Sunday Ruminations (10-18-09)
18 10 2009Awesome day at church today. Weather is unbelievable outside and I have to say it was unbelievable inside the church as well. Here are my ruminations on the day.
— 23 people stood today to declare their allegicance to Jesus and receive Him as Savior. AMAZING! That NEVER gets old.
— If only for the one (or 23)!
— I did something today I’ve never done before. I had 4 points in my sermon. After point #1 I gave an opportunity for people to receive Christ. The final 3 points dealt with what happens AFTER I’m saved, so I felt we needed to give that opportunity right in the middle of the sermon. Worked pretty good. I had people raise their hand after we prayed, I then had them stand at the end of the service if they had prayed.
— So cool to see people standing each service, acknowledging Christ as their Savior. Have lots of people to follow up with now.
— The Holy Spirit was SO HEAVY today throughout the worship service.
— I got a blog sitting in the coffer about Presence vs. People! It’s very easy in church leadership to trust in the #’s of people rather than the presence of God. #’s are easier to trust cause you can see them. You can’t always see God’s presence, but let me speak from experience, you can FEEL when it’s not there or not evident. I’ll take presence over people any day! (That’s tougher to say when the #’s are down. Just being honest)
— We had a GREAT turnout today. The 70 degrees today compared to snow and ice last week definitely showed its impact. Completely different from last week.
— 28 FTG’s (First Time Guests) today! That is a TON. We average 8 – 10. 28 cards were actually filled out. Amazing.
— We STILL need people to move from 2nd to 1st or 3rd service. I think we are going to have to announce this on Sunday and challenge some Elementers to make the shift. 2nd service is getting full and we definitely have room in 1st or 3rd service.
— Said goodbye to a GREAT Element couple today. Keenan and Katrina were the first couple to show up on the scene here in Cheyenne from Gillette as a part of our launch team. They served as volunteer staff in the beginning and have continued to be a KEY part of our church. Due to job situations they are moving back to Gillette this week. Gonna miss them.
— MAN did the band absolutely nail it today. Spot on! Our time of worship in EVERY service was amazing. Continue to be so pleased and impressed with the caliber of people God lets us use each week to lead us in worship.
— Continued our I Love The 80′s series today and talked about our core value of Change. Here are some excerpts.
— Spoke from Colossians 3:1-17. AMAZING and powerful passage of Scripture. Such a clear picture of salvation and what is to follow after receiving Christ.
— If you don’t believe that a major change takes place when you receive salvation, maybe you have yet to be changed. (I once was dead, now I’m alive)
— Saying to Christ “He’s kinda my life” is like me saying of Sabrina “She’s kinda my wife”. How is that gonna work out. (I’m either dead or alive there is no kinda)
— Telling God “I need to change first” (before coming to know Him), is like a dead man telling the paramedic before CPR “Let me try to breathe first”. IT CAN’T HAPPEN!
— When you come to know Jesus and your heart is made alive, your life and lifestyle need to start changing. (Can’t argue with Colossians 3:5-9)
— I think too many people use “legalism” as their excuse not to strip off that which is of the world, weighs them down, and keeps them from being ALL that Christ wants them to be.
— It doesn’t have to be Abercrombie, Hollister, Gucci or Armani to find pride in our labels. The church does just fine being puffed up in our mercy, humility, kindness, and patience. We show off our spiritual clothes just as much as our physical ones.
— If you’re getting better at pointing out how bad everyone else is, you may actually be moving further away from God because the closer you get to Him the more you realize you NEED Him.
— When I start focusing on what clothes I have on (spiritual) and what everyone else doesn’t have, I become like a spoiled little rich kid thinking “Man, I’m glad I don’t have their dad.” The reality is though, you have the same dad, you just don’t know Him anymore.
— We are not made to have some of Jesus and He some of us. We’re made to have ALL of Jesus and He ALL of us. We’re designed to be FILLED!
— I’m really enjoying our theme of I Love The 80′s. It’s complimented very well our Core Values and added some fun illustration moments in Church. Oh yeah, we’re not supposed to have fun in church.
— Can’t think of anything else right now. We have The Tour newcomers dinner tonight at 5:30. Love connecting with new people in the church.
— Gonna chill for a bit watching some football and head back to the church.
— I LOVE leading the best people in the world. You guys ROCK!
Following Christ,
Jeff

Pastor Kody’s Moving…
16 10 2009Two blocks away from me! Since June, Pastor Kody and his family have been living in a one bedroom apartment with the four kids while they searched for the right home here in Cheyenne. After a couple of let downs on potential homes, the Lord has provided them with a great home at 4105 Rangeview. Click HERE for a map. They are closing today and moving in at 4 PM. ANY HELP would be GREATLY appreciated. They have been storing there stuff from Oklahoma in a trailer since they arrived, living out of suitcases. Please come out and help if you can today. Thank you!
Following Christ,
Jeff

This Sunday
14 10 2009If you want to do some advanced reading for this Sunday’s message you can read Colossians 3:1-17. As last Sunday, this weeks passage is LOADED with stuff that we just aren’t going to get to touch. If you’re really wanting to be a teachers pet, read the book of Colossians. Get the whole picture of what Paul was addressing. Its only 4 chapters. That’s it. Just wanted to throw that opportunity out there.

What are you zealous for?
13 10 20092 Samuel 21:1 says this: “There was a famine during David’s reign that lasted for three years, so David asked the Lord about it. And the Lord said, ‘The famine has come because Saul and his family are guilty of murdering the Gibeonites.’”
Murder…that’s bad. (“Wow Jeff. So profound today!”) I know, I know, hold on for a second. As I read the next verse the Lord REALLY spoke to my heart about something. There was a subtle shift in Saul’s heart that didn’t seem BAD, but it was WRONG. That shift resulted in murder. It was a HUGE challenge to me and I shared it with the Lead Team and Leadership Council on Sunday @ our monthly meeting.
2 Samuel 21:2 then says this: “So the king summoned the Gibeonites. They were not part of Israel but were all that was left of the nation of the Amorites. The people of Israel had sworn not to kill them, but Saul, in his zeal for Israel and Judah, had tried to wipe them out.”
See that? Saul’s zeal was not BAD but it was WRONG! I mean, God himself was zealous for Israel and Judah. Here is the challenge though. Saul was NOT responsible to be zealous for Israel OR Judah. He was responsible to be zealous for GOD! If Sauls heart would have been FULLY DEVOTED…zealous toward God, the murder never would have happened. It was his zeal for the WRONG thing that led him to a BAD thing.
Making this personal. God is ZEALOUS for Element Church and its people, but I am to be zealous for GOD! God is ZEALOUS for your family, but you are to be zealous for GOD! God is ZEALOUS for you, you are to be zealous for GOD! It is the shift in our hearts toward being zealous for the WRONG things that lead us to the BAD things. If I’m not careful, zeal for myself, for my family or for my church can replace my zeal for God. Those things in and of themselves are not bad but they ARE wrong, and they ALWAYS lead to something bad.
So…what are you zealous for?
Zealous,
Jeff

Sunday Rumination (10-11-09)
11 10 2009The first Winter (Fall) storm of the year rolled through over the weekend. Left us blanketed with 6 – 8 inches of snow, major highways closed and FREEZING cold temperatures and slick roads this morning. It was SLIM PICKENS’ in church today but the Holy Spirit was very present. I’ll take the Spirit’s Presence over people anyday! Overall great day at Element. Here are my ruminations on the day.
— I LOVE snow but I hate it when it happens over a Sunday!
— On a positive note, as I was driving to the church today I realized “I am SO glad we don’t have to load and unload the church trailer everyweek” It was days like today that that were BRUTAL!
— The Spirit was very evident today. Loved our worship time together and taking communion as a church body is always great!
— Adam started doing something with the band, tech team and pastors on communion Sundays. Since they are always working during communion we gather together before first service and I administer communion to them. I really enjoyed sitting down with them this morning, praying over them and getting to take communion myself.
— I hope the symbolism and “remembrance” of communion NEVER gets old to us. Jesus established the reminder and it should ALWAYS be a powerful moment to think about what Christ did for us.
— Today we had open communion throughout the worship set. I prayed over the elements and explained communion, we then had stations available for people to partake of the elements when their hearts were prepared. It was cool to see people come up all throughout worship to take communion. Some kneeling at the altar to pray before receiving the elements. Very cool!
— The band was solid again today. Sang two Adam Cruz originals. LOVED both the originals we sang today. Yearn and Till The End!
— I think we need Adam to write an 80′s throw back worship tune, who’s with me in that?
— If you’re an Elementer, whenever you get a chance make sure and thank the praise team. They put in a TON of time to make happen what happens on Sunday morning. Thursday night rehearsal and the first ones here on Sunday morning.
— All of our volunteers do an OUTSTANDING job of giving their time to serve the church. SO THANKFUL for the volunteers we have.
— Continued our I Love The 80′s series today. Talking about Living a RADICAL Life. I’m having fun reminiscing to some 80′s stuff through this. Here are some excerpts from the day. Preached from Romans 12:9-13
— Spoke on our core value of Family today! We’re not made to live life alone.
— We have replaced love with tolerance as if somehow overlooking the sin in people’s lives is a sign that we love them.
— Tolerance is not the answer, TRUTH is the answer.
— Real love is not the overlooking of sin but the OPPOSING of it. (Romans 12:9 Don’t just pretend to love others, really love them. Hate what is wrong and hold tightly to what is good)
— A commentator on Romans 12:9 “Hate sin as you would hate the hell to which it leads.”
— How much do you have to hate someone to not tell them about sin? (watch THIS from Penn of Penn and Teller)
— If you’re looking for a group of people, a family, that will let you stay exactly where you are, you’re not looking for a radical life but a regular one, and last time I checked Jesus didn’t call us to regular living.
— One of the biggest dangers to the life of the Christian is not sin but indifference, for it is indifference that leads us to the doorway of sin.
— Most often, the way to inspire someone to greatness is to be great yourself. We MUST start leading by example, not just exhortation.
— Really enjoyed this weeks look into our family ties. Hope it helped you as you heard it.
— Pastors get comments every week on their sermons. Typically they are good comments. Bad comments are usually done anonymously or via email. But every so often you REALLY get a comment that hits home and encourages you. Maybe it comes from someone who doesn’t normally say anything. Maybe it’s the way in which it’s said or their use of words is more than just “good sermon” or “great job”. I got one of those comments today. A well thought, very sincere, encouraging word. It came at a GREAT time and was VERY appreciated.
— Did you know it’s been TWENTY YEARS since The Princess Bride came out! Random 80′s thought.
— If you are not currently in a Life Group I encourage you to get plugged in to one. Check out the new Life Group booklets at church and get signed up.
— Alright, that’s about it! Gonna watch the rest of the Bronco game, order pizza for the family and watch Amazing Race with my wife! Love relaxing on Sunday nights!
Following Christ,
Jeff

Did Your Shoes Make a Difference?
7 10 2009All I can say to this is WOW! Element Church, THIS is how your shoes are literally being the feet of Jesus in New Mexico. This is an email Terri received from one of the missionaries in the field there.
To our friends at Element Church,
Pastor Marvin shared last Sunday about how they were at the laundromat and there was a young woman there with a couple of children. The little boy was running around with just socks on his feet and the little girl had shoes on that were a couple sizes too big for her. They got into a conversation and the woman told Pastor Marvin that her husband was from another country and had left them to go back there. They were homeless, living out of their van, and she was washing the kids shoes, the only ones they had. The little girl was borrowing her older cousins shoes. Marvin had put a couple boxes of shoes in his truck for just such an occasion and was able to fit them all with shoes and invited them to come to church. They haven’t shown up so far but we are praying for them.
Another story he told was visiting a family just down the road from their house on the ‘rez’. One of the ladies there is called the “Babysitter”. There are six people living in the house that he said is smaller than our church building (that’s pretty small!) The one child there, a little boy around 2 or 3 yrs. of age, has a hearing problem and isn’t able to talk because of it. Marvin found a pair of shoes for him and as he sat talking to the adults (who he also found shoes for. One of them had shoes that were duct taped together), the little boy came up and put his arms around Marvin and gave him a big hug. The parents said he never does that to strangers and so it really touched Marvin’s heart. When he left, the little boy threw the door wide open and stood there waving at him. What a blessing to be able to share such simple things as shoes! I have some material that I am going to make into a blanket for the little boy and we’ll deliver it to him and hopefully get more acquainted with them.
Another story: When we visited with James at the Sexual Assault Center, and he gave us his cards – one day last week, Bill Ashe was walking through the parking lot of a store when a young woman, who had been crying, and her little girl came and asked for money. She said her boyfriend had beat her up and kicked her out of their house. She was looking for money to get a room for the night. Bill didn’t have any money but he was able to find her a place to stay and gave her James card to get in touch with to hopefully be referred to someplace that could help her more. Without the shoes, you wouldn’t have met James and wouldn’t have gotten his card!
Wayne took a box of shoes to where he is working to give out too. I haven’t heard if anyone has taken them or not. Also, one of our church families took some to give to their other families in need of shoes.
I’m sure more “Soul Testimonies” will be coming your way. Again, a BIG thank you to everyone at Element Church who donated from the bottom of their ‘feet’! You help our ministry in New Mexico continue onwards in ways only God knows about. There are so many hurting people here and if we can help them in any way, even if it’s a pair of shoes, it blesses God’s heart.
Wayne and I hope to come and meet you in person someday. God bless you and keep up your good works of ministering to others.
In Him,
Wayne & Sharon Cartwright

He Won’t Overlook
6 10 2009The stories in the Bible aren’t just there for fun. The failures of people aren’t written to make us feel better about ourselves, they are there to WARN us of the same dangers we face in following Christ and leading others to Him. When I read the Scripture I often read it with a slant toward ministry, because that is my vocation. I know that may not always be the best, but I tend to find so many great leadership lessons in Scripture for myself and so I share them.
I was reading in 1 Samuel a few weeks ago about Hophni and Phineas. They were priests in the Lord’s Temple, sons of Eli the Priest. 1 Samuel 2:12-17 says this:
12 Now the sons of Eli were scoundrels who had no respect for the Lord 13 or for their duties as priests. Whenever anyone offered a sacrifice, Eli’s sons would send over a servant with a three-pronged fork. While the meat of the sacrificed animal was still boiling, 14 the servant would stick the fork into the pot and demand that whatever it brought up be given to Eli’s sons. All the Israelites who came to worship at Shiloh were treated this way. 15 Sometimes the servant would come even before the animal’s fat had been burned on the altar. He would demand raw meat before it had been boiled so that it could be used for roasting. 16 The man offering the sacrifice might reply, “Take as much as you want, but the fat must be burned first.” Then the servant would demand, “No, give it to me now, or I’ll take it by force.” 17 So the sin of these young men was very serious in the Lord’s sight, for they treated the Lord’s offerings with contempt.
I wrote this in my journal. “They thought the Lord would overlook their sins because they were doing the Lord’s work.” We need reminded of something as pastors, teachers, leaders, followers of Christ…GOD WON’T OVERLOOK OUR SIN REGARDLESS OF WHAT WE ARE DOING FOR HIM! He takes it VERY seriously. They showed NO respect for the Lord OR the office to which they were called.
I challenge our pastoral staff often, DON’T take for granted the position in which God has placed you. Our lives MUST be lived ABOVE REPROACH. The moment I think my sins will be overlooked because of my office is the moment I become like Hophni and Phineas “A scoundrel showing no respect for the Lord or for my duties as a pastor”. My FIRST duty as a pastor is NOT preaching, leading worship, praying with people, visiting the sick, organizing finances, calendaring volunteers, planning or vision casting. It IS OBEYING JESUS! If I don’t get that, the rest is worthless.
He WON’T Overlook. If you don’t believe me, read 1 Samuel 3:11-14
Warned,
Jeff

Would You Know?
5 10 2009Judges 16:20 may be one of the saddest verses in all of Scripture. Not only because it actually happened to Samson, but because I think MANY people are living the same scenario today. It should serve as a warning to ALL of us. And for leaders, this should be your BIGGEST fear. It says this:
20 Then she cried out, “Samson! The Philistines have come to capture you!” When he woke up, he thought, “I will do as before and shake myself free.” But HE DIDN’T REALIZE the Lord had left him.
Didn’t realize? Didn’t realize? My heart sinks when I read that.
I have to ask, if you woke up tomorrow, and the Lord had left you, would you know? How much time do you spend with God alone? Do you know what His presence feels like? What sins have you grown accustomed to in your life that have gradually pushed the presence of God away? I think for too many Christians, the answer would be “No, I wouldn’t know.” DON’T LET IT HAPPEN!
This didn’t happen overnight for Samson. It was a gradual indifference to the value of God’s presence. He got closer and closer to revealing the secret of His strength. He consistently didn’t follow the Nazarite law to which he was bound. He simply didn’t value God’s presence, therefore He didn’t keep it. “I’ll do as I’ve done before!” He said. The thing is, IT WAS ONLY BY THE PRESENCE OF GOD THAT HE DID IT IN THE FIRST PLACE! And now when he tried without God’s presence…he failed!
Leonard Ravenhill said this: “The reason America is not seeing revival, is because we have become content to live without it!” WOW!
Would you know? Take a close look at your own life and ask that question.
Desperate for the presence of God,
Jeff
