Open: How God Sees Your Worship

27 04 2010

“I LOVE worship!” “I didn’t care for the worship at THAT church.” “I wish we’d do MORE worship.” These are comments we often make about OUR desire for worship. But is worship really about us…even at all? God says that sometimes our worship is nothing but “noisy hymns” and “ego music”. So what does God see in our worship? Isn’t His opinion really what matters most? God DOES desire for us to be people of true worship, but the only way that we become OPEN to it, is when we do it HIS way. Come to OPEN starting May 2nd at Element Church and find out how to OPEN your heart to HIS.  You can use this video as an invite for your friends.

Element Church is located at 600 E. Carlson St. in Cheyenne, WY.

Our worship experiences are every Sunday at 8:30 // 10 // & 11:30AM

Feed Me

22 04 2010

GREAT GREAT blog by Pastor Kody this week.  Wow.  Talk about fitting into the sermon from Sunday.  I said something in my sermon that Kody illustrates in his blog.  I said:

“I’m not going to feed you at Element Church.  Oh, I’ll bring food to the table, and my prayer is it’s GOOD food.  But you are responsible to lift the fork to your mouth.  To go in for seconds, thirds, fourths, fifths and sixths throughout the week.  You’re responsible to make sure that what goes IN, is properly being lived THROUGH you!”

Here is Pastor Kody’s Blog:

I had an incident happen last night at the dinner table that reminded me of Pastor Jeff’s sermon from Sunday (if you have not seen it click HERE).

Last night the kids sat down at the table waiting for dinner, but they had neglected to do their part and set the table. So, the table was completely empty except for the meal that Julie had brought out. One of the kids finally asked Julie, “aren’t you going to feed us?” Julie’s answer was great: ” You are mature enough to feed yourself and to prepare the table for dinner. If you neglect to prepare the table for dinner, you will not be fed. So, get off your butt and set the table so you can eat”

Wow, and she was not even in church on Sunday to hear the message (You can blame Pastor Derek for making her work e:kidz and the Denver museum for having a free admission day).

How often do we come to church expecting to be fed by the pastor, but we have neglected to set the table throughout the week? Pastor Jeff will bring the food to the table, but we must be ready to eat.

How do you set the table for Sunday and prepare for the meal? I am glad you asked. Here are some steps to take so that you can be ready to eat:

• Pray everyday and ask God for His guidance and direction in your life.
• Have a daily devotional time that is spent studying and meditating on God’s Word.
• Make quiet time a priority in your life and use this time to listen to God.
• Meet together with other believers throughout the week and discuss what God is doing in your life.
• Come to church ready to worship the Lord of the universe.
• Bring your Bible and take notes so you can do further in-depth study during the week.
• Participate in the full worship experience on Sunday. Do not wait in the lobby until the music is done, or leave before offering is taken.

I believe that taking these steps will prepare you for the meal on Sunday. So, in the words of one of the great thinkers, wife and mom or our generation: “Get off your butt and set the table so you can eat.”

When It’s Convenient

21 04 2010

In Acts 24, the Apostle Paul finds himself in the custody and protection of Governor Felix.  Paul was there because the Jews and religious leaders in Jerusalem wanted him killed for his belief and preaching about Jesus as the Messiah.  While in the custody of Felix, whose wife was Jewish, Paul had opportunities to speak to them about faith in Jesus, AND the Bible said they listened.  But, in Acts 24:25 this verse ALWAYS challenges me.  I blogged about it last year.  Here are my thoughts:

How much of our spiritual lives are based on convenience? Acts 24:25 says:   25 As he reasoned with them about righteousness and self-control and the coming day of judgment, Felix became frightened. “Go away for now,” he replied. “When it is more convenient, I’ll call for you again.”

How many of us treat God like that?  His word?  A sermon?   A trusted Christian friend?  “When it’s more convenient I’ll call for you.”

“When I can afford to tithe…I will.”

“When I have more time to do devotions…I will.”

“One more week…then I’ll quit.”

“One more time…then I won’t look again.”

“When it’s more convenient for me…I’ll call.”  Know what I’ve found?  It is NEVER convenient to do what God asks me to do, but it’s ALWAYS best!  OH, and we ALWAYS think it’s convenient for God to come through for us when we find ourselves in DESPERATE need.  But aren’t we always in desperate need of Him?

Following Christ,

Jeff

“These” Kinds Of People

20 04 2010

Last week, Pastor Kody wrote a blog that I thought I’d share here.  I mentioned it in my sermon on Sunday.  LOVE the connection to Element.  You can read it below.

The other day I was reading in Matthew where Jesus called Matthew to be one of his disciples and goes over to his house to eat with other tax collectors and disreputable sinners. Then in Matthew 9:11 the Pharisees saw this and asked the disciples why Jesus was associating with “these” types of people. Jesus goes on to say in Matthew 9:12-13 that He has come not for the already righteous but for those who know they are sinners.

Element, I challenge us to continue to be the church that reaches out to the known sinners and to never become a church that caters to the already righteous. I am excited that in the span of three weeks I will have been involved with three different court hearings of Element attendees who have turned their lives around and found hope, love, acceptance and LIFE through Element Church and Jesus Christ.

When the pastors of the church attend more court hearing than board meetings (with the already righteous) you know we are reaching those who need to be reached.

Keep up the good work church!

I Want To Pray Like Jesus

19 04 2010

I was challenged this morning, reading through John, to pray like Jesus.  Yes, I know that there are multiple instances of Jesus praying which we could follow His example on.  Also, we have the Lords Prayer, which was Jesus’ response to the Disciples request of “Lord, teach us how to pray”.  I’m not saying that we should ignore the other times of Christ praying, HOWEVER, I do think there is an overarching principle we can glean from what I was challenged with today.

John 12:27-28 Jesus says:  “Now my soul is deeply troubled.  Should I pray, ‘Father, save me from this hour?’ But this is the very reason I came! Father, bring glory to your name.

This is purely conjecture here, but It sure seems like Jesus is saying “NO, I won’t pray THAT.  But I will pray ‘Father, bring glory to your name.’”

I want to pray like Jesus.  I so often pray “Father, save ME from this.”  “Lord, protect ME from this.”  “God, provide for ME in this.”  And, there is nothing intrinsically wrong with those prayers, but I want the overall theme of my prayers to be “Father, bring glory to your name.”  THAT, is the ultimate goal.  THAT needs to be my aim.  THAT is what it’s all about.  WHATEVER I go through.  WHATEVER I face.  WHATEVER happens to ME, it’s not really about me is it?  But I sure seem to make my prayers about me!

I want to pray like Jesus.  Father, bring glory to YOUR Name!

Sunday Rumination (4-18-10)

18 04 2010

This past Monday I felt the Lord prompting me to take a one week break from Twitter and Facebook.  I love both those social media tools, use them a lot, and will start using them again tomorrow, but just felt like I should take a break.  The only thing I Twittered were links to my blogs through the week.  Along those same lines, I’m going to not post Sunday Ruminations for today.  We have The Tour today and are expecting around 70-80 newcomers to come hear about Element Church.  I know I’ll get home late this afternoon, be exhausted and just want to chill.  SO, as if anyone cares (lol), I’ll start up my regular blog, Twitter and Facebook routine tomorrow.  YES, I said routine for I AM a man of one.  Love you Element Church.  Have an AWESOME day.

Till the end,

Jeff

What Was The Pharisees Problem? (Part 4)

15 04 2010

HERE is a link to the last post with links to the first two as well.  You can also just scroll down the blog home page to read all four.  Here are my final thoughts on the Pharisees (while I know there could be TONS more), and they come from the  final stages of Jesus’ life.  Again, even at the trial of Jesus, their TRUE motives are revealed, and their TRUE problem is exposed.

In Mark 15 Jesus is arrested and taken before Pilate for a trial.  The crowds had gathered, and the leading Priests and Pharisees were making their case.

Mark 15:10 it says: For he (Pilate) realized by now that the leading Priests had arrested Jesus out of envy.

What were they envious of?  ATTENTION!  From who?  The CROWDS!  Matthew 23:5 Jesus says about the Pharisees that “Everything they do is for show”.  If EVERYTHING they do is for show, and people aren’t paying THEM any attention, they were going to do whatever it took to bring the “show” back to THEM.

We can react the same way in our faith AND in our leadership.  How do we respond to another churches success?  How do I react when someone ELSE gets recognized?  What is my reply when someone tells me how GREAT someone else is, or that person gets MORE attention?  When we have the problem of the Pharisees, we’ll begin to look for ways to cut them down, trip them up, beat them down or drag them away, all in an attempt to bring the SHOW back to me.  It’s a DANGEROUS trap and a VERY real one.

Where does my fear come from?  Where is my motivation?  What is my inspiration?  ANYTIME it starts coming from the CROWD…there’s a problem.

Checking myself,

Jeff

What Was The Pharisees Problem? (Part 3)

15 04 2010

You can read the first two thoughts on this subject HERE and HERE.  Here is my third thought on the Pharisees.

Because their fear, motivation and inspiration came from the crowd (Matthew 22:46), they lived from MAN MADE traditions trying to achieve happiness, while they ignored GOD GIVEN ideas that would have led to their holiness.

In Mark 7:5 the Pharisees ask Jesus “Why don’t your disciples follow OUR age-old TRADITION?” Notice WHOSE it was and WHAT it was.  It was a tradition, NOT a command.  It was from man NOT from God.  Jesus calls them out on it and responds in the following verses.

Mark 7:6-8 says:  Jesus replied, “You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote,  ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’ For you ignore God’s law and substitute your own tradition.”

I truly believe that anytime WE or the CROWD becomes more important than GOD, we will begin to substitute our own traditions while ignoring God’s commands.  The Pharisees weren’t after TRUE holiness, they were after a FORM of holiness that would impress those around them.  They were chasing happiness and the expense of holiness.  Happiness is ALWAYS more comfortable, but it is only HOLINESS that will satisfy our longings.  And HOLINESS can only be found in God’s ways not mans ideas.

Where have I made traditions more important than God’s commands?  Where am I pursuing happiness at the expense of holiness?

Being careful,

Jeff

What Was The Pharisees Problem? (Part 2)

13 04 2010

Yesterday I started this thought HERE.  I’d like to talk about it a little further today.  The Pharisees were “afraid of the crowds” (Matthew 21:46), which I think was the root of many of their problems.  Their fear, their motivation, their inspiration was in the wrong place and it lead to the wrong things.

When I read that verse in Matthew 21, I was immediately reminded of Matthew 23 (which I’m preaching from this coming Sunday).

Matthew 23:5-7 says “Everything they do is for show.  On their arms they wear extra wide prayer boxes with Scripture verses inside, and they wear robes with extra long tassels.  And they love to sit at the head table at banquets and in the seats of honor in the synagogues.  They love to receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi.’”

Why was everything they did for show?  BECAUSE their fear was based in the crowd.  The HAD to impress the people.  The HAD to be noticed by the people.  They HAD to receive honor, respect and blessing from the people.  They were pursuing life, prosperity and honor but notice the contrast of their attitude to what Proverbs 21:21 says:  He who pursue righteousness and love will find life, prosperity and honor.

They had it backwards.  Because they were pursuing honor they ACTED righteous.  Because they were chasing prosperity they PUT ON a show.  Because they desperately wanted to be alive they LIVED for the people.  THAT was the Pharisees problem.  I’m challenged to pursue, IN CHRIST, righteousness and love. And may I find my life, prosperity and honor in HIM alone.

Pursuing,

Jeff
