This is my final post of the series. Not sure anyone got anything out of it, but it helped me to process some things. Bloogging has a way of doing that for me. You can link to the other 4 parts by going HERE. ‘
#5 Command of the platform. This is an ABSOLUTE MUST and if not executed will kill the sense of worship pretty quickly. If the worship leader, regardless of whether you are singing hymns or modern worship. Band or accapella. Acoustic or rock. The worship leader MUST command the stage. Nothing kills the mood or sense of worship faster than someone who isn’t confident, can’t lead, or doesn’t demand attention from the platform. I don’t care HOW talented you are, if you don’t take command of the platform you will never be successful in leading worship.
I’ve experienced it. Someone is incredibly talented but horribly timid. It makes it awkward for everyone. There is something very comforting AND engaging in worship, when the leader takes command of the platform but STILL worships personally. That’s more than just singing, IT’S WORSHIPING! Great worship leaders have the ability to engage themselves in worshiping God while never losing connection with the people and leading them in worship. Adam has that ability. If you’ve ever watched Adam lead, you’ve also seen someone worship.
I’m convinced the best worship leaders aren’t even the best singers. I think there is SO MUCH MORE in being a great worship leader than talent. Of course you need to have some talent, but most often, being a great worship leader has VERY LITTLE to do with how you sound. In fact, out of all five things I’ve blogged about in this series…NONE of them mention talent. I think these other five things are a MUST before talent is ever discussed. If you don’t have these 5 things, the greatest voice in the world WILL NOT make up for it.
Element, I want you to know how blessed we are to have Adam as our worship leader. He’s grown a TON and continues to hone his craft. I’ve seen all 5 of these qualities in him and only re-confirmed the importance of each one. Maybe I need to do blogs like this for every position in the church. You never know.
Grateful,
Jeff
