Pruning

13 06 2009

So I’m outside mowing the yard today and I get frustrated (not for the first time) with 2 specific areas of my yard that aren’t growing.  We have an in ground sprinkler system and there is no reason why the grass shouldn’t grow in these two areas.  I finish mowing and run the sprinklers for that zone to see why this might be happening.  What I saw I never would have realized.  As the sprinklers were running I noticed that two of our trees, specifically the branches that had grown to many “extensions”, were blocking the sprinklers from reaching all the grass.  I walked to my shed, grabbed my pruning shears and went to work.  I removed every branch that was in the way from the water reaching where it needed to go.  Test run #2 SUCCESS!

As I was working I thought of the verse in John 15 which says “He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more.”

Now I know this verse is speaking more on a personal level, but it got me thinking of something deeper.  Those trees are a GREAT addition to our yard.  They aren’t “bad” trees, BUT, they needed to be pruned for the greater good of the yard as a WHOLE.  How many times does God need to prune us, not just for US, but for the greater good of the Kingdom?  Sometimes pruning needs to be done so that the KINGDOM can advance, not just to better my personal spiritual life.

When God begins to prune, don’t take it personally.  It is a GOOD thing for God to prune our lives.  It enables us to be even MORE fruitful.  And perhaps, maybe someone else will be able to receive water better after you’ve been pruned.  God sees the BIG picture.  He sees parts of the yard that need pruned and others that need water.  Where are you?

Being Pruned,

Jeff

One Prayer Day 13: Spreader

Matthew 13:  God is a SPREADER

“It doesn’t take much.” Could be a theme for most of this passage.

Vs. 1-23 is the parable of the soils (farmer scattering seed).  The soil that was ready to receive and willing to produce, by simply putting their faith in Christ, produced a crop 30, 60 even 100 times as much as had been given.  Did they receive the same seed as the other soil?  YES!  The difference?  They were ready to receive and willing to produce.  It doesn’t take much.

Vs. 24-29 is the parable of the wheat and the weeds.  Here we see our enemy, the devil, planting a few weeds in the wheat field.  Before long the wheat was growing, but so were the weeds right among them.  It doesn’t take much.  Pastors, if you think there aren’t any weeds in your congregation trying to destroy the wheat, you better think again.  Churches, if you think there aren’t weeds planted in your community wanting to destroy the Kingdom work, you better think again.  It doesn’t take much!  BE ON YOUR GUARD!  (Also notice though the patience of God.  He doesn’t uproot the weeds so as not to injur the wheat.  Be careful how you handle the weeds.)

Vs. 31-32 The smallest of seeds becomes the largest of garden plants.  The Kingdom of God is like this He says.  It doesn’t take much.

Then the verse I want to focus on.  Matthew 13:33  33 Jesus also used this illustration: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like the yeast a woman used in making bread. Even though she put only a little yeast in three measures of flour, it permeated every part of the dough.”

It doesn’t take much! Listen, if YOU believe in Jesus then YOU are a part of the Kingdom of Heaven.  I think sometimes we look at ALL that needs to be changed around us.  The sin and wickedness in our cities.  The family and friends that don’t know Jesus.  The poor and hungry that need to be taken care of.  I know when I look at ALL the Kingdom needs to “permeate” it seems SO DAUNTING.  But even a little yeast begins working through EVERY PART of the dough.

It doesn’t take much!  Why?  Because God is a SPREADER.  He is ALWAYS casting seed.  He is waiting for the good soil to hear, receive and produce a crop 30, 60 even 100 times as much as was given.  He is planting the smallest of seeds seeing the largest of plants produced.  He places YOU with just a little part of the Kingdom of Heaven and HE begins to permeate every part of the dough.  It doesn’t take much.

God is a SPREADER!  He is always looking to advance and SPREAD the Kingdom of God in the hearts of men and women and the cities in which they live. And it doesn’t take much!

Following Christ,

Jeff
