Are you willing to run naked?

30 07 2009

No, this is not some crazy marketing tool for Element Church.  Although I wouldn’t put it past some churches to try.  I talked about Joseph and vision yesterday (You can read it HERE).  Today I want to talk about something else Joseph did that should challenge us.  Ready?

Joseph was willing to run out of Potipher’s house naked, because it was better than giving up his purity. “How could I do such a wicked thing?  It would be a great sin against God.” He said.  “Joseph tore himself away (from Potipher’s wife’s grip on his cloak), but he left his cloak in her hand as he ran from the house.“  Are you willing to run naked?

1.  But if I confess what sin I’m struggling with, it is going to be embarrassing!  The embarrassment of running naked was better than the shame & guilt of sin.

2.  But people will think I’m crazy if I do what God’s asking me to do!  The sacrifice of reputation among his peers was worth keeping the presence of God.

3.  But if I make this decision I might lose my job!  The value of following Jesus was HIGHER than being second in command in Egypt.

Are you willing to run naked?
Willing,

Jeff

Vision Is VITAL…

29 07 2009

…But it’s also VERY tricky.  Whether it’s a prophetic vision (speaking the future), or foresight vision (“This is what God’s wanting us to do”) it is vital, but tricky.  EVERY organization (secular or Christian) needs a strong vision.  Companies and churches without strong vision, usually don’t last, or at least don’t flourish.  The longer I go in ministry the more valuable I see, and more strongly I believe, that vision is VITAL.  But MAN is it tricky.

As I was reading in Genesis today I read the story of Joseph in Genesis 37.  Here are a couple things God spoke to me about vision.

1.  There is a right AND wrong time to cast vision. God may give you a “vision” or “dream” He wants you to fulfill, but there is a RIGHT time and a WRONG time to deliver it.  In Genesis it tells us that Jacob loved Joseph more than his other brothers.  It also says that his brothers HATED him because of it.  Joseph has a dream about his brothers bowing down to him.  He told them and the Word says “They hated him all the more.”  THEN he soon again has another one.  What does he do?  CASTS THE VISION to a group that already hates him.  I know the end of the story and how it all works out, but God just spoke to me: “There is a time and place for vision, and it may not always be the day after I give it to you.”

2.  The WAY vision’s communicated is important. Telling a group of men who already hate you “You’re going to bow to me” may not be the best communication style.  WORDS MATTER when communicating vision.  If you haven’t got it all worked out in your brain, don’t let it out of your mouth.  POORLY communicated vision, EVEN if the vision is from God, can create DI-vision.

3.  People will get mad at vision EVEN when it is right, AND even whet it’s best for them or the kingdom. Josephs dreams…his visions were CORRECT.  They were prophetic.  They REALLY happened.  Josephs dreams…his visions were the BEST.   Not only did the fulfillment of Joseph’s dream save his brothers from starvation years later, it preserved the line of Christ (Judah’s family).  Regardless though.  Even though the vision was RIGHT and BEST, when Joseph came to visit his brothers in the field they said:  “Look, here comes the dreamer.  Let’s KILL him.”

Vision is VITAL, but it’s also TRICKY.  The TIME and the WAY are very important in how you deliver.  But I’m convinced, that REGARDLESS of how you say it or when you say it, there will ALWAYS be people who say “Here comes the dreamer.  Let’s take him out”.

If God’s given you vision, don’t EVER back down from it.  But be VERY careful in WHEN and HOW you communicate it.  Vision is VITAL, but it’s TRICKY.

Jeff

When’s the last time you laughed…

28 07 2009

…at God?  I’m not talking about in a disrespectful or blasphemous way.  I’m talking about a “You’re going to do WHAT?” kind of way.  Or a “HE DID WHAT?” kind of way.  Some of the stories in the Bible, the characters must of just laughed when they heard God’s plan.  What He wanted THEM to do.  I am in Genesis right now in my daily devotions and read the other day about Abraham and Sarah.  God’s plan to give Abraham descendants as numerous as the sands of the seashore through Sarah, was literally preposterous.  It was laughable.  In fact, THEY DID laugh.

In Genesis 17 God told Abraham that Sarah would be blessed with offspring.  Verse 17 says this: “Then Abraham bowed down to the ground, but he laughed to himself in disbelief. ‘How could I become a father at the age of 100?’ he thought. ‘And how can Sarah have a baby when she is ninety years old?’”

Then in chapter 18 Sarah over hears the Lord speaking to Abraham.  The Lord said “About this time next year Sarah will bear a son.”  Verse 12 says this “So she laughed silently to herself and said, ‘How could a worn-out woman like me enjoy such pleasure, especially when my master—my husband—is also so old?’”

Then in chapter 21, Isaac is born.  And verse 6 says this “And Sarah declared, ‘God has brought me laughter. All who hear about this will laugh with me.’” Why will they laugh?  Because God accomplished the impossible.  The Lord said earlier in the story to Abraham “Why did Sarah laugh. Is ANYTHING too hard for the Lord.” They will laugh, not in disrespect, but in awe and disbelief.

I hope that God is ALWAYS calling me to things that make me laugh.  I hope He asks me to do things that, without the intervention of God Almighty, are literally impossible.  I don’t want to live my life in a way that I don’t need God.  I hope that in my life, I’ll be around such HUGE God moments, that I’ll just laugh.  Laugh at the marvelous mystery and greatness of God and that really, NOTHING is impossible with God.

Laughing,

Jeff

Putting feet to your faith

27 07 2009

IMG00831Had an AWESOME experience this week with the generosity of an Element family to another.  It truly is putting feet to faith and helping out someone in need.  We have a family in Elemnet who is working their way out of a major debt load.  They are doing things the right way.  Giving faithfully of their tithe to God’s church.  MAJOR spending cutbacks.  Selling possessions and getting on a healthy and balanced budget.  They had to get rid of a vehicle that was WAY over their budget so they were in need of another family vehicle.  Well, another Element family heard of their situation and felt led to help out.

One of the spouses had just received a work vehicle and so they were not in need of a mini-van they owned and was paid for.  So what did they do with it?  SOLD IT…just kidding.  They gave it to the family in need.  Straight up, no strings attached, putting feet to their faith generosity.  THEN today at church, they dropped a check on them to pay for new tires.  WHAT?  I LOVE IT!  That is what it’s all about folks.  It is so cool seeing people follow the prompting of God and being generous when He asks.

Inspired,

Jeff

Rumination Additions (7-26-09)…

26 07 2009

Just got an email from Pastor Derek.  The teacher in Explorers (3 yrs – pre K) in 2nd service today presented the Gospel message.  7 kids prayed to receive Jesus.  WOO HOO!  Derek follows up with EVERY child via their parents each time a decision is made in the kids classes.  The parents help him figure out what students “really” made a decision.  Derek does an AWESOME job following up.  This gives a GREAT opportunity for parents to discuss the Gospel with their kids.  Each time we’ve had parents say “I think ‘Johnny’ was just following instructions”, Or “I really don’t think ‘Johnny’ understands it yet, we will make sure and keep talking to him about it.”  But also every time we  get “It was for real”.  God is changing hearts in our little ones too and it blows me away!

Following Christ,

Jeff

Sunday Ruminations (7-26-09)

26 07 2009

Finished off our Untouchables series today.  Great services.  Here are my ruminations on the day.

—  Spoke on THE MOST controversial subject in church today.  It makes more people angry than ANY other subject talked about in church.

— Drum roll please….MONEY!

— Spoke directly about tithing actually.  Money and tithing CANNOT be separated when being taught.  It would be like teaching someone who wants to lose weight about exercise but not diet.  The two go hand in hand.

— We didn’t hold back ANY punches on tithing today.  I fully believe it is KEY in our financial freedom and expected from us by God.

— Here are some excerpts on today’s message.

-  Tithing isn’t a wealth issue it is a heart issue.  If you aren’t giving now, you won’t give when you have more.  It starts where you’re at.

-  God doesn’t want your money.  He wants your freedom.

-  Freedom financially can only come when I surrender EVERYTHING to Jesus, including my finances.

-  We won’t even give our leftovers to guests, yet we offer them to God and expect Him to be satisfied with it.

-  I’m sick and tired of Christians using the banner of the New Covenant,  age of grace, Spirit led, New Testament Christianity to LOWER the bar spiritually.  EVERY teaching of Jesus not only raised the bar, He OBLITERATED it.

-  How come everyone who claims “free will giving” always gives less than 10%?

-  You can give 10% to the church and not be giving a DIME to God.  Our trust is NOT in the tithe, but in GOD.

-  God doesn’t need a tip, he desires to be worshipped.

— There ya go, a little extra tid bits from the message today.

— Shared some staggering statistics today too on what we Americans spend our money on and how much we give to the local church and missions.

— We also shared where the money given to Element Church goes.  Broke down percentage wise where every dollar is spent.  I know that one of the reasons people don’t give to church is a lack of trust of what the church will do with it.

— We want to model the tithe concept, so starting today 10% of every offering given at Element is going straight into a separate checking account that can ONLY be used for Outreach and benevolence.  We are on pace to give way more than 10% but we want to practice the tithing principle that we challenge people to do in their own life.  Therefore, 10% will be set aside weekly.

— Adam was on vacation today in Kansas.  Missed him up there leading worship.

— Katie did a GREAT job leading today and the band was right on.  Thanks Katie for leading and to the band for filling in GREAT!

— Sang Revelation Song by Gateway Worship today.  Fast becoming one of my favorites.  GREAT song.

— STOKED about XXXposed, our September series is going to be VERY challenging, and then Be The Church Day coming up on September 20th.

— If you’re interested in serving at Be The Church Day you need to sign up at Element on Sunday or at the office through the week.

— That’s it.  Time to rest up.

Following Christ,

Jeff

Sometimes to go up…

24 07 2009

IMG00850…you have to go down.  Sure seems like that is true in life a lot doesn’t it?  Today we took the fam out to Vedauwoo (prounounced vedavoo) and had a picnic, climbed rocks and went hiking.  It was a blast to be out in God’s creation with Sab and all the kids.  Jonah, who is ALL boy, LOVED climbing the rocks, exploring the crevices and seeing how high he could go.  I let him loose to lead the way.  At one point he wanted to go higher and “thought” he had found a way.  He was DETERMINED to get higher, and was frustrated that his way wasn’t quite passable for an 8 year old.  What he didn’t realize that if he would have just gone DOWN a little bit, there was a better way to get higher.  It reminded me of the Israelites and their passage to the Promise Land.

Exodus 13:17-18 says “17 When Pharaoh finally let the people go, God did not lead them along the main road that runs through Philistine territory, even though that was the shortest route to the Promised Land.  God said, “If the people are faced with a battle, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.” 18 So God led them in a roundabout way through the wilderness toward the Red Sea. Thus the Israelites left Egypt like an army ready for battle.

Now the Bible doesn’t record this, but I’m SURE someone realized this was NOT the shortest way.  I’m sure someone was frustrated, complained and even pointed this out to Moses.  What they didn’t realize was that this was a BETTER IMG00845way.  It was sparing them MORE danger than was necessary.  Difficult battles.  Loss, pain, even tragedy.

Often in my life, I wonder why it seems God is taking me DOWN instead of up.  “Why are we not moving forward?”  I ask.  Cause sometimes to go up…you have to go down.

What are you going through in your life that seems as if God is taking you backwards?  Making you go down?  Keeping you from the direction YOU think you should go?  Remember, the way He has you on IS the BEST way.  It may not be the shortest, or even the most visible, but it IS the BEST!

Following Christ,

Jeff

Seeking…

21 07 2009

As you know, if you’re an Elementer, we are finishing off some space next to our welcome center into a coffee shop called The Well.  The Well is going to GREATLY increase ministry space for our youth ministry, AND, provide much needed relief of traffic flow and fellowship space on Sunday mornings in betwen services.  The Well is going to be a full service coffee shop and we really see it being a benefit to expanding our impact of our personal ministries, but also utilizing proceeds to increase our impact in the community and to community organizations.

In order to be full service, we needed a water line into that area.  Well, there isn’t one.  There were a couple options of tapping in to water at our bathrooms and running water up into the ceiling, all the way over, down the wall, and to The Well.  That was going to be super labor intensive and expensive.  We do have an Elementer who is a plumber that is helping us with the project, but even so, it was going to be a HUGE deal.

Well, we have some next door neighbors in our facility that we knew had water just on the other side of the wall.  We thought and prayed over what to do with the water situation.  We eventually said, “We know we want and feel like we should do a full service coffee shop.  To do that we need water.  What if we asked our neighbors if we could just tap into their water?  What’s the worst they could say?  ‘No!’”  We didn’t know how it could work, figuring out how much water we used and they used would be impossible.  BUT, we thought we should at least ask.

Yesterday, the General walks over and pops the big question.  All we had to offer them was free coffee and soda from The Well.  Their response?  “You can definitely tap into our water.  That’s not an issue at all.”  AND “Use as MUCH WATER AS YOU NEED!”  WHAT?  Talk about a GOD thing.  I was reminded of this Scripture.

Matthew 6:31-33  31 “So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ 32 These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. 33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

I wanna be found seeking.  If we continue to seek, our Heavenly Father who already knows ALL our needs will give us EVERYTHING we need.

Seeking,

Jeff

If you aren’t following Pastor Derek and e:kidz you need to.  They are doing FANTASTIC stuff with the kids of Element Church.  They are a living model of being the hands and feet of Jesus.  GREAT job D.  Keep up the good work.  Check out his blog HERE.

Why?

20 07 2009

Why do we do what we do at Element Church?  I’m going to share a story with you that answers that question.  Last week I received an email from one of our head ushers and leadership council members, named Keith.  (Keith regularly ministers  at the Jeffrey C. Wardle Academy (JCWA).  The JCWA is designed to provide detention services to teens as well as substance abuse treatment.)  The story happened on Sunday, July 12th, and includes both Keith and a young man from our church named Lance.  Lance got saved at Element on March 1st of 2009, and hasn’t looked back since.  He was one of our 35 people who got baptized yesterday.  I got permission from both Keith and Lance to share this story and here is the email I got from Keith:

As I was enjoying worship today, I looked over and saw Lance praising God.  Right then, God said, “Hey Keith!  Take Lance with you out to JCWA and have him share his testimony.”  I didn’t really know his story, but I do know that when God speaks you better listen.  So I asked him to come along.  He was a little bewildered and nervous about it, but he agreed.

As we were checking in to the center, Lance got to the portion that asked if he’d ever been arrested and asked me what to put.  I said put down the truth (not knowing what the truth was).   When we got inside, we did the usual greeting…get to know you stuff with the 8 guys there.  I then introduced Lance, and he shared his story.  WOW!  I had no idea what he had been through, and how God changed his life so dramatically!  I also didn’t realize how much it fit the background of these kids!  When he was done, I asked if anyone wanted to receive Christ, and four guys did!  How awesome is that?!  God using this new believer, who is growing in Christ, to minister and reach kids that I, or any other chaplain out there couldn’t reach.  It is so awesome when God does HIS amazing work, and so cool to see how He is growing in Lance’s life.”

Friends…THAT is why!

If only for the one…

Jeff
