Acting Like Acts…Pt. 2

20 05 2009

“We want an Acts type church.”  First off, I never know what that really means.  Second, I’m not sure people really know what they are asking for when they ask for an Acts type church.  What people generally want, in my opinion, is the RESULTS of the Acts church.  I’m not sure they are willing to BE the Acts church (me included at times).  Here is the second thing I’m noticing in Acts.

If you don’t want opposition…don’t preach the Gospel. Acts 4:1 says “While Peter and John were speaking to the people, they were confronted by the priests, the captian of the Temple guard, and some of the Sadducees.  These leaders were very disturbed that Peter and John were teaching the people that through Jesus there is a resurrection of the dead.”  The disciples didn’t pull any punches.  They weren’t just preaching Jesus, they were preaching the FULL Gospel.  REPENT – which literally means to turn from the way you are living and live for Christ!  FILLED – They were teaching the filling of the Holy Spirit which empowers us to live the new life.  JESUS – as THE ONLY WAY to Heaven.  SACRIFICE – That the cost of being a follower of Jesus is EVERYTHING and nothing less.  DEVOTION – SERVING – GIVING – etc.  The Gospel demands 100% of us and nothing less.

If you want to BE the Acts church you MUST preach these things.  And the result?  Some leaders will be VERY disturbed.  The human heart, in it’s sinfulness, DOES NOT like the Gospel.  If you preach the Gospel YOU WILL BE OPPOSED.  Sadly, you may be opposed by “spiritual” leaders in your own church or community.  The ones who were the angriest at the disciples were the religious leader and elite of the day!  If you preach Jesus as the only way, you WILL be opposed.  If you preach that without repentance there is no salvation you WILL be opposed.  If you preach the power of the Holy Spirit filling the heart of the believer you WILL be opposed.  If you preach Sacrifice, deovtion, serving and giving YOU WILL BE OPPOSED.  If you don’t want to be opposed…don’t preach the Gospel.

BUT…BUT…But if you want to see a harvest of lives TRANSFORMED by the power of God then DON’T LET OPPOSITION hold you back.  Peter preached repentance and on ONE DAY thousands were added to the church.  People were healed.  Sinners were transformed.  And when the opposition said “Stop or we’ll kill you.”  Peter’s reply?  “We cannot help but speak about what we have seen or heard.”  I think too many pastors/churches are afraid to preach the Gospel for fear of opposition.  The Gospel effects EVERY area of our life.  Money, sex, relationships, marriage, work, family, leisure, EVERYTHING.  But so often the Gospel is left out of those areas of our lives and our preaching.

Leonard Ravenhill said “If Jesus preached the same message some minister’s preach today, He would have never been crucified.”  OUCH!  I hope there is ALWAYS opposition to what we preach, it just might be a sign that we’re preaching something good!

Trying to preach the Gospel,

Jeff

Acting like Acts: Part 1

19 05 2009

I’m reading Acts in my devotions right now.  Side note:  Isn’t it AWESOME how you can read something 5, 10, 15, 50 times and yet you come back to it and AGAIN you learn something new.  That’s how I’m feeling with Acts right now.  As I’m reading through it, I’m thinking, “MAN, there is still so much the church needs to learn from this book.”  People always say “We want an Acts type church.”  Most people who say that, have NO CLUE what they are asking for.  I want to address a few things I’ve seen in Acts about the local church.  We say we LONG for the Acts church, but I don’t know if we realize what that means.

If you don’t want problems…don’t grow! We read Acts and we think “I wish our church would see 3,000 people added in one day!”  “I wish our church would see the kind of rapid multiplication of believers and churches like Acts did.”  “I wish we were as big as ‘church name here’!”

Acts 6:1 says “But as the believers rapidly multiplied, there were rumblings of discontent!” You mean, the Acts church deal with that too?  HA Pastor…attender…member…listen to me…BIGGER DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN BETTER!  I know so many people who just think that if the church would grow it would solve everything.  That somehow complaints, discontent, misunderstanding, and people who are downright hurtful don’t exist in larger churches.  Exist?  I’m not gonna go there.

NOW, I’m not saying we shouldn’t desire for our churches to grow.  Our NUMBER ONE desire for our churches should be to GROW through NEW CONVERTS!  But you better expect, that when you grow, it only brings on MORE problems.  Are you ready for that?  If you are having trouble dealing with the issues you already have…don’t grow.  If you are burnt out dealing with people who are discontent with what you do…don’t grow.  If you don’t like hearing complaints about how you preach…what you sing…the volume of the music…the decorations…the decisions…then don’t grow.  Because that only grows with you.

I heard Ed Stetzer say this at a recent conference we attended and I think it is so true:  “Most of you will not experience ministries like you’ve seen here today, and if you do, it will hurt more than you thought and you’ll struggle more than you ever imagined.”  BUT…BUT…don’t let that stop you from ADVANCING THE KINGDOM OF GOD.  The disciples didn’t, and WE’LL never be the same because of it!  Bring on the problems if it means MORE PEOPLE know Jesus!

Growing,

Jeff

He Dove In

18 05 2009

IMG00573Here is a picture from my prayer journal.  A circled number means God answered that prayer in the way in which I asked.  I put an “x” through prayer requests in which God answers but not in the way in which I requested.  (By the way, that is still an answer!!)  On April 16 of 2008 I began praying for the salvation of a man who attends Element Church.  This guy was a GREAT guy through this whole process.  One of the most honest men I’ve met when it comes to his spiritual condition.  He admitted he was NOT a Christian.  He just had lots of questions.  LOTS of questions.  You could use the word skeptic.  I haven’t stopped praying for his salvation since April 16 of last year.  Over the course of the year I’ve had numerous conversations answering his questions as best I could.  I’d tell him, “Eventually you just have to dive in.”  Time would go on, he kept attending, even serving, and I’d answer more questions.  “How many questions will I have to answer?” I’d ask him.  “Eventually you just have to dive in.”  Following first service he walked up to me and we started talking about questions and concerns he had.  Again I said “Eventually you just have to dine in.”  He said “I did.”  I said “WHEN?  Recently?”  His reply….”Just now!”  WOW!  Total God moment.  Praise God.  I didn’t ask permission to share the story so didn’t include all the details or his name, but you know who you are and CONGRATULATIONS!  Heaven threw a big party for you yesterday!

Celebrating with Heaven,

Jeff

Pastor Kody Update

18 05 2009

Hey Element Church!  I just talked with Pastor Kody and wanted to give you an update on their move and situation so you can be praying with and for them.  They were unable to find housing that suited their families needs when they were up here recently.  Their original intention was to move the whole family up on May 23rd.  That has  now changed.  Kody will be moving up by himself on Tuesday, May 26th and be living in a temporary place for a few weeks while he looks for housing for his family.  Julie will be bringing the kids up on June 15th.  At this point, the Bybees are going to be looking to rent for a year or so while their house in Oklahoma sells and they look for a place to purchase.  Please be praying for God’s hand of direction for the Bybee family.  Kody and Julie are both confident that God will provide.  God was very clear that this was the direction we both should go and so we know He is not blind to their need at this time.  We know that God is never late but always on time, and He will be with this as well.  Thanks Elementers for lifting up your new pastoral family.

Praying,

Jeff

Sunday Ruminations (5-17-09)

17 05 2009

It’s 7:00 PM and I just got home for the first time today.  Been a FULL day and I’m exhausted.  Ready to veg out and watch some Survivor.  Here are my Ruminations on the day.

— 14 people were BORN AGAIN today!  PRAISE GOD!

— I spoke clearly in today’s message about KNOWING JESUS and Him Knowing me.  That happens through being born again.  Jesus said in John 3:3 “Unless you are born again” you cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

— Actually had one couple respond on their connection card “We were born again today!”  It was awesome.

— Had some VERY cool conversations with those who got saved.  One man I’ve become friends with and have been praying for for a year now to get saved RECEIVED CHRIST today!  It was AWESOME!  So cool! Tears streaming down his face.  I almost lost it.

— Another guy met an Elementer (crazy story that I don’t have time to tell here) at Walmart yesterday.  After being invited to church he told me “I knew I had to be in church today.”  He came, and got saved.

— Saw one whole family stand up to get saved today.  A mom and her 2 kids.  On their connection card they marked “I became a follower of Christ today” then with a big smiley face they wrote “ALL 3 OF US”.  LOL I love it!

— The last two weeks at Element have been amazing, seeing so many people pass from death unto life.  So cool.  Go God!

— I LOVE seeing people get saved.  Nothing like it.  Some people had GREAT questions on what their next steps today too.

— I think we got the best response ever of those who stood, compared to how many followed through on connection cards.

— I need to blog some details about some of the stories this week.  SO COOL.

—  696 in church today.  Werid to say we were WAY down when there are 700 people, but we were WAY down.

— 3rd service was slim pickens today.  All three services were down from normal.

— Curtis and Keenan with the help of some other Elementers did an AMAZING drama sketch today.  VERY funny with a powerful twist at the end.  Perfectly set up my message.

— The band did a song we learned two weeks ago called “I’ve Had Questions”.  Fast becoming one of my new favorites.

— Element, I hope you realize how good you have it with our music.  Worship ROCKS at Element.

— I spoke on Jesus’ words from Matthew 7 today “Not everyone who says to me ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven.”

— Our Life’s Toughest Question was “Why would a loving God send people to hell?”  The answer is HE DOESN’T.  People choose to go there.

— Matthew 7:13 says “The highway to hell is broad and there are many who CHOOSE that way.”

— Had The Tour tonight and was able to meet some new people to Elemenet.  I love hearing about how people found our church and learning their stories.  The bigger we get the more valuable The Tour is to me to meet people and put names to faces.

— Alright, time to veg.  My mind can’t take much more.  Gonna watch the Survivor finale with my bride.

Following Christ,

Jeff

2 AM Adjustment

16 05 2009

I just started trying to devleop a new habit of keeping my notebook by my bed in case I get awoken with a thought I don’t want to forget.  It seems so many times I’ll get this idea in the middle of the night but I don’t want to get out of bed to go find my notebook so I just go back to sleep.  Well, last night I had my pen and notebook next to my bed.  It’s like it called out to me.  At 2 AM the Lord started speaking to my heart some additions (changes) to this Sundays message.  For about an hour I would lay back down, then BOOM get another thought.  It was kind of annyoing but awesome at the same time.  I ended up with about a page and a half of notes to try and re-work my sermon with.  I am VERY excited about tomorrow.   We have a POWERFUL drama you won’t want to miss and I really feel good about what God wants me to say.  It is challenging, and may not be easy for some people to hear, but it IS God’s Word and I hope it will lead people to the Truth.  I don’t know if I’ll ever go to bed without my notebook again.  The thoughts I felt impressed to write down were better than what I hard originally written down.  I don’t think I could have remembered half of it if I hadn’t taken my notebook to bed.  If you’re an Elementer, I hope to see you tomorrow and it’s NOT TOO LATE to invite someone to come with you.  If you know someone you’ve been thinking about inviting to church that needs to know Jesus, there isn’t a better day than tomorrow!

Adjusting,

Jeff

Sunday Rumination (5-10-09)

10 05 2009

First off HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!  To all you moms out there, I hope you have a GREAT day!

—   To my wife.  Sabrina, you are AMAZING!  Thank you for all that you do as my husband, my kids’ mother AND as a pastors wife.  I cannot imagine doing what I do without you.  Our home is blessed because of you.  Our kids may not always show it now, but you are helping to mold them into men and women of God.  I love you.

— To my mom!  Thank you so much for being the woman you were in our lives.  I wouldn’t be who I am today without you.  You were an amazing model to us as kids.  I imagine you wondered when we were growing up if you were parenting right.  I hope our lives now show you how great you were.  I love you.

Today we had “a moment”.  It was one of those worship experiences that you’ll remember for a LONG time.  At least it was for me and some of the people I talked to.  Here are my ruminations on the day.

— At least 12 people walked forward to “come home” to the Father today.

— I had some personal conversations with individuals who received Christ as Savior.  It NEVER gets old hearing about people finding life.

— I talked with one guy who got saved in 2nd service.  He used to be an alcoholic and drug addict.  He said he has never had any relationship with God.  Today he prayed to receive Jesus.  He told me “I didn’t know if God would want me”.  WOW!  Awesome!

— Numerous conversations with those people who came forward.  Seeing people who were dead now alive, and lost now found means EVERYTHING!

— 892 in church today.  Very even throughout each service

— We continued Life’s Toughest Questions today with “Does God really love me?”  The answer is “YES”.  I think we’re asking the wrong question though.  It’s not IF He loves us…it is HOW?

— I told the story of the prodigal son and we looked at HOW God loves us, not just IF he does.

— This is a question I have wrestled with.  How could He love me after what I’ve done?  Was VERY challenged by the message myself.  Even in preparing it.

— Adam put together an unbelievable worship set today.  He has been looking forward to today for a while.  The worship set up PERFECTLY the message for today.  Adam, GREAT job leading us to the throne of God.

— The band nailed worship today.  Every service was spot on.  Different feel in each service but they were tight today.

— Not one service was “bad” today, but MY GOODNESS third service was off the HOOK!  I’m not sure I’ve felt the Spirit of God that thick and heavy in a worship service for a long time.  The Spirit of God was on the loose today folks.  SO GOOD!

— Two young men (friends) came forward in 3rd service to receive Christ.  When they stood together at the altar and started praising God as the church sang behind them I lost it.  They knelt down lost and stood up found.  It was one of those special God moments you get to be a part of.

— From worship, through the message and then the altar call it was just so heavy.

— We sang  a portion of a song called “How He Loves” today.  One line in their wrecks me every time.  “I don’t have time to maintain these regrets when I think about the way…He loves us.  Oh how He loves us.”  SO good.

—  What’s past is past and what’s forgiven is forgiven.  Sometimes I just need to MOVE ON.

— We sang the Cruz original “The One Who Loves Me”  That song could seriously “make it”.  In my opinion anyway.

—  Announced the baby bottle fundraiser for Life Choice Pregnancy Care Center today.  Make sure and pick up your bottle in the church lobby and start filling it up with spare change.

Life Choice is a Christian based, God centered ministry for women who become pregnant and don’t know what to do.  They offer counseling and have a free store with lightly used mother and baby supplies for the moms. They want to help moms make healthy and informed decisions.

— Element Church supports Life Choice financially each month as a community outreach partner.  This week, instead of purchasing cheesy mothers day gifts that no one will use, we are donating above and beyond our normal monthly donation to Life Choice in honor of all the Element moms!  We pray it will be a blessing to Life Choice.

— Electric work began on The Well (coffee shop) this past week.  We are seeking to raise $20,000 to renovate that space into a kickin’ coffee shop.  We are asking Elementers to seek God on what He can give through them between now and August.  I encourage you to ask the Lord “What do you want to do through us?”

—  If you give to the project please write “Fill The Well” on the memo or envelope.

— You can give online to Element Church HERE.

— Introduced Pastor Kody and his family today.  SO EXCITED to get him up here.  I have some trouble staff he needs to straighten up.  LOL just kidding.

— Be praying for Kody, his wife Julie and their 4 kids.  They are needing to sell a house in Oklahoma and find housing here.  God is in control and we trust Him!  They are looking at housing this week while here.

— The Bybee’s will be moving here on May 23rd and he’ll start at Element on June 1st as our Executive Pastor.  You can read more about his role HERE.

— My only son turned 8 yesterday.  Doesn’t seem possible.  We left for Wal-Mart a little after 7 AM yesterday morning with his birthday money.  He couldn’t wait.  He was able to buy a new bike, a nerf gun and a movie.  It was a fun father/son time.

— Taking all the kids to the circus tonight.  Gonna be funny taking OUR circus to THE circus.  We might entertain more than the circus does.  lol

—  Alright, long as usual.  LOVE being a part of Element.  You guys ROCK!  Looking forward to hangin’ with friends tonight.

Following Christ,

Jeff
