One Prayer Day 23: Offender

23 06 2009

Matthew 23:  God is an OFFENDER

Jesus wast NOT afraid of who He might offend.  ESPECIALLY when it came to the religious elite and piousness of the “righteouse in my own eyes” people of His day.  Jesus spoke TRUTH but He spoke the Truth in love.  His love, often produced anger AT the “blind guides” and “whitewashed tombs” but it was still an anger and offense driven from love.

Here in verse 23 Jesus uses some VERY offenseive language to the Pharisees to expose them as who they were.  “Blind guides”  “Blind fools”  “Hypocrites”  “Snakes”  “Sons of vipers” (which by the way, what other character in the Bible is a snake?  Oh yeah, the devil.  Think this was offenseive?)

I LOVED what Pastor Curtis had to say in his blog a few days ago, and I think it fits well here.  God is an OFFENDER.  But how do we handle that in our own lives?  I’ve spent about half of my time as a Christian with no qualms about offending anyone. I wore the term “Jesus freak” with pride and my zeal knew no bounds. I justified my offending of others by claiming that as long as I was speaking truth, I was in the right. I felt like if I suffered for the sake of Christ, I was doing my duty and I was storing up treasures in heaven.

The other half of my Christian-life has been spent loving my neighbor as the 2nd greatest commandment tells us to do. I’ve made non-Christian friends, dined with “tax collectors and sinners”, and taken up the cause of the poor and downtrodden. I felt like I had seen and heard enough hell, fire, and brimstone to last a lifetime; and I didn’t want to be grouped with the intolerant, closed-minded crowd.

Offending people is a delicate issue, and both of the stances I’ve taken in my life have BIBLICAL merit. But as we look at the life and teachings of Jesus, I made an interesting discovery: He did BOTH! He unashamedly offended people with the gospel, while offering life instead of condemnation to those that needed it.

We have got to be more deliberate in how we handle this topic! It is one of the primary ways that non-Christians judge us. “But the Bible talks about judging”… non-Christians don’t know that!

There is a MAJOR difference between offending someone unnecessarily out of ignorance and offending them intentionally out of love! We need to do BOTH… the health of our ministries depends on it!

Am I offending anyone out of ignorance or unrighteous anger?  Is God “offending” me with something that I need to repent of and change?  Where do I need to offer some grace and salt instead of offense?  Where do I need to offer offense in truth instead of tolerance?

Offended,

Jeff

One Prayer Day 22: Simple

22 06 2009

Matthew 22:  God is SIMPLE

Since the theme is simple, I probably shouldn’t talk too much today huh?  I LOVE the simplicity in which Christ makes things.  I’ve talked about how CLEAR God is and how He draws a line in the sand demanding one of two ways.  It isn’t difficult to follow Christ. Here in Matthew 22, Jesus does it again.  Revealing God is SIMPLE.

Matthew 22:34-40 34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees with his reply, they met together to question him again. 35 One of them, an expert in religious law, tried to trap him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?” 37 Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’[e] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[f] 40 The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”

We’re kind of the same way aren’t we?  We want to know “What is the most important thing I should do.”  Jesus just simplifies everything.  He doesn’t point out ANY of the 10 commandments or other Old Testament laws.  He just simply says “Love God with ALL your heart, sould, mind (and strength).  And love your neighbor as yourself.”  EVERYTHING is kept if you keep these two commands.  Jesus simplifies ALL the law into TWO commands.  God is SIMPLE.

What areas of my life am I making too difficult when Jesus is trying to make it simple?  Where am I not loving God with my ALL or my neighbor as myself?  Am I making following Christ MORE than what it has to be for someone I’m trying to win to Him?

Following Christ,

Jeff

Sunday Rumination (6-21-09)

21 06 2009

Happy Father’s Day to all you dad’s out there.  Hope you had a blessed day if you’re a dad.  Here are my ruminations on the day.

— Today is my 12th wedding anniversary.  I have the GREATEST wife on the planet and wouldn’t trade any of our years together for anything.  I love you babe and can’t wait for the next 12 and beyond!

— GREAT spirit in the services today.  Good response to the worship and the Word.

— In first service we had a moment.  The Spirit of God was VERY heavy and evident in the place.  It was one of those moments that you cannot create or plan for, it just happens when God falls on a service.

— The response during worship in first service was amazing!

— Adam and the band absolutely NAILED it today.  Knocked it out of the park.  They helped usher us into the presence of God and led the way with passionate worship.

— The song selection today set up the message perfectly.  The medley of Overcome, Same Power, and I Am Free totally paved the way for the Word to be spoken.

— When you get a chance, make sure and thank the worship team for the amount of time and effort they put into leading us in worship.  Not only do they give a TON of time, but they are excellent at what they do.  A bunch of the worship team gets to head to Colorado Springs tonight for the Enter Worship Conference.  Be praying for them as they go.

— 1st and 2nd service attendance was solid today.  3rd service was pretty slim.

— I told a POSITVE John Elway/Denver Bronco story today.  Enjoy it Bronco fans cause it may not happen again.

—  Continued One Prayer today.  Spoke on God is VICTORIOUS!

— If God is victorious, and He lives in me, what does that make me?  VICTORIOUS!

— John says “Who is it that overcomes the world?  Only he who believes that Jesus is the Chrst!”  Why aren’t more people living in victory?

—  “We need to stop viewing our spiritual lives with the attitude of impossiblity, and start remembering it is God who gives us the victory.”

— Announced our next sermon series today via a video promo.  Untouchables begins July 12.  I’ll post a video later this week you can use to invite your friends.

— This year we are taking aim at the church.  Tackling 3 issues the church needs to hear about.  Integrity/Character, Money, Gossip.

— Announced our first ever Element Tailgate and Baptism party.  On Sunday, July 19th following our third service, Element will be providing a BBQ lunch for everyone who wants to come and celebrate with people as they “go public” with their faith through baptism.  We’re gonna hang out in the parking lot, worship together and watch as a bunch of people make their public confession of faith.  We already have 17 people who signed up for Baptism.  There will be a BUNCH more.  Plan on being there.  It is going to be a BLAST.

— Sunday, July 5th we are having church in the park.  One service at 10 AM.  No childcare is provided but ALL families and ages are encouraged to attend.  We’ll be meeting at the Lyons Park amphitheater.  It will be a great time of worship and a message from the Word.

— If you haven’t turned in your baby bottles for Life Choice yet, please get those to the office this week.  We have received a TON of money filled bottles so far.  Thank you for all who supported this effort.

—  That’s about it.  Hope you all have an AWESOME week!  Remember…God is VICTORIOUS!

Following Christ,

Jeff

One Prayer Day 21: Clear

21 06 2009

Matthew 21:  God is CLEAR

To quote a scene from the movie A Few Good Men:

Jessep: We follow orders, son. We follow orders or people die. It’s that simple. Are we clear?

Kaffee: Yes sir. Jessep: Are we clear? Kaffee: Crystal.

God is CLEAR.  There is no wondering what He wants from us.  Is God clear?  CRYSTAL

Matthew 21:28-32 says

28 “But what do you think about this? A man with two sons told the older boy, ‘Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.’ 29 The son answered, ‘No, I won’t go,’ but later he changed his mind and went anyway. 30 Then the father told the other son, ‘You go,’ and he said, ‘Yes, sir, I will.’ But he didn’t go. 31 “Which of the two obeyed his father?” They replied, “The first.” Then Jesus explained his meaning: “I tell you the truth, corrupt tax collectors and prostitutes will get into the Kingdom of God before you do. 32 For John the Baptist came and showed you the right way to live, but you didn’t believe him, while tax collectors and prostitutes did. And even when you saw this happening, you refused to believe him and repent of your sins.

What is it Jesus wants?  FOLLOW THROUGH.  It is not about WORDS it is about ACTION.  Jesus made a very clear distinction here between the person who SAYS the right thing and the person who DOES the right thing.  I can SAY I’m going to follow Christ, but doesn’t FOLLOWING Him show me as a follower? God is CLEAR.

Now, I don’t think Jesus is saying that He wants us to say “I’m not going to follow You.”  And then we do.  Obviously He desires both.  BUT, He was exposing the pharisaical attitude here of KNOWING the right answers but NOT knowing HIM.  He didn’t say “John the Baptist showed you the right things to SAY…or the right things to KNOW… but the right way to LIVE.”  Sadly though, too many people live life trusting in what they SAY and KNOW all the while never going out to the vineyard to work for the WHO.  God is CLEAR.

What is God being clear about that you are ignoring?  Is there anything you’ve said “Yes” to and have yet to follow through?

Following Christ,

Jeff

The Call: Final Post

20 06 2009

Check out my latest post HERE with links to the other posts in the series.  I’ve loved doing this series, reflecting on what I’ve learned about the Call…specifically things I’ve learned from my dad.  In honor of Father’s Day, I’ve dedicated this series to Him.

#5  The Call is UNBELIEVABLE

I’ve said some pretty strong and seemingly negative things about the Call this week.  I want to be VERY clear.   Following the Call of God  is UNBELIEVABLE! I don’t know another word to describe it.  I cannot imaging doing ANYTHING else.  NOTHING for me could replace what I’m doing now.  NOTHING!

You know what I saw and still see in my dad?  UNBELIEVABLE joy.  Seeing people saved from sin.  Seeing believers surrender there all to the power of the Holy Spirit.  Seeing addictions broken.  Families restored.  Prodigals come home.  Marriages healed.  It’s is unbelievable.  The move and work of God NEVER ceases to amaze me and I KNOW it is what fueled my dad.  He preached it, lived it and saw it happen in peoples lives.  LIFE CHANGE brings joy from the call.

UNBELIEVABLE friendships.  The closest friends my dad has are from following the Call.  A brotherhood was born out of following the Call.  There are men in my dad’s life from DECADES ago that still mean the world to him.  There will be an AMAZING reunion in Heaven one day of  the friendships, once again being reunited, all born out of the Call.  I don’t take for granted in my life the relationships the Call has given me, because of what they’ve given my dad.

UNBELIEVABLE peace.  The center of God’s will is not always the safest place to be, but it’s always the BEST!  If my dad didn’t have peace he hid it well.  As a little boy, a young man, and a grown adult, it sure seems he’s had peace in the midst of chaos at times.  I think it is due in some part to KNOWING he was following the Call.  In the CENTER of God’s will.

UNBELIEVABLE God.  God was real to my dad.  My dad believed in what God could do.  He believed in an UNBELIEVABLE God.  He knew that SOMEHOW God would work it all out, regardless of what He was asking our family to do or where He was asking us to go.

Dad, I can truly say that as one of your three children, we are able to follow you as you follow Christ.  I hope my children can say the same some day.  Your example to us of what it means to follow the Call of God, I believe, will span generations to come.  I love you.  Happy Father’s Day.

Following dad as he follows Christ,

Jeff

One Prayer Day 20: Exemplar

20 06 2009

Matthew 20: Exemplar

Hebrews 1:3 says that Jesus is the exact representation of who God is.  In that case What does Jesus show?  Here in Matthew 20 I am reminded that Jesus is OUR exampler.  He is an EXEMPLAR.  He is our model.  Our lead.  Our goal.  What HE did we should also strive to do.  Jesus calls the disciples on this issue here in Matthew 20.

Matthew 20:28 says 28 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

The disciples were disputing over who would get seats of honor in Jesus’ Kingdom.  James and John’s mom actually asked Jesus for her boys if they could have those seats.  One on His right and the other on His left.  The other disciples heard the question and were furious.  SO, Jesus took the opportunity to be an EXEMPLAR.

“I’m not even here for honor.  Why are YOU?”  “THIS life of mine is not about seats on the right or left, IT IS ABOUT SERVING!”  “If you want to be great in My Kingdom, then become the least”.

Over and over again in Jesus’ ministry we see Him as an EXEMPLAR.

What is Jesus challenging YOU with that He lead the way on?  What areas of your life have you ignored Jesus’ example?  Where do you need to become least in or order to serve God’s Kingdom?

Following Christ,

Jeff

The Call: Part 5

19 06 2009

Check the 4th post in this 6 part series HERE.  It will give you a link to the other posts if you like. The final post will be up tomorrow.  We’ve been looking at what it means to be Called.  Not HOW you get called, I’m not sure I can explain that one.  I’ve been sharing from my heart some things about the Call, ESPECIALLY some things I’ve seen in my dad over the years as he pursued the Call of God on his life.

#4 The call is TOUGH. One of the things I’ve learned about the Call, whether in full time pastoral ministry or ANY Call from God to do whatever…it is TOUGH.  Specifically with full time ministry, when someone comes to me and says “I feel called”, one of the first things I tell them is “I’m going to try and talk you out of it.”  Your reaction right now is probably similar to what they give me, “Why would you do that?”  FIRST, because it’s tougher than you EVER imagined.  SECOND, because if I can talk you out of it, then you aren’t really called.

I don’t think I realized it until I was in ministy, but now looking back I can see how tough it was on my dad. I remember one time in high school coming home (probably late) from a night with Sabrina.  It was definitely past my dad’s normal bed time but as I pulled up, I saw him sitting on the porch.  I thought “Uh oh, I’m in for it now.”  But as I walked up to him I could tell he wasn’t there for a conversation with me.  I didn’t know this then, but later I found out that he was out on the porch having a conversation with God.  God was stirring his heart with a new call for a new church.  He couldn’t sleep.  I know it was one night of MANY that ministry kept him awake.

I remember demanding people in my dads life.  I remember critical people.  I remember beginning to understand how closely watched our family was because “We were called”.  I remember the long nights or the early mornings where I’d see my dad by the fireplace praying or reading his Bible.  There are probably too many times to count that my dad and mom had conversations I never knew about, in which they discussed how TOUGH the Call was.  BUT he never stopped chasing that call.  He’s still chasing it today.

I’ve come to learn that ministry isn’t glamorous.  It’s tough.  I think for some people going in they don’t realize the level of hurt they will endure or work it will take.  The sleepless nights.  The tragic phone calls.  The gut wrenching conversations.  Seeing people NOT make it spiritually is THE most difficult thing for a pastor to see.  The spiritual responsibility that a pastor carries is overwhelming at times.

I know, maybe I’m not painting a pretty enough picture.  Why do I say all those things?  Because every time I go through a tough time in ministry, I’m reminded that if my dad is still in it, I can be too.  The call is tough, but if you’re called, what else are you going to do?  Run?  The TOUGH parts of the call, at least for me, are FAR better to endure than the anguish in my heart of NOT following it!  If you are Called, DON’T STOP!

Toughing it,

Jeff

One Prayer Day 19: Demanding

19 06 2009

Matthew 19:  God is DEMANDING

Not in a negative way…  like a whiney girlfriend kind of way.  Not like that.  But He IS demanding. You can’t read Matthew 19 and not see that.

In Matthew 19:16-30, Jesus and a rich man have an in depth conversation.  Basically a rich man comes to Jesus and says “What must I do to be saved?”  A conversation ensues where Jesus and the man talk about some commandments and the man says “I’ve kept ALL those.  What else do I lack?”  Jesus’ response?

Matthew 19:21-22 21 Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 22 But when the young man heard this, he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

DEMANDING huh?  Why does Jesus say this?  I don’t think Jesus was establishing  any kind of works based salvation.  I DO think He WAS exposing this mans heart and motives, and I think it exposes many of ours as well.

Jesus is basically saying, “If you really want to follow me, IT WILL COST YOU EVERYTHING!”  The cost is GREAT to following me.  Don’t forget in chapter 16:24 he says “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me.” God is DEMANDING!

Jesus made it very clear UP FRONT what it cost to follow Him.  When Jesus healed a lame man in John 5 He tells him “Stop sinning or something worse will happen to you.”  The adulterous woman in John 8 He tells “Go and sin no more”.  God is DEMANDING!  To the disciples when He called them (while they were fishing) “Follow me” and they dropped their nets and left their family (everything) to follow Him.  In Matthew 10 “If you love ANYONE more than Me you are not worthy of being my follower.”  God is DEMANDING!

How often do we talk the cost of following Jesus?  We LOVE to talk about the rewards.  Heaven.  Crowns.  Eternal Life.  Those are great things, but they come with a cost.  EVERYTHING!  Don’t forget…God is DEMANDING.

Counting the cost,

Jeff

The Call: Part 4

18 06 2009

Check out the latest post in this series HERE and you can find links to the other ones as well.

#4:  The call isn’t always logical

In life you can usually make decisions based off logic.  In the Call, things aren’t always logical.  In fact sometimes they are downright crazy.  But when you are Called, you do it based off TRUST!  God wouldn’t ask me to do “this” without knowing what to do next.

It wasn’t logical for my dad to move from an established church to a small start up church in Wyoming that had just lost its founding pastor…but God CALLED so he did.

It wasn’t logical for my dad to give an entire paycheck each month back to that small church… but God CALLED so he did.

It wasn’t logical for my dad to leave that now healthy church to become an itinerant evangelist…but God CALLED so he did.

It wasn’t logical for my dad to leave a church that loved him in Oklahoma to a church that was struggling in Missouri…but God CALLED so he did.

It wasn’t logical for my dad to leave the music ministry at a large church with the largest salary he’d ever had, to a MUCH smaller church and salary…But God called so he did.

The Call isn’t always logical.  My parents gave money, moved their family, dedicated their time, OFTEN defying logic to follow the call of God.  Sometimes God will ask you to do things that are just downright NOT logical.  It’s ALWAYS in those times that God proves to be MOST faithful.  When logic goes out the window, the HOLY SPIRIT comes roaring in.  I’m not saying you should look for illogical things to do.  But I’m saying that JUST because it isn’t logical, doesn’t mean God won’t ask you to do it!

“God is not here to provide for us creature comforts, but to put us where we will do Him the most good.”

Illogical,

Jeff

One Prayer Day 18: Seeker

18 06 2009

Matthew 18:  God is a SEEKER

These verses should comfort AND challenge us.

Matthew 18:12-14 “If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them wanders away, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others on the hills and go out to search for the one that is lost? 13 And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, he will rejoice over it more than over the ninety-nine that didn’t wander away! 14 In the same way, it is not my heavenly Father’s will that even one of these little ones should perish.

Here are a couple things that should comfort us.

#1  He came after me! We should thank God EVERYDAY that He sought us out.  That he left the fold and searched for us to win US to HIM.  Everyday we need to be reminded that WE left Him and didn’t deserve to be a part of the fold.  We earned death but HE gave life.  God is a SEEKER.

#2  He goes after others! Have a friend who is lost?  A family member who has wandered away?  A son, daughter, husband, wife that doesn’t belong to the fold?  He is a SEEKER of them too.  Just as He sought and found you, He is doing the same for them.  DON’T GIVE UP!  Keep praying.  Keep sharing.  Keep loving. God is a SEEKER.

Challenge?

#1  If HE goes after the lost…shouldn’t we? Why in the world, if THE Shepherd goes out in search of the lost wouldn’t THAT be our greatest desire as the church?  The MINUTE our churches become about the 99 MORE than about the one WE DON’T HAVE THE FATHERS HEART!  He is a SEEKER!  How are my prayers directed personally?  How are our programs directed corporately?  “If only for the one.”  This is the heartbeat of Christ.  Jesus said in  Luke 19:10  “I came to seek and to save those who are lost.” Luke 5:31-32 says “It is not the healthy that need a doctor, but sick people.  I came to call, not those who THINK they are righteous, but those who KNOW they are sinners and need to repent.”

#2  Don’t take pride in being part of the 99. You’re only there because the Shepherd LET’S you be there.  Too often I think we get all puffed up spiritually thinking “Look at me.  I’m not wandering.  I’ve served Jesus for all these years.  I’m in the fold.  I’m part of the flock.  I bet Jesus is SO proud of me.”  Notice, it doesn’t say that God doesn’t rejoice at ALL over the 99, just that He rejoices MORE for the lost that was found.  Listen, you’re only as deep as the last person you served.  If you’re part of the 99, GET OUT of the pen and start helping look for the lost and serving those around you.  If all you do is  just sit in the sheep stall, you’re going to end up fat, stinky and useless.  GET OUT AND DO SOMETHING!

Challenged…and comforted,

Jeff
