Significant vs. Extraordinary

17 11 2009

I’ve been mulling over this idea of significance for the last couple of weeks.  You can read my post on significance vs. excellence HERE.  Significance is one of our core values at Element Church and I truly believe it is a biblical concept, that we are created to be significant.  I believe Ephesians 2:10 which says For we are God’s masterpiece.  He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. We often quote the two verses previous on being “saved by his grace”, but we leave out this great verse following, which gives us one reason WHY he saved us.  “Creating us anew…SO we can do the good things HE planned…”.  I believe we are each uniquely designed for a GOD SIZED purpose.

HOWEVER, I believe we have falsely taught AND falsely believed that in order to be significant…if it is GOD SIZED, we have to be or do something extraordinary.  That is not the case.  I can do something extraordinary while having little significance.  Extraordinary means “Very unusual or remarkable”.  Significance means “The quality of being worthy of attention; important”

I’ve done some very unusual things in my life.  People are constantly doing unusual or remarkable things in the hopes that they will receive attention, but it doesn’t make them or their deed WORTHY of attention OR important.  I can do a seemingly ordinary thing, that, if God has designed me for it or asked me to do it, all the sudden it’s SIGNIFICANT.  Significance does not find it’s merit in WHO gives it attention, but IF it’s worthy of attention.  If it is important.  If it is “planned” from God.  Many people and things are worthy of attention, but never receive it.

Oswald Chambers said “It is inbred in us that we have to do exceptional things for God; but we have not.  We have to be exceptional at ordinary things.”

What is significant?  Doing the good things that GOD prepared for us to do long ago!  Whether ANYONE gives it attention, it is significant.

Seeking significance,

Jeff
