What Do You Pray For?

18 11 2012

Have you ever prayed for something that you KNEW would bring MORE pain into your life?  Paul did.  I’m not sure I could of asked for what Paul did in Ephesians 6.  These verses get lost sometimes because they come right after the armor of God, and we tend to focus on the armor.  We sing, “I’m in the Lord’s army” and get our flannel graph set all ready to show the different pieces of the armor.  (If you didn’t grow up in church I just completely lost you.  It’s ok, it’s not important to this conversation.)

Ephesians 6:19-20, And pray for me, too. Ask God to give me the right words so I can BOLDLY explain God’s mysterious plan that the Good News is for Jews and Gentiles alike.  20 I am in chains now, still preaching this message as God’s ambassador. So pray that I will keep on speaking BOLDLY for him, as I should.

Um Paul, you’re IN prison BECAUSE of your boldness.  Are you sure you want MORE BOLDNESS?  Ever catch that?  He was sitting in a prison, writing a letter to other Christians and asking for prayers for the VERY THING that put Him in prison.  I’d of been asking, “Pray for God to RESCUE me and SET ME FREE and PROTECT me and PROVIDE for me.”  Paul was essentially saying, “Pray I STAY in prison.”  WOW!!

For Paul, it was ALL about what could advance GOD’S Kingdom, not what could advance HIS!  So what do you pray for?  Are you praying for GOD’S Kingdom to advance IN SPITE of what that means for you, or for YOUR kingdom to advance in spite of what that means for GOD!  OUCH!

Not sure I want to say what I pray for,

Jeff
