Leadership Learning

31 08 2009

Recently the pastors of Element and some of our leaders attended a satellite broadcast of Willow Creek Community Church’s Leadership Summit.  Cheyenne Hills Church here in town sponsored it, and we were so grateful for them to open their doors to serve other pastors and churches in our region with this event.  (By the way, Hills Church literally ROCKED IT when it came to hosting this event.  Their hospitality, organization and service was stellar)  It’s been a couple of weeks now and I’m reviewing the notes I took at the conference.  Wanted to get them out, and my blog is the best place for me to do that.

Session 1:  Bill Hybels

—  “I’m not sure we’re ever going to experience the old normal ever again. (economy, business, stock market)  The normal we all knew and loved has left the building.  We are now leading in a new reality.”

—  Hybels opening talk was on this idea of how to lead in new realities.  “When things change, and change drastically and quickly, what do we do?”

—  He compared our recent change to rogue waves on the ocean.  “Rogue waves create new levels of leadership opportunities.”

—  “Raging seas call for ruthless organization and decision making.”

—  “In new realities we MUST be the church to our community AND to each other NO MATTER WHAT!  We have to ask ourselves Do we still believe that Jesus, through the local church is the hope of the world?”

—  One thing I noticed during his talk and wrote down in my notes REALLY encouraged me.  Hybels is an INCREDIBLE communicator, but his style is VERY different and unique.  It appeared he was preaching off of index sized cards.  He must have flipped 50 or more cards in one talk (maybe 100).  One or two thoughts on each card and he was on to the next.  I wrote this down “EVERYONE has their own communication style.  We must let GOD lead through that style and NOT try to be like someone else.”

—  “Even in an economic downturn the #1 need of people is Jesus.  That NEVER changes.”

—  “In new realities we are forced to walk more by faith than by sight.”  (That is a good thing)

—  This was so good.  “What leaders need in a crisis is NOT more money, but more TIME!”  Spoke on leaders being financially responsible to prepare for rogue waves, even financially.  Having emergency funds gives you TIME when a rogue wave hits.

—  Speaking directly to the heart of each leader:  “The best thing you bring to the table is a filled up bucket and a heart that is right with God.”  Speaking of replenishing your mind, body and spirit.

There was a TON of other stuff I wrote down that wouldn’t make sense in one liners here.  That is Session 1.  I’ll be talking about more later.

Learning,

Jeff

Sunday Ruminations (8-30-09)

30 08 2009

Seriously?  August is over?  Unbelievable.  It’s been a GREAT month and a GREAT sermon series which we closed out today.  Here ar emy ruminations.

— Had a GREAT visit with my parents in Gillette over the weekend.  They are now the worship pastors at the church I came from (High Plains Community Church)  It is nice to have them close enough to go up for a weekend overnight visit.

— Sabrina and the kids stayed for the whole weekend and are attending their groundbreaking ceremony on their new building as we speak.

—  We REALLY need people to move from 2nd service to 1st or 3rd.  We have the most room in our 1st service to grow.  If you’re an Elementer attending 2nd service PLEASE consider moving to first or third.  PLEASE?

—  We were maxed out in 2nd service again today.  There were a few seats but not many.

— Gotta give props to Adam today.  We sang his new original song “Till The end” today with the full band.  WOW it was amazing.  LOVED it!  The band NAILED that song.

— We sang it last week acoustic style.  This week the full band came in, and that song has IT!

—  I hope to hear that song a an album someday!

— We blew the roof off at the end of 3rd service.  We closed out our series with the song “I Am Free”. I think it speaks to the heart of what we’ve shared this whole month.  The 3rd service crazies were in FULL effect.  That final song was ROCKIN’

— I had a 3 person panel answer questions today about sex.  We had several questions come in through the last few weeks then we took some questions live.

— Pastor Dan Judge (local Biblical Counselor) and Kathy Cordell (Freedom Steps Life Coaching) sat on the panel with me.

— They each gave such GREAT insight that I otherwise wouldn’t have had into our sexuality and specifically sexual sin.

— Coming from a counseling and coaching perspective helped see things from a different angle than just from me.

—  Thanks Dan and Kathy for your EXCELLENT help.

—  Taking live questions is ALWAYS un-nerving, but I LOVE providing that opportunity through spontaneity.  Each service had some awesome and very open questions.  It was VERY nice to have my panel partners to help take those questions.

—  I don’t know what the final spiritual results are going to be from this series, but it sure seemed like God has been REALLY connecting with people through these topics.  Our prayer from the beginning has been for freedom, victory, healing and restoration.

—  Several people left today thanking us for doing this series.  One woman in particular left with tears rolling down her face, thankful for the series.  LOVE seeing people connect with what is being done.

— Love even MORE seeing the Holy Spirit take what we’ve done and connecting to the hearts of the people.

—  I’m STOKED about our new series starting next week called BE.  We’re talking about what it means to BE the church.

—  I’m tellin’ ya, you WON”T want to miss what we are doing this Sunday.  You’ll NEVER forget it.

—  Be The Church Day is coming up on Sept. 20th.  We had a TON of response at the volunteer table today.  Nearly EVERY wish list item was taken.  Almost ALL volunteer spots are filled up.

— We REALLY need help in childcare for that day.  One of the BEST ways you can serve during that day is helping in our kids care.  Pastor Derek is heading it up and will be doing a GREAT job with a service project all their own.  Stop by the Be The Church table on Sunday to see how you can be a part.

—  Hopefully we’ll be doing something special EACH Sunday of the whole September series.  Excited about what is coming up.

—  That’s it.  Gonna try and catch a late afternoon snooze.

— Element Church, I LOVE being a part of God’s Kingdom with you.

Till The End,

Jeff

Fusion Starting Up

25 08 2009

Tonight and tomorrow night (Tuesday and Wednesday) our Fusion Student Ministry Groups are firing up.  This post is intended for a few things.

#1  Prayer — If you would please, PRAY for our jr. high and sr. high students that God would literally ROCK THEIR WORLD this year through this ministry.  Pastor Andy and his incredible team of volunteer leaders are dedicated to seeing these students connect with the Life in Christ and follow Him completely.  They are determined that these students find practical ways to make an IMPACT in this city.  Pray for them.

#2  Information — Varsity Fusion (9th – 12th grades) meet ever Tuesday night from 6:30 – 8 PM in the Fusion room at Element Church.  You can come in the front main double doors and someone will be there to greet you.  JV Fusion (6th – 8th grades) meets ever Wednesday night from 6:30 – 8 PM at the same location.  Both groups are slightly different but HIGHLY relevant and applicable to where your student is in their stage of life.

#3  Commendation — Pastor Andy is an INCREDIBLE leader and has a HUGE heart for the students of Element Church and Cheyenne.  God has poured into his heart a white hot vision for this ministry and Andy is obediently following it.  Andy has some INCREDIBLE challenges for these students to step up and be the leaders of TODAY that God wants them to be.  Our youth groups are NOT the leaders of tomorrow.  They are gifted NOW by the Holy Spirit to have a God sized impact in this city.

I’m excited to see what happens in Fusion this year.  Looking forward to GOD things among our students.

Proud,

Jeff

Whose Reputation?

24 08 2009

I LOVE when you read Scripture and something BRAND NEW pops out to you.  I was so challenged this morning as I was spending time with God and His Word with this:  “Whose reputation are you more concerned about?”

In Numbers chapter 14 the 12 spies had just scouted out the Promise Land.  They were on the CUSP of experiencing all that God had promised them.  The spies came back however, and 10 of them stirred up fear and dissension among ALL the Israelites.  They DID speak of the greatness of the Promise Land, but they also added “We will be DESTROYED by the giants who live there if we go in”.  ONLY Caleb and Joshua said “Let’s take the land for God is with us.”  The entire community of Israel turned on Moses AND God while demanding they go back to Egypt.  God responds to Moses with this statement out of his disgust and displeasure with the rebellion of His people.

“I will disown them and destroy them with a plague. Then I will make YOU into a nation greater and mightier than they are!”

God basically tells Moses, my new people will be from YOUR line.  I will make YOUR name great as I promised Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  MOSES will be the new name on everyone’s lips.  This Bible says “But Moses objected”.  When I read on and saw WHY Moses objected I was thouroughly convicted.

“Now if you slaughter all these people with a single blow, the nations that have heard of your fame will say, 16 ‘The Lord was not able to bring them into the land he swore to give them, so he killed them in the wilderness.’”

Moses was not necessarily concerened for the people.  He wasn’t concerned about his position or leadership.  Moses was MORE concerned witih GOD’S reputation than his own.  Whose reputation matters more to me? When it comes to leadership.  Life.  Parenting. Friendship.  Career.  WHATEVER!  Am I willing to object to MY name being great, if it means GOD”S name will not?  My desire as a husband, father, pastor, and leader is that GOD’S reputation will ALWAYS trump mine.

Trumped,

Jeff

Sunday Rumination (8-23-09)

23 08 2009

The most awkward but fun sermon for me in a LONG time!  Here are my ruminations on the day.

—  2nd service was SLAMMED today.  Holy cow.  Had about every available chair in there today.

— 247 kids in all three services today.  It was nuts.

— If you are an Element regular attender and attend 2nd service…PLEASE consider moving to 1st or 3rd.  Most guests will attend 2nd service so we need to open up seats in that service.  It will help a TON if you would switch services.

— I think people are starting to come back from summer.  Hope so.

— Announced our new sermon series for September today.  BE:  Uncapping the potential of the local church  I promise, you DON”T want to miss the kickoff Sunday of this series.  We are doing something at Element that we have NEVER done before.   You won’t forget it.

— The whole series is gonna be filled with some memorable moments.  Including Be The Church Day on Sept. 20th. It starts on Sept. 6th

—  Spoke about what God says about sex in marriage today.  I think it may very well be the most awkward YET most needed sermon on the whole sex topic.

— You can watch all the services online at www.elementweb.net then clicking on “media”

—  Proverbs 5:15-23 was the text for today also referenced Song of Solomon 4

—  I challenged the couples at the end to pray together for God’s strength to make it “Till The End”! Every service there were couples at the altar praying and huddled together all over the worship center praying.

—  I would love to see God REVOLUTIONIZE our marriages to be ALL that He called them to be.  That husbands would love their wives as Christ loved the Church, and that women would submit to their husbands and to Christ.

— Adam wrote a song called Till The End.  It was birthed out of this series.  MAN is it good!  He and Amber sang it to close out the service.

— He played it for us in the office earlier this week and I said “We HAVE to end service with that song”  So good.

—  247 kids.  Seriously?  That is NUTS!

—  Don’t forget next Sunday we are taking questions for our panel discussion on sex.  questions@elementweb.net or look on your worship guide for other contact info.

— That’s about it.  Gonna try and get a power nap in.

Following Christ,

Jeff

One Word

20 08 2009

I’m searching for the right word to describe this Sunday and I can’t find it.  Awkward?  Yeah, it’s going to be awkward.  Fun?  Oh yeah, it’s going to be fun.  Eye opening?  Hopefully.  So far we’ve looked at the Power of Sex (No other sin so clearly affects the body).  The wounded man (Being who God called us to be).  The delicate woman (Believing who God says you ARE).  And now…what does the Bible say about sex in marriage?  We’re taking a straightforward and Biblical look at sex from Proverbs 5 and Song of Solomon 4.  (If you want to do some advanced reading)  I am CRAZY excited about Sunday.  I’m hoping Adam will bust out his new original song for ya this week.  Whether you’re married, single, divorced or widowed I really believe that this message will offer us HOPE, FREEDOM and GRACE!  Come ready for God’s Word to inspire your life.  YES, even when talking about sex.

Excited,

Jeff

XXXPosed Final Sunday

19 08 2009

On Sunday, August 30th we are going to be closing out this series on how sex is affecting the church today.  It’s been AMAZING to see the Truth of God’s Word and the grace of our Father save, forgive, heal, restore and SET PEOPLE FREE the last 3 weeks.  I sat down this morning with Dan Judge and Kathy Cordell who will be joining me on the stage that final Sunday to answer ANY question people may have on a biblical response to sexuality, sexual sin, etc.  Dan is a licensed Biblical counselor that deals extensively with all sorts of men’s issues.  Kathy is a trained Life Coach who deals extensively with women’s issues.  What I LOVED about sitting down with each of them was 2 things.  1.  God has saved and forgiven them from the very things they are now helping people work through.  2.  They BOTH held up the Bible as THE AUTHORITY on EVERY area of our life…including our sexuality.  They will be incredibly helpful for us as we close out the series and God speaks through them.  You can ask ANY question, and, you can email us your questions (questions@elementweb.net), drop them in the question box on Sunday, text us @ (307) 433-4814 or write it on your connection card on Sunday.  We’ll also being taking live questions via text message on Sunday the 3oth.  Don’t miss this AWESOME opportunity to hear from people who help others deal with the consequences of sexual sin in their lives.  I am SO excited to see how God closes out this series.

Expecting,

Jeff

Where’s The Beef?

19 08 2009

Remember that commercial?  If you’re too much younger than me (35), you won’t.  I barely do.  It was a Wendy’s commercial that focused on their burger having “more beef”.  Three little old ladies, looking for evidence of a hamburger inside a giant bun.  You can watch the commercial HERE if you want.  What does this have to do with anything?  Well, I’m asking the same question of Christianity today.  The same question of the church today.  “Where’s the beef?”  Where is the EVIDENCE that we are who we claim we are?

I just finished reading through Leviticus today.  There are definitely some parts of the book that are VERY difficult to get through, but if you aren’t careful you will miss such GREAT truth and application as it relates to us THROUGH JESUS.

Leviticus 26:46 says “These are the decrees, regulations, and instructions that the Lord gave through Moses on Mount Sinai as EVIDENCE of the relationship between himself and the Israelites.” All the festivals, rituals, ceremonies and commands served as THE EVIDENCE of their relationship to God.

I paused and asked this question.  “What is the evidence of our relationship today?”  JESUS IS!  Jesus was and IS the fulfillment of ALL the Old Testament.  It is Him THROUGH US that serves as the sign of our relationship with God.  So again I ask “WHERE”S THE BEEF?”

If Jesus is the evidence, what is He producing in us?  What’s He producing in the church?  If Jesus is the evidence are we “known by our love”?  (John 13:34-35)  If Jesus is the evidence are we loving God with ALL our heart, soul, mind and strength and our neighbor as ourselves?  (Mark 12:29-30)  If Jesus is the evidence are we feeding the hungry, giving water to the thirsty, inviting the stranger into our home, clothing the naked, caring for the sick or visiting those in prison?  (Matthew 25:34-36)  If Jesus is the evidence are we striving for holiness EVEN as our Heavenly Father is holy?  (Matthew 5:48)

I’ve been challenged by this in my own life and this one verse in Leviticus sparked it all again.  I have to ask “Where’s the beef”?

Seeking Evidence,

Jeff

Obedience or Obstinance

17 08 2009

I think sometimes we mistake being stubbornly opposed to “the world” with doing good for the Kingdom.  Petitions, boycotts, protests and picket lines become our way of advancing morality and shining light into a dark world.  Now, I’m ALL FOR standing up for Truth and being diligent in promoting Godly values…but I wonder if there is a better way.  This is not in response to anything in particular except one verse I read in Proverbs.

Proverbs 28:4  says “To reject the law is to praise the wicked; to obey the law is to fight them.”

Our biggest weapon against the darkness is NOT picket lines, boycotts, petitions or protests.  Our greatest weapon is OBEDIENCE!  What would happen if ALL people claiming to be “born again” would just start living like it?  What  if we focused on obedience to God, instead of obstinacy to the darkness?  What if the church was known MORE for what it’s FOR and LESS for what it’s AGAINST?  To be obstinate, is to be stubbornly immovable.  To obey, is to advance.

We are to ADVANCE against the darkness, and according to this verse,  the key to that is OBEDIENCE.  THAT is how we fight the wicked.  I’m convinced that if Christians would just start living like Christians, the obstinance wouldn’t be needed.

Trying to obey,

Jeff

Sunday Rumination (8-16-09)

16 08 2009

Sometimes words don’t describe a moment.  We had one today.  AMAZING response from the ladies.  Here are my ruminations on the day.

— First off, my parents celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary yesterday.  They are an AMAZING example of commitment.  Happy Anniversary mom and dad.  I’m proud to be your son!  I hope our kids will see our 39th and MANY more.

—  We had an altar call every service today.  The call was not specifically for salvation but more for healing, forgiveness and freedom of sexual issues in women’s lives.  BUT, one young lady got saved 2nd service.  It was AWESOME!

— If only for the one.

— The altars were flooded today in every service.  We had someone there for EVERY counselor in EVERY service and in 2nd and third we had MORE people than counselors at the altar.

— Third service is QUICKLY becoming my favorite.  For the longest time it was BY FAR the most difficult service to preach in, sing in, etc.  The last two weeks third service has been STINKIN” amazing!

—  The Spirit was so thick in third service.  The altar was overflowing with ladies who came forward in response to the call.

—  To all the ladies who helped at the altar…You guys were AMAZING!  Thank you SO MUCH!

— To see women come and be embraced by you guys was so cool to see.  You were really the arms of the Father today wrapping around broken and  hurting women.

— If you haven’t caught it yet, I spoke to women today.  Well, kinda.  I really hammered the guys again too:

—  I really believe that much of the sexual issues related to women are caused buy us men NOT being who God called us to be.

—  I apologized on behalf of all men to the women who were in the service today.  I felt we needed to start off by asking for forgiveness for the way we have (mis)treated them, and our failure to lead them.

—  We’ve been blaming women since the Garden of Eden when Adam told God “It’s the woman’s fault”!  We, like Adam, have failed to own our mistakes and chose not to lead our wives as we should.

— “The King delights in your beauty”

—  Men struggle with being who God called them to be.  Women struggle with BELIEVING who God says they ARE and living like it!

—  Dad’s, you need to be giving your daughters positive and appropriate affection.  If you don’t, they will find it in another man but it will be neither positive nor appropriate.

—  I did tell the single guys  “The next time you put your hands or mouth somewhere it doesn’t belong, I’m praying that burned into your brain will be an image of your mom or sister.  (1 Timothy 5:2)

—  “I hope I just ruined your next makeout session!”

—   Regardless of what you look like, how you feel, what’s been done or what’s been said “The King delights in your beauty”

—  I smashed a full length mirror in every service.  Women, while spending lots of time looking in the mirror, generally don’t like what it says back to them.  You need to smash the mirror and look to the cross.  (I had to smash something)

—  We gave away princess crown rings to the ladies today.  It was sappy but hopefully it reminds the ladies that they are daughters of the KING!  He delights in their beauty.

— Today, was one of my favorite messages of ALL time!  I knew EXACTLY what God wanted me to say and was SO challenged about it myself.   You can listen or watch it HERE later this week.  You can listen or watch all our messages on our web.

— Thank you to Kathy Cordell for being my sounding board for this message.  Kathy, your insight was VERY clarifying and inspiring for me.  Thank you!

— I hope EVERYONE understands that I am challenged LONG before you are in these topics.  I’m not immune to needing to step it up either.

— I take VERY seriously living out what I preach.  I don’t take lightly that what I demand from the pulpit BETTER be fleshed out in my own life.

—  Spoke about my daughters today.  SO challenged to lead them into purity and confidence in who they are in Christ as they grow older.  I know they have to make their own choices, but I am going to do ALL I can to make sure they KNOW they are beautiful and LIVE like it.

— The band was SPOT ON today.  The version they did of Rescue was amazing!  The Spirit of God was so evident and powerful all through worship.

— It’s amazing what quality and authentic (need both) worship does when setting up the Word.  Worshiping prepares the hearer for the Word but MAN does it also prepare ME to give it.  I need worship before I go up and speak.  Totally helps me get in the right mode.

— The band closed service and led the altar call with the song “Beautiful” by Bethany Dillon.  We actually switched it up after first service from the full sound to a more intimate sound.

— The way we did the song in 2nd and 3rd was the original way Adam wanted to do it.  I loved the full version that I talked him into it.  I apologized after first service, told him he was right and said lets go back to the mellow version.  (So that’s what it feels like to be wrong)  lol

— The song is SO powerful and Adam found it pretty late in the creative game.  Kati, Amanda and the band completely pulled it off and it was a PERFECT way to end the service.

— A ladies accountability and purity discipleship Life Group will be starting up on Thursday’s at 7 PM.  To sign up, email help4women@elementweb.net

—  Men’s group is continuing this Wednesday at 7 PM and it is NOT too late to get involved.  help4men@elementweb.net

—  Had some AWESOME conversations with people today.

— Alright, I’m starting rambling.  Great services.  Great crowd.  Great God!

Till the end,

Jeff
