A pastor created a huge backlash on Reddit when he left a note on a St. Louis Applebee’s restaurant bill refusing a gratuity to a server. The server, Chelsea Welch, took a photo of the bill and the note, on which the patron identified herself as a pastor, scratched out the tip and included the words, “I give God 10 percent, why should you get 18?” When the photo was posted on Reddit, it prompted more than 3,700 comments in less than a day.
“I hate waiting tables on Sunday because Christians after church are the WORST tippers.”
I’ve heard that said from former waiters & waitresses and current ones and it breaks my heart. Then I read an article last week, about a pastor that STIFFED their waiter, and I was FURIOUS! You can read the full article HERE, and I posted a picture of the bill to the left.
The pastors party had more than eight people, so the computer automatically added an 18% gratuity. The server said it was beyond her control. That if the party was less than 8 people the pastor could of given anything they wanted. But instead of leaving the automatic gratuity, or even ADDING some more out of generosity, they crossed out the tip and wrote a note: “I give God 10% why do you get 18?” SERIOUSLY??
The server posted a picture of the tip online, to which the pastor told the restaurant manager that their servers behavior had “ruined her reputation.” Ruined YOUR reputation? What about the reputation of JESUS whom you represent? SERIOUSLY?? That’s all I can think to say. SERIOUSLY??
The server was then fired by her resteraunt because of the complaint of the pastor for posting it online. Now, I’ll admit…posting the picture of the receipt online is probably a MAJOR no no, but come on! Maybe we should be more concerned about the reputation we are giving JESUS & the followers of Him than we are our own.
I sent this article to our team and said “THIS is why we tip well, even EXTRAVAGANTLY at times. We don’t want to be a part of a reputation of greed, but one of RADICAL generosity.” Church, one of our core values is “Leading the way in generosity.” I hope servers could say about the people of Element Church, “I LOVE waiting their tables because they are the BEST tippers.” And as Christians…WE SHOULD BE!!
