One Prayer Day 6: Provider

6 06 2009

Welcome to One Prayer Day 6.  You can get a prayer Calendar HERE if you don’t have one.  Today’s theme?  God is…Just.  Please pray for the churches listed on the calendar and for God’s Justice to be revealed.  (That’s a tough one to pray for.  We don’t want God’s justice.  We only want His grace and mercy)

Matthew 6:

How do you pick one thing out of the Sermon on the Mount to discuss?  Such GREAT teaching Jesus gives us on life through these chapters here.  But I want to talk about one aspect of God in which I think we often miss a key point.  God is our PROVIDER!  Jehova Jireh (The Lord Wll Povide)

The last part of Matthew 6:33 says “and he will give you everything you need.”

We LOVE that verse don’t we?  God is our PROVIDER.  He’ll give us EVERYTHING we need.  We celebrate the provision of God and look for the bounty of God.  But I think we miss the point of the passage.  YES, Jesus wants us to know that God is our Provider.  YES, we should take comfort in the fact that God knows our need and can provide our need.  YES, we should celebrate the provision of God.  BUT, I think so often there are times we don’t have enough, or someone feels like they DON’T get what they need and we blame God.  What is the point of this passage?  Look at these excerpts.

v. 19 “Don’t store up treasures here on earth”

v. 20 “Store your treasures in Heaven”

V. 24 “No one can serve two masters…You can’t serve both God and money”

v. 25 “Do not worry about everyday life”  What you will eat, drink or wear.

V. 31 “So don’t worry about these things…”

Then Jesus says these words “Seek the Kingdom of God above ALL ELSE, AND live rightesously, and He will give you everything you need.”

See the point?  God IS our Provider.  He DOES know what we need, and He WILL give us what we need.  But we have a part to.  SEEK HIM FIRST!  We cannot count on God to provide what we need if we are not willing to seek Him first.  We seek Him with our treasures.  Our money.  Our worries.  Our everyday needs!  EVERYTHING!  Everyday life should be given over COMPLETELY to the Provider. When I give EVERYTHING over to the Provider, I no longer have to worry, for HE cares for my every need.

What areas of your life need to be given to the Provider?  What treasures are keeping me from fully experiencing ALL that the Provider has for me?

Trying to seek,

Jeff
