING IT in e:kidz right now and can’t wait to watch the Lord work through him.  We are very excited to welcome him on the team.  Everyone welcome Pastor Derek.

Every Moses Needs A Joshua Pt. 3

17 09 2009

You can read pt. 1 and 2 HERE and HERE.

#3  Moses needed someone to invest in

Exodus 33:11  Inside the Tent of Meeting, the Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Afterward Moses would return to the camp, but the young man who assisted him, Joshua son of Nun, would remain behind in the Tent of Meeting.

I talked yesterday about one of the reasons Joshua may have remained behind at the Tent of Meeting.  Today, I want to look at a different one (or additional one).  I think Joshua ALSO remained behind because he wanted MORE of what Moses had.  Joshua saw in Moses SOMETHING DIFFERENT.  He saw that when Moses met with God, MOSES CHANGED!  I think Moses NEEDED a Joshua to invest in.  What HORRIBLE stewardship for Moses, to have the ability to speak to God FACE TO FACE, and not share that with a Joshua by investing in him.  Coaching them.  Discipling them.  Without a Joshua to share it with, I’m not sure Moses would have continued to receive it.

If you’re a pastor/leader this question should wreck you.  Does your time with God make Joshua’s want more of what you have?  Seriously!  Does the way you live, and God’s work IN you (not by you or through you) leave something desired by Joshua’s around you? Do you have a Joshua you’re WILLING to and INTENTIONALLY investing in?

If you are a Joshua, have you found a Moses to learn from?  Is there a pastor/leader in your life that is “rubbing off” on you?

Every Moses needs a Joshua,

Jeff

Every Moses Needs A Joshua Pt. 2

16 09 2009

You can read Part 1 HERE if you’d like.  Talking about some things that inspired and encouraged me in the relationship of Moses and Joshua during the Exodus and 40 year journey in the wilderness.

#2  Moses needed someone to stay behind sometimes

Exodus 33:11 says Inside the Tent of Meeting the Lord would meet with Moses face to face, as one meets with a friend.  Afterward, Moses would return to the camp, but the young man who assisted Moses, Joshua son of Nun would remain behind at the tent of meeting.

I’m actually going to talk about this from Joshua’s perspective later this week.  As I read this, I was reminded of something that was VITAL for Moses.  Inside the Tent of Meeting, he would receive “messages” from God.  After he met with God, it was his duty to go back and be God’s messenger.  The people needed ministered to.  They needed challenged.  They needed encouraged or they needed disciplined.  Moses NEEDED someone to stay behind at the tent of meeting.  He NEEDED someone, doing the “behind the scenes stuff” so he could go minister to the people.  Is that what Joshua was doing?

Moses NEEDED someone NOT looking for the glory, but wanting the glory of GOD to be revealed. I believe Joshua had a heart for the people to HEAR from God (through Moses), and to SEE God for who He was, so he stayed behind, releasing Moses to be God’s man.  I believe Joshua realized that when he stayed behind, the people moved forward.

Every pastor/leader BETTER understand how VITAL behind the scene Joshua’s are to the ministry.  WITHOUT Joshua’s who are willing to NEVER be the face of  ministry, ministries would never have a face.

If you are a Moses, when’s the last time you thanked your Joshua’s for “staying behind at the tent of meeting” so you can go out and be with the people?  If you’re a Joshua, are you WILLINGLY “staying” so your Moses can “go to the people”?  Do you realize that often when you stay, the people move forward?

Every Moses needs a Joshua,

Jeff

Hiring, Firing and Boards

1 09 2009

Thoughts from a recent Willow Creek Leadership Summit:  Session 2

Had a great session with some tips on hiring, firing and how to handle boreds (I mean boards).  The session was very creative in that they showed a video re-enactment of a hiring, firing and bored (oops, board) room meeting.  The roundtable of leaders then discussed how things could have been handled differently and better.  Really creative way to teach.

Hiring:

—  Cultural fit is HIGHLY important.  Can’t underestimate the cultural fit of someone you add to the team.  (That’s why I love hiring from within as much as possible)

—  In a time of need, it’s easy to MAKE a person fit a job so your need is filled.  (Fell for this one before)

—  First impressions are frequently wrong.  Don’t ALWAYS rely on them.

—  Spend time with them in normal environments of life.

—  Ask them the same question 3 times in 3 different ways.  See if there response is the same.

—  Ask specific follow up questions about their answers.

—  If you build the right culture you will attract the right people.

— Get a process of hiring.  The process will do its work.

— You would rather endure the pain of having someone NOT in a position, than having the WRONG person in that position.  (YEP)

Firing:

— Don’t consider it compassion NOT to be honest with someone.  Honesty can be the GREATEST compassion and can save heartache later.

—  A firing should NEVER be a surprise.  (barring legal/moral failure that necessitates immediate firing)

— If you’re honest with the employee, they are either going to improve or decide they can’t do it.

—  3 steps to firing:  1.  Retrain them  2.  Move them to a new position  3.  Retire them (nice way of firing them, lol)

—  The kindest form of management is the truth.

—  You need two people doing regular evaluations.  It offers a different perspective that one may not see.

Boards:

— A board may not function well because the wrong people are on that board.

— Make term limits for your board.  You decide what they are, but make sure you have them.

—  Every board has it’s own set of values and covenants.  Know what they are and make sure they are being followed.

—  You MUST build trust among a board.

—  Who NEEDS to be on the board?

—  Take 10 minutes every meeting to ask “How did we do?”

Learning,

Jeff
