The Making Of A Great Worship Leader Pt. 4

30 04 2009

You can read the other posts on this HERE, HERE and HERE.  Like I’ve said…I am NOT a worship leader, but I feel like there are some things that can make a great one.  These are coming from the perspective of the senior pastor.  Let me say this too.  These are ALL things that I see in Adam, which is why I noticed them.

#4  Submission to the Senior Pastor. The senior pastor needs to give freedom, but the worship leader needs to remember who leads the church.  I am convinced that the worship leader will have NO PROBLEM submitting to the senior pastor, if they feel like the senior pastor trusts, supports and gives them some freedom.  Pastors, if your worship leader isn’t submitting, it may be because of the way you’re leading.  Just saying!

While Adam has creative freedom and song selection freedom, there are times he has to submit.  I know it probably hasn’t always been easy for him.  There have been Sundays I’ve asked him to cut songs short because I need to preach longer.  That probably sucks for the worship leader, but EVERY time I’ve asked him, he does it.  I hope that’s some reflection on the way I’ve led by allowing him freedom.

There are weeks when he’s had an entire worship set done and I ask for a specific song to be added, AND HE DOES IT!  I know that I’ve asked him to sing songs that he would probably NEVER pick.  Guess what?  You probably never knew as an attender because he sang it like it was his favorite.  THAT will make a GREAT worship leader.  If you’re not willing to sumbit to the authority of your senior pastor you shouldn’t be on the platform leading worship because you DO NOT have the heart of God.

I think it’s funny that some people have made comments to me about worship.  Whether it’s volume, style, song selection, whatever.  Like Adam is just running willy nilly with worship.  I support what Adam is doing 100%…BECAUSE HE’S SUBMISSIVE TO THE WAY I WANT WORSHIP AT ELEMENT!  Adam wouldn’t lead worship in a way I wouldn’t approve, that’s part of what makes him great.

If a worship leader wants to be great they have got to submit to their senior pastor.  If you can’t do that, YOU NEED TO LEAVE!  Adam and I meet every week to discuss sermon themes so he knows how to select songs that set up my message.  Adam ALWAYS runs the song sets by me, knowing that even though he has freedom, he wants to make sure he’s in submission to my leading.  I’ve heard of pastor and worship leader nightmares.  We just don’t have that at Element.  I give him freedom, he leads with excellence and in submission.

Learning to lead,

Jeff

Parking Lot

29 04 2009

I’m excited to reveal that the other half of the parking lot is behind re-paved as we speak.  The new parking lot looks AWESOME and will definitely make for a less bumpy entrance when driving into Element’s parking lot.  Not sure if we’ll have parking stripes up before Sunday, so it might be a little more chaotic than usual parking cars.

Grant, Andy, want to add anything?

The Making Of A Great Worship Leader Pt. 3

29 04 2009

Continuing my series of posts today on the making of a great worship leader.  My first two posts can be read HERE and HERE.  This is the only thing in the list that is out of the worshp leaders control, but I think it is absolutely VITAL to the success of ANY worship leader.  No matter how talented and gifted a worship leader is…no matter how in tune to the heart of God…no matter how great their desire for God to be worshipped…without this one they are sunk.

#3  A senior pastor who…  A.  Worships. If the senior pastor who leads the church is not a worshiper, the congregation WILL NOT be as well.  There may be a few exceptions, but the senior pastor sets the tone for the worship of the church.  If the pastor doesn’t stand when supposed to, the congregation will pick up on that.  If the pastor doesn’t sing out loud the congregation will pick up on that.  If the pastor is not expressive in worship, the people will not be expressive in their worship.  I think for a worship leader to be great, they MUST have a senior pastor who engages in worship AND enjoys it!  I do my best to be on the front row for an entire worship set at least one service each Sunday.  I also get up to the front row for a portion of every worship set.  I want to support Adam in leading and I want to lead our people in worship.  I LOVE worship and I want that to be SEEN!

A senior pastor who…B.  gives them freedom. I think the two people that need to be on the same page the MOST on a staff team are the worship leader and senior pastor.  The senior pastor has to set the tone for the vision and the direction of the church, and that includes worship, BUT at some point the pastor MUST show his trust and support of the worship leader by giving them freedom.  I made it clear to Adam the kind of worship I wanted when we started Element Church.  We didn’t see eye to eye on worship right away, but through some discussion and vision we molded what Element worship would be.  I can’t be over Adam’s shoulder always telling him what worship should be.  That will stifle him AND stifle the worship of the church.  If a pastor cannot trust their worship leader to LEAD THE WORSHIP MINISTRY then they shouldn’t be leading worship.  Adam has creative freedom at Element.  I don’t tell him what songs to pick or how to sing them.  He DOES ask for my input, and on occasion I will request a song that really fits my sermon, but Adam is paid for, AND I TRUST HIM to lead that ministry at Element.  Most Sunday’s I’m as surprised as anyone when it comes to the sound or arrangement of ANY song.

Pastor, you must be willing to sing songs that you may not have chosen, using styles that may not be your favorite, in arrangements that you had no control over.  And if you do, you’re helping make your worship leader GREAT!  More importantly, you’re helping to facilitate GREAT WORSHIP!

It is HORRIBLE leadership if you are a senior pastor and will not let go of AND release your worship leader to have freedom.  Either you have the wrong worship leader, or the church has the wrong pastor.  Ouch…But it’s true!  You’ll end up losing a potentially GREAT worship leader if you don’t give freedom, or you’ll have a church that doesn’t worship!

Worshiping,

Jeff

The Making Of A Great Worship Leader Pt. 2

28 04 2009

Yesterday I started a series of posts on worship leading.  You can read my first one HERE.  Admittedly I am not a worship leader, but I felt like God gave me some insight into what makes a great worship leader.  These are in now way original to me I’m sure, they are just things I’ve been processing and wanted to blog them. The first thing a great worship leader has is a desire for GOD to be worshipped! This is greater than their desire to worship God personally!

#2  A commitment to spiritual disciplines I am convinced that a worship leader who is NOT consistently committed to spiritual disciplines WILL NOT be a successful worship leader.  A great worship leader can’t rely on their God given talent, their song selection, their band, their “experience”.  A great worship leader MUST rely solely on their personal connection with God through the developing and practicing of spiritual disciplines.

The worship leaders desire needs to be connecting the people with the heart of God.  How can they lead people to the heart of God if they themeselves haven’t gone there?  In my own ministry, there is a DEFINITE difference in my sermons when I have practiced spiritual disciplines and times when I haven’t.

The worship leader MUST be in the Word of God daily, and it needs to be personal time with God, not office time looking for Scripture guidance for songs.  The worship leader MUST spend intentional time of seeking God’s face through prayer.  This needs to be personal prayer time as well, that is NOT centered around worship planning, but around the molding of their own heart.  The worship leader needs to schedule times of fasting.  Fasting is a spiritual discipline in which we abstain from something (food, caffeine, tv, etc) in order to seek God’s direction or will in our lives.

I think pastors and worship leaders make a very common mistake.  We spend too much time praying for God to direct and bless our ministries, inspire our sermons or give us a great worship set.  We need to be praying for God to make US into who HE wants us to be.

If the worship leader is not purposely allowing God to mold him, his ministry will never be molded and he will never be great! We MUST stop concerning ourselves with the outcome of our ministries, and start CONSUMING ourselves with the outflow of our heart!  Now that dog’ll hunt right there.  If the outflow of my heart is in tune with the heart of God, my ministry outcome will be successful!  (And that applies to ALL areas of ministry and life)

Trying to be disciplined,

Jeff

The Making Of A Great Worship Leader Part 1

27 04 2009

Two weeks ago our pastoral staff team was able to go to our denominational district pastors and wives retreat.  Adam was asked to lead worship at the event and did an OUTSTANDING job.  He’d tell you he wasn’t thrilled about not just getting to retreat, but he served willingly and I think God rewarded him for that.  While we were there, worshiping together, I realized some things about worship and specifically worship leading that I started to process.  I am NOT a worship leader, but I LOVE to worship.  Adam lead with just an acoustic guitar, djembe and a bass guitar (not all by himself cause…that would be amazing lol)  It only furthered my opinion that it isn’t just the method of worship, but the heart of the leader and the worshippers that facilitates worship.  I think there are some things that make a great worship leader and wanted to share some thoughts.  Every worship leader, I feel, needs these things to be successful.

#1  A desire for GOD to be worshipped. Notice I DIDN’T say a desire to worship God.  I’m not sure this series of posts will be in order of most importance but this one has got to be up there at #1 or at least tied with what I’ll talk about tomorrow.  As I’ve watched Adam lead the worship ministry at Element Church I’ve learned that his desire for GOD to be worshipped is GREATER than his desire to worship God.

Adam (with help of his team) plans worship out WEEKS in advance.  They pray over the set.  Study songs.  Chord progressions.  Keys.  New ways to sing old songs.  Etc.  Not so they can “sound really cool”, but in the  hopes that somehow, it will help people WORSHIP GOD!

Rarely is Adams main concern how he or the band sounded.  YES they want to sound good, and YES they put a TON of work into sounding good.  But anytime there has been a major goof in worship, or the set didn’t work, or the band just wasn’t on, Adam is MOST dissapointed in the fact that in some way they may have hindered God from being worshipped.  I LOVE that about Adam.  From the moment he joined the team, I have never questioned his motive.  His passion is for the God the ages to be worshipped by HiS people and he does EVERYTHING he can to facilitate that.  And his team is developing that same heart.  If anyone on his team doesn’t have that heart, they shouldn’t be there.

Too many worship leaders fall for the trap of putting “their” worship of God above God being worshipped coorporately.  Too many leaders accept “worship” of their band as well and they take the place of God in the church.  But that’s another post for another day.

For a worship leader to be GREAT and for a worship leader to be SUCCESSFUL, one of their MAIN focuses must be THAT GOD IS WORSHIPPED!

Worshiping,

Jeff

Sunday Rumination (4-26-09)

26 04 2009

Another great day at Element today!  So weird cause it was my second Sunday in a row not preaching.  Here are my ruminations on the day.

— SO NICE to have the extra Sunday break from preaching.  I LOVE preaching.  It is my passion.  But there is something so refreshing about having two Sundays off in a row.  My body, voice, mind, spirit all feels great!  So healthy to develop the practice of rest.

—  If you are a pastor, you need to build in times for a break.  If you go to church, YOUR PASTOR NEEDS A BREAK!  It is not only healthy for you as the pastor but the church needs a break from YOU.  Element Church doesn’t rest on my shoulders, it rests on GOD’S.  The church needs to hear from other people and qualified preachers on your staff need opportunity to preach.  Schedule it in or you won’t do it.

— This the my first time ever with two off in a row and I can’t tell you how much the extra Sunday makes a difference.  I was challenged to practice that from another pastor and I can see why.  Definitely need to do that at least once a year.

— I build in a certain # of Sundays a year in which a guest or one of our staff will preach.  Burnout will occur without it.

— BOTH Andy and Curtis are fully capable of preaching.  They both did such and outstanding job.  I listened to Andy’s sermon online and Curtis today nailed it.  If you missed either service you NEED to listen to their messages.  Such good challenges.

— I can’t tell you how comforting it is as a senior pastor to know you can leave your pulpit to qualified and gifted preachers.  I didn’t worry ONE BIT last week or this week what kind of sermon we would have.  Thanks guys!

—  876 in church today.  So weird how 876 feels down.  Perspective changes SO quickly!  Continue to be amazed at God bringing people to Element.

—  I was lost today.  Didn’t know what to do with myself.  I was able to poke my head into each kids class today.  I did that during first service.  I also helped run one of our computers first service, lol.  I got to sit with my wife in 2nd service.  Love worshiping and listening with her.  I then sent Twitter updates of Curtis’ sermon during third service.

— You should try Twitter.  I have my updates on the sidebar here on my blog.  Pastor Kody, Adam and Curtis are all on Twitter as well.  Still working on Grant and Andy.  Facebook is a great way to connect with and follow the staff and church.  Element has a facebook page as well as all of our staff.

—  (And YES 2 months ago I hated Twitter.  It’s kind of my M.O. to boycott things that I eventually succomb to.  Maybe I should boycott OU winning championships and they’d finally pull one out.  Thanks Ryan for finally breaking me into the Twittersphere )

—  Curtis spoke on experiencing God today.  It was so good.  “Jesus is not something to believe in but a person to be experienced”

— I was VERY challenged by Curtis’ word today.

— Curtis did an “altar call” in a totally new way today.  He displayed his phone number on the screen and said that anyone who wanted to talk further about what it means to KNOW Jesus and not just know ABOUT him to text him.  We are going to follow up with those people this week.  He had 46 text messages following service (not all of them from seekers, but plenty were).

— I thought it was a GREAT idea as he was talking about connecting to the “college” generation and what they are looking for.  We are so tied to technology, why not use it for the Kingdom.  Sparked some great ideas in my mind.

—  Curtis ended the service really cool with us all holding our cell phones up.  Definitely was different for everyone!  He was dead on though in saying that our technology is a tool and it can be used for evil, or we can leverage it for good.  How can we leverage technology for good?  Technology in and of itself is NOT evil, it is the use of it.  That wasn’t even really the gist of his message at all, started sparking some thoughts in my mind about how to use it further.

—  Couple of thoughts from Pastor Curtis that I loved:

I don’t want to teach you about Jesus. I want to introduce you. We teach about dead people we introduce people who are alive.

You can’t introduce someone that you don’t know.

We can’t convince people that God is real they have to experience Him.

Its one thing to pray for something or even to believe it. Its another thing to actually experience God do it.

Identity is not found in our knowledge but in our experiences.

— We have The Tour tonight at 5 PM.  Always love connecting with new people at Element.  Gonna chill a bit before I head back to the church.

— With two weeks off from preaching you’re going to need to buckle up next week.  Thanks Element!  I love you guys.

Following Christ,

Jeff

Vacation Update and Pictures

24 04 2009

My wife and I got back from our vacation on Tuesday evening.  We had an AWESOME time flying to Miami and hopping a cruise ship to the Bahamas.  Sabrina earned the all expense paid trip through her home based business Tastefully Simple.  She had to sell a certain amount of product and recruit a certain number of consultants.  She met her quota and off we went to the Bahamas.  We got to spend a couple of days in Miami as well due to flight scheduling.  All in all we got to spend 6 days together on vacation, and 3 days prior to that we were together at our denominational pastors and wives retreat.  It was a great way to relax following Easter weekend.  Sabrina’s dad and step mom, Mike and Elaine, graciously came up to Cheyenne to watch the kids during this time.  Most of it was covered by just her step-mom since her dad had to head back to OK for work.  (THANK YOU Mike and Elaine for your help!)  Below is a link to some pictures of our trip.  We were able to do a cool excursion in the Bahamas on Saturday.  We went to a private island where we were able to swim with stingrays and actually fed them out of our hands.  It was amazing to be snorklin in the water and watch a stingray swim within arms reach right underneath you.  So cool!  There were about 700 Tastefully Simple consultants on the boat and many of them earned the trip for their spouses or a friend as well.  Sabrina is well on her way to earning a trip to Cancun next year.  I’ll get back in the blog swing next week.  Trying to get caught up from being gone so long.  Finding the groove is difficult after vacation.

Rested,

Jeff

Introducing…

16 04 2009

n1660350398_14245_9651Hey Element Church!  I wanted to introduce our newest staff member to you.  We are so pumped to make this move for Element church.  The rapid growth and change of Element  has brought the business side of what we do FAR beyond my capacity to lead it.  I feel my time needs to be dedicated to preparation for preaching, teaching, vision and planning.  As the church has grown my time to those necessities has decreased immensely.  We started praying for someone who could assume the role of Executive Pastor at Element Church.   We knew this day would eventually come as we continued to grow.  God found our man in Kody Bybee.  I’ll have to share the story in church sometime because it is REALLY cool how God orchestrated all of this.  Kody is a close college friend of mine and has felt the call to come and serve Element in this capacity.  He comes to us from a church where he has already successfully fulfilled this role.  We flew him and his wife up here a few weekends ago to interview, and we also received the approval of our Leadership Council at Element to hire him.  His wife’s name is Julie and they have 4 kids.  We will be introducing them and their family on Sunday, May 10th, when they are in town looking for houses.  The Bybee’s currently live in Bartlesville, OK.  Kody is going to fill a HUGE hole in Element and will enable us to go to another level of ministry.  I can’t wait for Kody to get started tightening up the ship called Element! I know some of you are asking “What does an executive pastor do?”  An Executive Pastor takes over ALL things business, organization and structure in the church.  Budgets, finances, personnel, hirings, firings, insurance, legal issues, facilities, reviews etc. is handled by the XP.  Kody puts it this way “I feel called to do all the things the pastors shouldn’t HAVE to do so they can do what they are SUPPOSED to do!”  LOVE IT!  Kody is a man I trust and believe he will carry out the vision God has given us with precision and excellence.  Kody’s first official day with Element Church will be June 1st.

Excited

Jeff
