What is your response when something threatens God’s instructions, His commands in your life? Do you flinch? Because you should. And the Bible even tells us to.
Proverbs 7:2 says, Obey my commands and live! Guard my instructions AS you guard your own eyes.
The first part of the verse says “OBEY.” Ok, but how do we do that? GUARD God’s instructions. Alright, and how do we do THAT? AS you guard your own eyes. Got it! Solomon is giving us the PERFECT example of how we guard God’s instructions, so we can obey God’s commands and LIVE!
Do you realize that we guard our eyes instinctively. That the tiniest particle can be detected coming toward the eye and your eye blinks automatically? Or if someone thrusts their hand in your face you flinch without even knowing it? It takes EXTREME effort and focus to NOT blink or NOT flinch when your eye is threatened. We naturally do it.
So, how do we respond in our lives when something threatens God’s instructions or God’s commands? Ouch! Do our hearts flinch spiritually as instinctively as our eyes do physically? As I look at the Christian faith today I sadly have to say NO! I think our flinching mechanism has been weakened in our faith. It takes greater and greater sin & darkness to make us blink.
So how do we get back? Well, how are we to guard God’s instructions if we don’t know what they are? And how can we flinch when they are threatened if we’re not aware they are being threatened? It all comes back to God’s Word.
We’ve GOT to be IN the Word! It’s where it ALL begins. Stop trying to FIX the flinching mechanism, and start FILLING your heart with the Word of God. THEN you’ll naturally start to flinch when God’s commands are threatened in your heart.
