How much weight can pastors gain?

22 12 2008

Holy cow!  We have been BLESSED with some awesome stuff being dropped by the office this week.  THANK YOU to everyone who has come in to offer Holiday cheer.  Although the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to  hear.  We had someone bring in an AMAZING lunch for staff meeting today.  We’ve had goodies brought in.  And one special young lady just brought in a 54 oz. bag of skittles.  Now THAT is a goodie I’ll take all year.  MAN the food and treats are good.  Thanks again!

Eating,

Jeff

Sunday Ruminations (12-21-08)

21 12 2008

First off, MERRY CHRISTMAS!  Our second Christmas Sunday ever at Element Church turned out to be another great one.  It was VERY cold again today, but it didn’t keep the people from coming out.  Here are my ruminations on the day.

— 10 people came to the altar today to receive Christ or renew fellowship with Him.  YES, we had an old fashioned altar call.  Our first one EVER at Element Church.  I was so stoked. THAT is the most important # on the day.

— I didn’t plan on it at all but at the end of the message we had a song planned that Adam was going to sing.  I just felt like we needed to open the altar.  With never doing an actual inviation (because of the lack of space in theater) I didn’t know what the response would be.  Plus we have a lot of people who are unfamiliar with church and may have never even seen an altar call (weird to think about).  But Adam started singing the song and 5 people came forward in first service.  VERY moving.  A couple of men at the altar were moved to tears as they sought Christ.  Reminded me of why we are here.  I remember praying for this to happen LONG before Element ever started.

— We closed the service with “I Celebrate The Day” by Relient K.  VERY cool song.  Chorus: “The first time that you opened your eyes, did you realize you would be my Savior.  And the first breath that left your lips did you know that it would change the world forever.”

—  New attendance record today.  615 people came to Element.  I was blown away.

— Second service was PACKED.  We ran out of chairs and had to raid the youth room for more.  I can’t believe it.  Need to order more this week.  We can fit another 50 – 60 chairs in the room.  Maybe up to 75 or more if we REALLY squeeze.

— If you currently attend second service and can switch to first, PLEASE DO!  It’s crazy that 3 weeks into the building and we’re full in one service.  We had 100 seats open in first service.  TONS of kids in first service though.  Ekidz had 75 I think first service.

— Proud of Adam and the band today.  They weren’t able to practice this week which always makes for an interesting Sunday.  One of the songs we did in first service just didn’t gel like it needed to.  Adam and the band called an audible, pulled the song for second service and threw in another one with NO practice at all.  It fit the worship set better and don’t think anyone knew (until now).  They did a GREAT job.  LOVE the version of O Come Let Us Adore Him they do.

— We’re having trouble getting the sound mix to be right in the new place but Andy is doing a fantastic job figuring it out.  Made some adjustments today that seemed to help.

— This is going to sound wrong, but I loved the sermon today.  I really enjoyed preaching it, felt like it connected and loved the theme we went with.  The topic we had originally planned for today fit better into our next sermon series (Which I’m SUPER stoked about).  I was intrigued by a sermon series from another church planter called “Jesus Is NOT The Reason For The Season”.  I preached from Matthew 1 today, Joseph’s encounter with the Angel telling Him of Jesus.  I asked the question “What is the reason for the season?”  What if it’s not Jesus?

— Before you go screaming in the streets PLEASE either listen to the message OR take a chill pill.  There was great power in the Christmas story but that’s not the reason.  Prophecies were fulfilled proving Jesus is the Christ but that isn’t the reason.  A call to obedience like Joseph and Mary had but that isn’t the reason.  The reason for the season is US!  Without US and our sin problem Christmas would have never happened.

—  Jesus isn’t the reason for the season, He is the SOLUTION.  Jesus didn’t come so that we could have Christmas.  He came so that we would have a SAVIOR.  It was MY sin and MY problem that caused Jesus to come.  If it wasn’t for us there would be no Christmas.

—  That thought causes such anguish and joy at the same time.  Anguish that I have treated Christ the way I have in my life, but JOY that He came for me anyway.  I OWE HIM MY LIFE!!  So do you!

—  “You shall call Him Jesus for He will save HIS people from their sins.”

— Thanks to Michael at Oak Leaf Church for helping in the inspiration for the message.

— Over $3000 was given toward Adopt A Mom.  We were able to provide Christmas and help pay a months mortgage for FIVE families.  THANKS ELEMENT CHURCH!

— Rockin’ Around The Tree is COMPLETELY SOLD OUT (of free tickets lol).  If you have tickets and will NOT be using them PLEASE bring them back to the office.  Don’t forget it’s on the 23rd.  Christmas EVE EVE.

— 25 families are signed up to deliver boxes of donuts to buisness and people that have to work on Christmas Eve.  LOVE that we’re doing this.  That’s 75 dozen donuts going out around the city with our servant evangelism cards saying “This is our simple way of saying God loves you”.  If you want to sign up you can email the office and we’ll get you on the list.  Better do it quick though, we need to order the donuts.

— Alright, this got long.  GREAT day.  Can’t wait to hit the office tomorrow and start working on the week.

Following Christ,

Jeff

What does vomit and a highway have in common?

19 12 2008

…NOTHING, unless you were in our van on the way home from Oklahoma.  We are back in Cheyenne and had a good trip.  Great time with family and a very good celebration of the life of Sabrina’s Grandmother.  Thank you for those who were praying for us.

On Tuesday our nephew, Kobe, got VERY sick.  Throw up (and the other end too) kind of sick.  We didn’t think anything of it until we walked into a gas station at Russell, Kansas.  Sabrina was holding our two year old Jaydah, when from her she heard a little burping sound, then a very loud splattering sound as vomit covered the gas station floor.  Jaydah had lost her lunch.  LITERALLY.  It was disgusting.  The gas station attendant was OVERLY friendly and cleaned it all up.  Sab got Jaydah and herself cleaned up and then we loaded in the van and hit I-70 toward Denver.

About 2 mintues onto the highway I looked at Sab and asked “Do you have a plan for us if that happens again but she’s stuck in her car seat?”  “Ummm, no”  Not 5 minutes later…burping sound, Sabrina SCREAMS, Sabrina grabs trash can, shoves it in front of Jaydah, but it was too late.  She was covered, her car seat was covered, it splattered on Jonahs head and around Jaydah.  YUCK!  We pulled over and cleaned up as best we could.  IT WAS EVERYWHERE!  Her car seat straps, buckles, coat, clothes, face, everywhere.  We were borrowing a friends van, thankfully most all of it collected into Jaydah’s car seat and not their floor or upholstery.

We hit the road again and multiple times Sab was trying to get the trash can in front of her face.  It was HORRIBLE.  It ripped my heart out as a dad.  Eventually there was nothing we could do.  She literally had to sit in her throw up until we got home.  She could keep NOTHING down.  As soon as it would hit her stomach, up it would come.  Sometimes the trash can made it, most often it didn’t.  We talked about stopping at a hotel but knew one of the other kids most likely would have it the next day, and we still be traveling with sick kids.  We decided to push through.

Poor Jaydah didn’t know what was going on.  Sometimes for 10-15-20 minutes she would cry out my name “Daddy.  Daddy.  DADDYYY!”  I wanted so badly to unbuckle her from that seat, vomit and all, and hold her tightly and let her know it was ok.  That’s when driving down the highway, God spoke to my heart.  “That’s exactly what I’ve done for you Jeff.  Remember those times you’ve been covered in puke, your own mess and sickness.  EVERYTIME you called my name, I was ready to scoop you up, mess and all.  How many times have I held you when you were covered in your own puke?”  WOW!

Then I began thinking.  How many times have I, we, the church, not wanted someone around “our ministry” because they were covered in spiritual vomit.  They might get us dirty.  They might pass it on to us.  They might mess up the place.  Hmm.  I’m glad our Father doesn’t treat us that way.  In the same way I wanted to scoop up my baby girl, vomit and all, our Heavenly Father HAS done and STILL does for us.  Vomit and all.

Thankful for my Father,

Jeff

Quick Thoughts

15 12 2008

Hey everyone!  I didn’t get a Rumination up this week because we were on the road to Oklahoma for Sabrina’s grandmothers funeral.  Here are some quick thoughts on yesterday and today.

— 514 yesterday  So funny how perspectice changes when you’re in a different place.  Having the extra room made it feel way down but I’m still adjusting to being away from the theater.

— The band did the best version of Joy To The World I think I’ve ever heard.  Such a cool version.

— I’m SUPER excited about Rockin’ Around The Tree.

— GREAT service yesterday.  The message on hurt, pain, injury especially in relation to family really brought out some deep issues.  We had a very cool commitment time at the end of the service.

— I shared from 2 Samuel and David’s treatment of Mephibosheth.  I challenged people at the end of the service to “release” those who had hurt them by writing their name down and placing it in a bowl on one of three tables in the front of the worship center.  I also challenged us to “relase” those things that make us feel unworthy to eat at the King’s Table.  David invited Mephibosheth, who was lame, crippled and unfit for the King’s table, to eat there anyway.  God does the same for us.

— It was -34 degrees windchill before first service started.  Yes, that is a MINUS.  I told the church that 40 of the 50 states would have canceled church, BUT NOT IN WYOMING!

—  We got here in OK at 12:30 AM local time (Central).  Made for one tired family today.

— We got to spend some great time with family today.  Ate at my FAVORITE sub shop of all time, Uptown Subs.  Did some driving around and reminiscing at Sabrina’s old house, my old house, our old school’s, churches, jobs.  It was fun.

— Get your Rockin’ Around The Tree tickets at the office or at church on Sunday.

— Click HERE to go vote for your favorite songs of the past year as we’ll be having fun on December 28th singing the set list that YOU CHOOSE.  We’ll also celebrate what God has done this past year at Element Church and look forward to what He is going to do.

— Got lots on my blog list I’d like to get down.  I’ll get on that when I get back.

Following Christ,

Jeff

The Unhappy Way To Visit Family

13 12 2008

We just got word this afternoon that Sabrina’s grandmother has passed away.  Her battle with cancer is now over and in that weird way, it is an answer to prayer.  Her cancer started in the lungs and two weeks ago they found 15 tumors in her brain.  They knew it wasn’t going to be long from that point.  For the past day and a half she has been in and out of consciousness and the family was just praying for God to take her.  Sabrina, the kids, and I  will be leaving immediately following church on Sunday and we would appreciate your prayers.  While we look forward to seeing family, it is definitely not the circumstances in which you wish to spend time with them.  Thank you for your prayers.

Following Christ,

Jeff

Thursday Thoughts

11 12 2008

I’m SUPER excited for several  reasons.

#1  I’m preaching from a passage I’ve never preached from before on Sunday.  We’ll be looking at a little known (at least little talked on) story out of the Old Testament.  I know, I know, once again we are doing a Christmas series without using any Christmas passages.  That’s how we roll.  I’m STOKED about the message God gave me for Sunday. Doesn’t all of the Bible point to Christmas and the cross though?

#2  I’ve received some GREAT comments from people about how God challenged/touched them this past Sunday.  I almost scrapped the message on Sunday morning.  I felt that it wasn’t going to be relevant to anyone.  BOY was I wrong.  So many of you have said how timely it was.  “It reached me in areas I didn’t know existed.”  “It awakened areas I didn’t know where there.”  Etc.   Just shows God knows what He’s up to.  So glad that God uses us, even when we don’t feel useful.

#3 I can’t wait for our next sermon series.  Adam has been working on some graphics for it.  We’ll be revealing it here in the next couple weeks.  It will begin on the first Sunday of January.  I’m personally getting heavily involved in the sermon series starting this Sunday with some pre-series stuff.  (You’ll see later)  I really feel that Christ, through our next series, can actually change the way we’re living.  I’ve already been challenged by what we’re going to take on.

#4  The series we’ll be starting in February is also going to be killer.  I can’t let the cat out of the bag too much, but it will be something that The General is gonna work into ALL of our Life Groups.  Not only will we be doing a sermon series as a church, but Life Groups will be doing stuff going right along with it.  As a pastoral staff, we were VERY challenged recently by what we’ll be going through in February.

#5  We started a…how do I say this…Calendar challenged (several of them widows) Life Group recently.  A couple of our AWESOME ladies in church started this group.  They had SEVEN on their first week.  SEVEN!!  Holy cow!  ROCK IT LADIES (that means “way to go”)!  I LOVE the fact that we are reaching people in all age brackets.  I am convinced that when a church has LIFE they can reach anyone.  Do they wear earplugs sometimes?  YES!  Do they always agree with our methods?  NO!  Are they pursuing Jesus and connecting to His Word?  ABSOLUTELY!  Love it!

Excited,

Jeff

First Sunday Pictures

8 12 2008

Here are some pictures (a bunch) of our first Sunday at the new location.  There are three separate slide shows.  Trying to figure out when to stop calling it the new location.  Since we’re now in it, is it our current location?  But I digress.  These were taken by an Elementer on Sunday.  Some of the worship shots are blurry due to the movement and lighting.  Great pictures.  Much better than my phone ones I’ve been posting.  We had communion and did a baby dedication on the first Sunday.  VERY cool.

You Choose

8 12 2008

youchoose2Don’t forget that for the last Sunday of December YOU get to choose the set list for Sunday morning worship.  ALL the songs we’ve done over the past year on included on the list.  Click the graphic above to go to the voting page.  There are no limits to how many times you can vote.  My wife I think is setting the pace right now for votes.  It could be a Sabrina Maness set list.  (And we don’t agree on music that often) So get out there AND VOTE!  “You Choose 2008″ Maybe your candidate didn’t win the election…so maybe this time your song will win.

Voting,

Jeff
