THEY Need Your Seat

31 08 2010

Yes, that’s right.  It is time once again to ask people to SWITCH SERVICES!  I don’t usually post on the blog our attendance #’s for our Sunday worship experiences, but in this case, if you are an Elementer you need to understand what we are facing. PLEASE Element Church, pass the word and do what you can to help us continue to reach more people for Jesus by considering coming to first service.  Your seat, could literally be someone elses chance to have their life changed for ETERNITY.  Check it out!

This past Sunday we had 913 people in church.  First off, THAT IS STINKIN’ CRAZY and PRAISE GOD!  Second, we are running out of room…EXCEPT in first service.  In our worship center Sunday, we had 174 people first service, 256 second service and 249 third service.  We have some more chairs we can put out but we are bumping the 80% full mark (the standard “too full” benchmark for churches) nearly every week.  We will never fill every chair, human nature and comfort-ability factors limit that, and the front row just never fills up.  Then when you throw in our kids space issue it gets even worse.  We had 219 kids on Sunday.  53, 76 and 90 in our three worship experiences.  The nursery area alone second service is starting to overflow.  First of all, we are starting a short term, physical solution to our e:kidz space issues as we a staff as we speak, but second, it is going to be a comfort issue for a lot of new people coming to our church if we DON’T solve this problem short term, right now.  (Part of our September 19th and 26th services here at Element will be unveiling the LONG TERM solution to our space issues.  Don’t miss it!)

Bill Hybels says “Empty seats at optimal inviting hours = growth every time!”  Our optimal inviting hour is 10 am.  It is by far, and most regularly, the highest attended worship experience, AND I GET THAT!  10 AM would be the service I would want to attend if I weren’t the pastor.  However, if you are a Christian and you call Element home I want to challenge you to view it a different way.  If I told you today “This coming Sunday, there is a family who won’t hear about Jesus unless you come to first service.” You’d most likely come to first service without even batting an eye.  But what if I said “There is POTENTIALLY a family, EVERY WEEK, who won’t hear about Jesus unless you come to first service.”  What would your response be?

You might think I’m over dramatic or making too much of a big deal about it, but I take VERY seriously the ONE OPPORTUNITY we get each Sunday to potentially offer the Life of Christ to someone that can change their life for ETERNITY.  This coming Sunday is our ONE chance to reach that family for Jesus that MIGHT never attend again if we don’t have room.  For me, it’s not a big deal, it’s the ONLY deal!

I know not everyone CAN or will decide to move to first service, however, would you consider doing this VERY small thing in an effort to sacrifice your comfort for the sake of someone else’s eternity?

Looking for you in first service,

Jeff

Divided Vision

30 08 2010

I don’t think there is anything more powerful on earth than God’s Church, united together with a “Unified Purpose”.  One of my main prayers lately has been “Lord, protect us from division.  I pray for unity around YOU and around the VISION you’ve given us.”  I keep a prayer journal and Bible study journal each day.  I felt led, and I started praying that prayer specifically on July 28th of this year.  On August 2nd  my devotional reading brought me to the book of Ezra, and I don’t think the timing was just ironic.

Ezra was a Jewish priestly scribe who led a remnant of Jewish people back to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple after their captivity. I read this in Ezra 3:1 “…all the people assembled in Jerusalem with a unified purpose.”

Then just a few days ago as I was praying about “unity in purpose” I noticed something.  I was looking at the word “division” in my journal and realized that division has two parts to it:  “Di” (divided, two or double) “vision” (the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination or wisdom).   One of the reasons the people of Jerusalem were unified in purpose, was because there was a SINGULAR vision.  To REBUILD THE TEMPLE.  In fact, in Ezra 1:5 it says “Then God stirred the hearts of the priests, and Levites and the leaders of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin to go to Jerusalem to REBUILD the Temple of the Lord.”

In leadership, whether you are leading a church, a team, a company an organization, or just a small group of people, their must be ONE vision if there is to be a unified purpose.  There isn’t room in the church for TWO visions.  There isn’t room in ANY group for two visions.  If there is more than one vision, there will NEVER be unity in purpose.  That doesn’t mean people won’t oppose you or the vision (just read Ezra and Nehemiah to find that out).  It doesn’t mean people will ALWAYS agree.  It doesn’t mean someone won’t want a different vision.  And It doesn’t mean that you won’t make mistakes trying to implement the vision.  What it DOES mean, is there will be NO question WHERE you have been called to go and WHAT you have been called to do.

I then realized that being unified in purpose has as much to do with the ONE casting the vision, as it does the many who you want to follow it. So I added to my prayer list.  “Lord, may YOU give me YOUR vision for my family, my life and your church.”  When there is ONE vision it sure helps foster the potential of a unified purpose.

Seeking vision,

Jeff

Sunday Ruminations (8-29-10)

29 08 2010

Wicked sweet day at Element today.  Love seeing God move in peoples lives.  Here are my Ruminations on the day.

—  I believe the final count today was 8 people acknowledging Christ as Savior of their life.  LOVE it.  If only for the one!

—  I talked with a gal after church today who got saved last Sunday.  She was moved to tears and wanted me to know how much God has changed her life through Element.  She has a rough past but said that she has NEVER had a home like she’s found at Element.  Element Church, you guys ROCK!

—  Talked to another gentlemen following service who said “I’ve been in church my whole life…I have NEVER been moved by God like I have been here at Element.”  Today was his second week.

—  I also talked to a teacher from Rossman Elementary School.  She said “I hope you guys know the impact you had on SO MANY families.  I’ve talked to several people who commented how it has been such a relief not to have the burden of buying school supplies this year.”

—  Comments like that make “To have such an impact that if our church were gone the community would miss us” become a reality.  Way to go Element.

—  The Element backpack team did SUCH an incredible job.  Thanks to all who served on that team.  You guys are amazing.  You did a SUPER job.

—  We had 217 kids today.  Just kids.  UNREAL!  That is stinkin’ unbelievable!  If you’re a parent, you should buy your kids Sunday School teacher a Starbucks gift card or something.  Amazing what those e:kidz workers do for our children.  Way to go Derek and ALL the e:kidz volunteer staff.

—  Band stinkin’ rocked today.  The energy in 3rd service was ELECTRIC!

—  Again, LOVE singing Element original songs.  Breaking Free, which Adam wrote, was off the chain today.  So good.  I made sure I was in every service for that song.  Love it.

— Had a volunteer appreciation BBQ and vision casting today.  Not sure how many were there, but it was a GREAT group of Element volunteers.  LOVED sharing some vision to them of what’s next for Element Church.  Element has the BEST volunteers in the world.  LOVE you guys!  You make Element happen and EVERYTHING you do helps connect people with life.

—  Concluded our series “Confessions Of A Pastor” today.  Have had a bunch of fun with this series and have LOVED seeing what God has done in peoples lives.  30 salvations in 4 Sundays this month.  So cool!  Here are some excerpts on the day:

  • Confession #4: I’m not gifted to be your pastor.  We talked about spiritual gifts.  How God has given us strengths and weaknesses but how we each fit together perfectly in the body of Christ.
  • Preached from Ephesians 4:1-16 and asked the question “How do I respond to my weaknesses?”
  • At times I feel completely inadequate to be your pastor.  But that’s just it.  I AM completely inadequate, but Christ is FULLY capable and adequate to complete the task within me.
  • When I focus on my weaknesses I’m actually limiting what God wants to do with my strengths.
  • Sometimes God will put us where we feel least gifted so that He receives all the credit when we succeed.  Sometimes God will call us to do things we think we cannot do to prove to us that He can do whatever He wants through us.
  • The most important calling in your life is your calling to Christ!
  • If you’re a Christian and you don’t feel called to serve God’s church you may not understand Christianity.  Serving isn’t about our convenience or our circumstance, it’s about our calling and we have ALL been called to serve HIS church because He first served US.
  • Far too many Christians want to consume what the church has to offer but not contribute anything to it.
  • Serving God’s church is a privilege not a right.  It’s an opportunity not an obligation.
  • If you are a Christian you are FAR too gifted NOT to be building up the body of Christ.  If you’re a Christian you are FAR to gifted to be sitting on the sideline and not IN the game.
  • When Christ has changed your life you WANT to be a part of changing someone elses.
  • I believe you will never be completely fulfilled until you are fully engaged in the ministry of God’s local church.
  • If God can use me to START a church He can use you to SERVE in one.  It’s time to get in the game.

—  Had SIXTY people sign up today to volunteer.  LOVE seeing that happen.

—  A family has been approved for the R3 house.  A single mom with 2 children.  She will move in on September 1st.  We will have the basement apartment done in about 3 weeks and move another family in as soon as possible.  SO excited about helping people find a home. LITERALLY.

— I can’t share the details of this family, but we are REALLY helping a family in need!  So proud of our R3 team.  You guys are amazing.

—  I am SO excited for our next series called IMPACT.  Don’t forget, we will be unveiling a new initiative and some vision on September 19th and 26th.  If you’re an Elementer you do NOT want to miss it.  What we’ll be sharing will, I believe, change Element Church and its ministry FOREVER.  It is a game changer for us and we want YOU to be a part of.  Check out the video below.

— Also, on October 3rd we are celebrating our 3 year anniversary with ONE service at the Cheyenne Civic Center at 11 AM for all ages.  It is going to be a worship experience like nothing we’ve ever had.  We’re gonna blow the ROOF off that place with praise.  Can’t wait.

—  That’s it!  Time to chill with the fam.  Element Church, I love you guys!

A Leaders Responsibility Pt. 4

26 08 2010

You can read yesterday’s post HERE with a link to the others.

Deuteronomy 17:18-20 says 18 “When he sits on the throne as king, he must copy for himself this body of instruction on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests. 19 He must always keep that copy with him and read it daily as long as he lives. That way he will learn to fear the Lord his God by obeying all the terms of these instructions and decrees. 20 This regular reading will prevent him from becoming proud and acting as if he is above his fellow citizens. It will also prevent him from turning away from these commands in the smallest way.  And it will ensure that he and his descendants will reign for many generations in Israel.

The third reason a leader needs to take responsibility to daily study God’s Word is:  It keeps the future in focus

God here is talking about future descendants reigning on the throne for generations.  While “reigning” doesn’t apply to spiritual leadership today, the principle remains the same.  I think sometimes in leadership, we don’t keep the future in focus.  We fail to remember…to see that the decisions I make today, affects my church, my family, my organization, my ministry for YEARS to come.  Generations if you will!

I don’t want Element Church to succeed today if it doesn’t succeed after I’m gone!  I hope I am leading in a way that sets up Element Church to continue helping people experience LIFE to its fullest and IMPACT our community LONG after I am gone.  My leadership doesn’t just affect today, 5 years or 10 years from now.  That daily study of God’s Word helps keep the future in focus!  You see, vision is NOT just about seeing what God can accomplish through us NOW, but seeing what God can accomplish AFTER we’re gone!

In 2 Kings 20:16-19 this is said about King Hezekiah.  16 Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Listen to this message from the Lord: 17 The time is coming when everything in your palace—all the treasures stored up by your ancestors until now—will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the Lord. 18 Some of your very own sons will be taken away into exile. They will become eunuchs who will serve in the palace of Babylon’s king.” 19 Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “This message you have given me from the Lord is good.” For the king was thinking, “At least there will be peace and security during my lifetime.”

King Hezekiah wasn’t concerned with the future, because everything was good in HIS lifetime.  Man, That is a HUGE warning for me.  My leading doesn’t just affect today, or even MY lifetime.  If the Lord chooses not to return before I’m gone, my leadership extends to GENERATIONS.  It affects my family, our church, and our community.  YOURS does too!  I don’t ever want to have the attitude of “At least there will be peace and security in my lifetime.”  I hope the decisions I make and the things I do in leadership are CONSTANTLY run through the filter of Scripture so that I keep the FUTURE in focus.

Looking ahead,

Jeff

A Leader’s Responsibility Pt. 3

25 08 2010

You can read yesterday’s post on this subject HERE.

The second reason a leader needs to take responsibility to study God’s Word is:  It will prevent him from becoming proud

If there is ANYTHING that can bring down a leader faster than pride, I don’t know what it is.  In fact Proverbs 16:18 says Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness (arrogance) before a fall. Here, through Moses, the Lord says that the regular reading of God’s Word prevents a leader from becoming proud and acting as if he is above his fellow citizens.

I tell you what, you don’t have to read much of Scripture to be humbled.  Read the creation story.  I’m not really that impressive compared to a God who SPOKE the world into existence.  There was no such thing as light, God says “Let there BE light” and light appears.  Not that He created the Sun, that is another miracle in and of itself…but God MADE…CREATED…came up with LIGHT!  He created light on the 1st day and the Sun on the 4th.

Read Job 38-41 for a good dose of humility.  Here are some excerpts of what God says: “Are you as strong as God?”  “Who has given me anything that I need to pay back?  Everything under heaven is mine.”  “Have you ever commanded the morning to appear and caused the dawn to rise in the east?”  “Can you shout to the clouds and make it rain?”  I love this one “Do you know when wild goats give birth?”

Read Isaiah 53:6 All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the LORD laid on him the sins of us all. (Yes, that includes you pastor)

Read Romans 5:8  But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.

That only BEGINS to make the point that God’s Word, when read daily, can keep us from becoming proud.  Christian leader…pastor…the only person that gave you the position you are in is GOD and He is fully capable of taking it away.  I have seen FAR too many pastors and leaders fall by the wayside…succumb to sexual immorality…financial indiscretions or public humiliations because they “became proud and acted as if they were above their fellow citizens”.  It’s a very real danger for ME and it’s a very real danger for YOU.  I don’t know if a neglect of God’s Word was partly to blame, but I know this:  God’s Word, when studied daily, WILL help keep you humble.

Trying to stay humble,

Jeff

LCCC Freshman Move In Day

24 08 2010

I am SO PROUD of what our teens and college students do here at Element Church.  Just recently, theSHIFT had a GREAT outreach opportunity.  I asked Bruce Pagano, the director of theSHIFT here at Element, to do a guest blog highlighting the event and how it went.  Check it out below.
I just wanted to take a moment to share what God has been doing at theSHIFT and some of our plans for this upcoming school year. By far one of the most exciting events so far in 2010 (for me anyway) happened this past Saturday, August 21. theSHIFT had the opportunity to serve the 210 incoming Laramie County Community College (LCCC) Freshmen as they moved into the dormitory.

In preparing for Move-In Day, fourteen SHIFTers got together on Thursday evening and put together “Freshman Survival Kits.” The kits, contained a mesh laundry bag, had stuff like a copy of Mark Batterson’s book, In a Pit With a Lion on a Snowy Day, a Christian CD, pencils, highlighters, candy, granola bars, stress relief tips and a couple other items. We were able to partner with the Director of Campus Crusade for Christ at Colorado State University, Christian Rainbolt, who provided the CDs, some of the books and the mesh bags. It was stinking awesome to have him come up and be part of it.

Then the big day arrived. On Saturday morning, at about 7:15am a few of us met at LCCC and prayed over the dormitory grounds. By 9am we had about seventeen SHIFTers there pumped to serve our college community. It started off a little slow, but within the hour there wasn’t a SHIFTer that wasn’t busy. We spent the day unloading cars, moving stuff into dorm rooms, handing out Survival Kits, connecting with the students and their parents and just being there for them. As I watched the SHIFTers work, I’m not ashamed to say; twice I was moved to tears. They WERE the hands and feet of Jesus (I’m certain of it because both of mine hurt by the end of the day). They were there serving and loving people without exception or expectation; and you could see it in every interaction that occurred.

Countless times I heard parents and students say how amazing it was that we cared enough to be there to help, what a blessing it was, or how much Element is impacting this community. I had one mother tell me it made her “weepy” that we would give our time to help. The Dean of Students walked up to a group of SHIFTers during lunch and thanked them over and over saying that us being there was so important to the incoming students. The kitchen staff made an awesome spaghetti lunch based on the number of students that were around last year at lunch time. We had moved so many students in the morning that by lunch time, there were very few around to eat the spaghetti. (I kind of feel bad about that one, although we ate well). As we wrapped up for the day, at about 3:30pm, we had welcomed and moved about 180 of the incoming students. The Hall Director, Jason, said that it went so much smoother than last year and was a lot more efficient.

All that to say this…we went there with one mission: to serve and love LCCC. Mission accomplished! I am so proud and thankful to have the honor of leading this group of college and 20somethings. They radiate the love of Christ and its contagious!

There is a bunch more to come this school year, stuff like movie nights, dinners, a concert (The Ineloquent on September 11th) and other opportunities to serve, so stay connected to FB, twitter and the website.

So Stoked,

Bruce

A Leaders Responsibility Pt. 2

24 08 2010

You can read Part 1 HERE.  As I said, I’m amazed at the simplicity of leadership when looked at it through the lens of Scripture.  There are some GREAT books on leadership out there and I highly recommend ANY leader taking time to learn from other successful leaders…HOWEVER, there isn’t a better leadership book than the Bible.  And there isn’t a better leadership voice than the Holy Spirit.  Leadership is as simple as listening to the Holy Spirit and doing what He says.  One of the GREATEST ways to hear the Holy Spirit is through reading Scripture.

The first reason a leader needs to take responsibility to study God’s Word is:  He will learn to FEAR the Lord and OBEY His commands.

I would say that this reason is the TOP reason a leader needs to be in God’s Word.  I pound this into our team constantly, it has become the foundation on which I stand as a leader.  “Obedience IS success”  I think sometimes as leaders, especially as Christian leaders and pastors, we view obedience as a leveraging tool against God.  That somehow, if I obey God, He will bless my leadership or ministry and make me successful.  We view success as how many attend church.  How much money comes in.  How great a building we have.  When in reality, ALL those “successes” mean NOTHING if I don’t learn to OBEY Christ! Obedience doesn’t BRING success it IS success.

In 1 Kings 2:2-3 David is passing the leadership baton of King to his son Solomon.  He says “Take courage and be a man.  Observe the requirements of the Lord your God, and follow all his ways.  Keep the decrees, commands, regulations, and laws written in the Law of Moses so that you will be successful in all you do and wherever you go.”

I have to wonder, that while YES Solomon experienced great “worldly” success, if David wasn’t saying “Solomon, obedience IS your success”?  Was David emphasizing and reminding Solomon that with ALL the accolades leadership can give…all the fulfillment we might experience from it..all the STUFF we might gain, that NONE of it matters unless we follow Christ?  NONE! ZIP! NODDA! ZERO!

Leader, stop pursuing SUCCESS and start pursuing CHRIST and you’ll have found your success.  Get into the WORD daily so you will learn to fear the Lord and obey His commands.  Obedience IS your success.  It’s YOUR responsibility.  It’s only in God’s Word that we are able to find God’s will.

In the Word,

Jeff

A Leaders Responsibility Pt. 1

23 08 2010

I’m amazed at the simplicity of leadership when looked at it through the lens of Scripture.  There are some GREAT books on leadership out there and I highly recommend ANY leader taking time to learn from other successful leaders…HOWEVER, there isn’t a better leadership book than the Bible.  And there isn’t a better leadership voice than the Holy Spirit.  As Perry Noble says “Leadership is as simple as hearing God’s voice and doing what He says.”  With that said, there is a passage of Scripture that I think is KEY to a leaders responsibility:

Now, I understand this was written to the King, and is referring specifically to this book, Deuteronomy, or quite possibly to the whole Torah (Genesis – Deuteronomy).  However, I don’t think I’d be straying too far to say that the principle remains the same.  It is the leaders responsibility to develop a DAILY study and reading of God’s Word (Genesis – Revelation) as an integral part of their growing relationship with Jesus! I say Genesis – Revelation because the WHOLE of Scripture determines the WHOLE of me.  It’s too easy to go back to passages or books that I LIKE and that make me feel good.  But I don’t need to feel good, I need ALL of God’s Word to permeate ALL of me, and that can only happen from Genesis – Revelation (in some form reading all of Scripture).

This reading and study of God’s Word needs to go BEYOND preparing for a sermon, studying for small group, 0r looking for verses that you can pull out of context to prove your position on a non essential doctrine that really doesn’t effect anyone’s eternity.  This reading needs to sink in to WHO you are and HOW you live because WHO you are and HOW you live will determine WHAT kind of leader you will be.  I find it interesting that of ALL the guidelines for a King (leader) in this passage, the most is said about the leaders involvement in God’s Word.  There are 3 reasons why a leaders responsibility is to study God’s Word daily.  We’ll look at those the rest of this week.

In His Word,

Jeff

Sunday Ruminations (8-22-10)

22 08 2010

I am headed up to Wheatland, WY for a meeting in just a few minutes so this is going to be very brief.  But I wanted to share what went down today.  Here are my short ruminations.

—  EIGHT people stood to acknowledge Jesus as Savior today.  AWESOME!  One person in first, one in second and six in third service.  LOVE it!  If only for the ONE!

—  Also had a FULL altar of people every service just opening themselves up to experience the love of Christ.  I can’t prove myself to Jesus, but you better believe He proved Himself to me…and the only appropriate response is SURRENDER! Saw some people do that today.

—  LOVED seeing people experience the love of Christ today.

—  Adam’s song “The One Who Loves Me” is so stinkin’ perfect.  “Jesus, you are the one who loves me so come wrap your loving arms around me.  Carry me to that place where we might embrace and I become brand new.”  So good.

— Speaking of Adam’s songs.  A little birdie told me that Adam’s worship cd has returned back from mastering in the studio.  That means the only step left is duplication. (a little birdie also told me I get a PRE-RELEASE copy TOMORROW!)

— Right now we are planning a cd release party on Wednesday, September 29th.  You won’t want to miss it.  It will be a worship celebration and release of the new album.  Come out that night to support Adam’s new project.

— Continued Confessions Of A Pastor today:

  • Confessions #3:  I live my life feeling like I’m not good enough
  • Spoke on the life of Peter today looking at several different passages.  Asked the question “What happens when I try to prove myself?”
  • I correct instead of submit.  I speak instead of listen.  I commit instead of admit.  I need to receive instead of relieve
  • Message should be up online Tuesday. Encourage you to check it out.  www.elementweb.net
  • Played a video called “Jesus Wants The Rose” at the end of the message.  AMAZINGLY powerful video.  Perfect for a closing illustration.
  • This message was VERY close to my heart.  I struggle a lot with “I’m not good enough”
  • The band covered a Seventh Day Slumber song called “My Struggle”  You can listen to it HERE.  Love that song.  Perfect for me and this message.

— Here is a pic of 400 backpacks FILLED with supplies for all the students at Rossman Elementary here in Cheyenne.

— Tuesday we are taking them ALL out to the school for open house.

—  Be praying that the LIFE of Jesus goes with these backpacks.  Just praying they make an impact to the families.  Thanks Element for stepping up and filling this need.

— Alright, want to share more but my time is up.  Gotta hit the road to Wheatland.

— Thanks Element for letting me lead you.  You guys are AWESOME!

Till the end,

Jeff
