Don’t forget to set your clocks back by one hour tonight. Anyone who is 1 hour early to church, we’ll know you forgot.

29 10 2009Hey Elementers! If you want to read ahead for Sunday you can read Psalm chapter 27. We’re taking a look at our core value of Worship and how it is vital to living a radical life. I’m VERY excited about what God has for us. Be prepared to be challenged, convicted and comforted from Sunday’s message. And in typical Element style, we’re pulling out a few surprises along the way.
Ready to worship,
Jeff

Who do I believe in?
29 10 2009Pastor Curtis’ wife Heather has a GREAT post up on her blog. I couldn’t have said it better myself, and have often wondered the same exact thing. You can read her post entitled “Fear” HERE. Great job Heather.
Believing in our God,
Jeff

“Look At My Stain Glassed Window”
28 10 2009There is a big push in the church world today to do things with excellence. If you were to read the core values of many of today’s most successful churches, you w0uld most likely read something about “creating a culture of excellence”. I for one, am ALL FOR excellence. If you’re going to be doing something in the name of Jesus and for people to hear ABOUT Jesus, you BETTER be attempting to do it with excellence. Doing things halfway or “good enough” is NOT God honoring. However, I think we/I need to understand something.
There is a BIG difference between excellence and significance. Something, even in our church, can be done VERY WELL, with excellence if you will, but have little to NO significance. No impact. Excellence should not be our goal, significance should. IMPACT should.
I’m not going to mention any church “projects” or “programs” outside this one conversation I had in my life and thought of today. I’m not trying to pin point any specific thing here, just point out a principle: I was invited one time to a round table of community church leaders to discuss some things in our community. At this meeting were pastors and leaders from various churches around town. One representative of a local ministry kept going on and on about their new stained glass window at their facility. They weren’t just talking about it, they had a real conundrum they were dealing with. Essentially this person said: “You should see our new window. It has ‘this’ and ‘this”. You can see it from ‘here’ and ‘here’. It is ‘this’ big and ‘this ‘high’. ‘So and so’ actually flew in from ‘this place’ to do it for us.” Then they concluded with this “Our window is SO BEAUTIFUL. How come no one is coming to see it?”
Wow! I have no idea what else they did at their organization, but I can tell you this. They did something with excellence in that window, but it had NO SIGNIFICANCE! Am I against stained glass windows? No. I think they are gorgeous. What I am against, is choosing to just focus on excellence, if there is no lasting significance in what we do. ANY church, at ANY time, ANYwhere, can have their own “stained glass window” to distract them.
Excellence is not our goal, significance is. Choose significant and impactful things to do…and do them with excellence.
Seeking significance,
Jeff

Willing To Wait
27 10 2009So Pastor Kody and I are in Charlotte, NC for a leadership event @ Elevation Church. As a part of our flight from Denver to Charlotte we had a brief layover in Washington Dulles airport. (random note…NOT impressed at all with the airport in our nations capital) Since we left Denver at 6 AM we were hungry and wanted to grab a bite before catching our connection. We had about one hour so we weren’t in a huge hurry. Right near our gate were two restaurants. Five Guys Burgers and Mayorga Coffee Roasters. I wanted to go to Five Guys but it was SLAMMED and had a huge line. We stepped aside to Mayorga which had two employees standing around doing nothing, because no one was in line. We stepped right up, ordered a vitamin water and a chicken wrap that was displayed in the cooler case. Paid (overpaid) and was on our way. As we sat at our gate, and disappointingly (is that a word) tasted the wrap we had just ordered, I thought of this:
There is a reason Five Guys had a line. (I know, I’m brilliant) But seriously. Mayorga was content getting the random leftover business from people who weren’t willing to wait in line at Five Guys. Here’s the problem: NO ONE is going to come back to Mayorga. If they continue to do their business in the way they are doing it, they will not create a loyal and faithful customer base that would be willing to wait in line for their service.
Oh, they’ll stay open. They’ll pay the bills. They’ll offer a product. But it’s not something willing to wait for. It’s not something people would stand in line for. It’s not something that people will talk about (positively). That people will invite their friends to. Or that most people will come back to. Five Guys IS!
Made me think about church. We have the GREATEST STORY EVER KNOWN! How do we present it? How do we “serve” it? Are going to do church in a way that people will just keep the doors open, pay the bills, take the leftovers, remain the same? …or will we do church in a way that people will WAIT IN LINE to attend if they have to? Invite their friends to it? Talk about (positively)? Anticipate it? Want more of it?
I know we CAN’T make church all about HOW we do it, but I wonder how many churches are just a Mayorga Coffee shop? Staying open hoping someone isn’t willing to wait in line at Five Guys.

Details are important…
26 10 2009Actually, I’d say they are essential. Now, I have to admit, I’ve learned this the hard way in life AND in leadership. So many times in my own life and in my leadership (still trying to perfect this), I focus on the “big” things and forget the details. But it’s the details that make the “big” stuff BIG.
Here is my analogy, please forgive the illustration, you’ll probably never forget it, and I’m NOT trying to be crude: How many times have you had to use the restroom (the kind that takes more time), and sat down to do your business without checking to see if there was a toilet beneath you? I’d bet the answer is NEVER! BUT, how many times have you had to do the same thing, proceeded to sit down…do your business…WITHOUT checking to see if there was an ample supply of toilet paper! BUSTED! I’d assume it’s happened to all of us. It’s an “Oh crap moment”! (Pun intended) And in that moment, it didn’t matter that the “big” thing was there (toilet) if the details were not (paper)…right?
Depending on when and where this happens, determines the consequences of the oversight. At home with family? No big deal. Yell for help. At home alone? Slightly inconvenienced. At a friends house? A little embarrassing. Meeting your future in laws at their house? DISASTER!
Planning the sermon, songs, illustrations & videos for Sunday morning…toilet. Making sure EVERYONE is informed of and ready for the transitions…paper!
Designing a KILLER graphic, invites and mass mailer for an event…toilet. Making sure ALL the information is correct on the material…paper!
Having a GREAT Scripture and idea for a sermon…toilet. Studying the background, language, audience and KNOWING how God wants this applied to YOUR congregation by intentional times of prayer and study…paper!
And the list goes on…you get the picture!
You may get away a few times with NOT checking for toilet paper in leadership, but eventually, you’re at the future in-laws and it’s a disaster! I might have just coined a new staff phrase as we plan out events. “Have you checked for toilet paper?”
Checking,
Jeff

Sunday Rumination (10-25-09)
25 10 2009First off, I TOTALLY missed my Element family today! Pastor Kody and I are down in Charlotte, NC getting ready for a leadership event called Impart, put on by Elevation Church. We came down a few days early to attend Elevation Church and get the inside/out tour of their ministry.
— It has been a LONG weekend already. I picked up Kody at 3 AM Saturday morning to head to a 6 AM flight from Denver. We arrived in Charlotte around 3 PM, went to church last night at 6 PM at Elevations Matthews Campus. We got up at 4:45 AM this morning and spent they day at one of Elevations multi-site campus’, Providence Campus.
— They meet in a high school and are totally portable at the Providence Campus. (Brought back memories of our days in the theater)
— It was an AWESOME opportunity for us to spend time with some key staff members, ask questions and observe a GREAT ministry.
— This was our view during the 8:30 AM service at the Providence Campus of Elevation:
— Its always tough to be away from Element, however, I am VERY excited about this leadership learning experience.
— Talked with Adam and sounded like Element was rockin’ again today. We have LOTS of families out sick. Sounds like some affected by H1N1. Praying for all the families who are struggling with illnesses.
— We continued our series I Love The 80′s today, talking about totally RAD livin’:
— Spoke on our core value of significance today.
— Yes, I spoke and wasn’t even there. We did something we’ve never done before. I did my sermon via video, which we recorded earlier this week. I wasn’t there, so have no idea how it went. Hope it was well received.
— We recorded it in a couple different locations.
— “So often it seems like the Bible heroes are on God’s A-Team and we are on God’s B-Team. I think we feel like Saul or Gideon did when God asked them to lead His people: ‘Why are you asking me? I’m nothing but a nobody!’”
— Big Question: How do I make God’s A-Team?
— Main thought: I don’t want to live a life people would talk about, I want to live a life that GOD would talk about.
— In Job 1:8 God asks satan “Have you NOTICED my servant Job. He is the finest man in all the earth. He is blameless, a man of complete integrity. He fears God and stays away from evil.” GOD said THAT about a MAN! That blows me away.
— What would God say about ME?
— Oswald Chambers said “It is inbred in us that we have to do exceptional things for God; but we have not. We have to be exceptional at ordinary things.”
— NONE of the Bible or modern day Christian heroes set out to have a story PEOPLE would talk about, they all set out to have a story GOD would talk about. That’s why people talk about it!
— Hoped the message helped inspire you to live a life of signicance that GOD would talk about.
— Alright, that’s about it. Excited for what the week holds here in Charlotte. We’ll be flying home on Wednesday.
— I LOVE leading all of you who call Element home! Can’t wait to worship with you again this coming Sunday as we tackle our core value of WORSHIP!
Following Christ,
Jeff

Anyone wanna sing with me…? “You’re the best, around. No one can ever keep you down” Pretty sure that song was from Karate Kid huh?
Lovin’ the 80′s,

How Do You Respond?
23 10 2009I’ve been SO challenged by the history of the Kings of Judah and Israel as I’m reading through 1 & 2 Kings. If you can read 1 & 2 Kings and NOT take obedience seriously, then you have some serious issues.
In 2 Kings 22, King Josiah has taken the throne of Judah. He became king when he was 8 years old, following two evil Kings named Manasseh and Amon. By the time Josiah was 26, Hilkiah the High Priest found a scroll in the Temple with the Book of the Law written on it. Shaphan told the King about the Book of the Law and read it to King Josiah.
2 Kings 22:11 & 13b says this: “When the king heard what was written in the Book of the Law, he tore his clothes in despair…We have not been doing EVERYTHING it says we must do.”
How do you respond when you read the Scripture? I think so often we open up God’s Word, the Book of the Law if you will, read it but say: “Well, I’m only human!” or “That was then, things have changed.” I’m afraid we don’t take seriously the things that are written in it. I mean, do we REALLY believe that “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right”? (2 Tim. 4:16) I think Josiah believed that.
James 1:22 says “Don’t just listen to God’s Word. You MUST do what it says. Otherwise you are only fooling yourselves.” Josiah believed that, LONG before it was even written. I wonder if too many of us are just fooling ourselves? Reading the Book of the Law, but doing NOTHING about it. Josiah couldn’t just read the Word and NOT do something. “We haven’t been doing EVERYTHING it says we must do.”
How do you respond?
Challenged,
Jeff
