Sunday Rumination (10-26-08)

26 10 2008

AWESOME day today at Element.  So glad I listened to God’s voice and called the audible.  The message God gave me for today was as much for me as for anyone else.  I did have several comments from people of how this message was perfect for them.

— 8 people raised their hand today indicating that they had received Jesus as their Savior.  LOVE IT!

— 1 person was from our video venue.  SWEET!  Love knowing that people in there are still connecting with God’s Word via video.  Isn’t technology great?

— The Lead Team is talking about how we can utilize video in the future.  Whether it’s for more space, another venue or in the church planting mode.

—  543 in church today.  25 in video I think.  We are completely full in both services now.  Both services had the front row filled.  We’ll keep doing our best in the theater.  Can’t wait to be in the new location though.

— The lobby was stinkin’ crazy today in between services.  Holy cow!  It was just a mass of people.  Love seeing all the people in between.

— Speaking of new location.  Texture on the walls starts tomorrow.  ALL the major drywall is done (a few patches yet).  Painting will begin this weekend.  It’s getting close.

— I spoke today on having certainty in an uncertain world.  I really felt this was important for us in the times we are facing.  Regardless of the outcome in the elections, the stock market, oil prices or housing crunch we can be ceratain that…#1 God is in control  #2  I have my part  #3  The answers are in His Word  #4  God is with us  I used Joshua 1:1-9  You can listen or watch online later this week if you missed it.

— The band, holy smokes, did awesome.  Worship was crazy good.  Adam, thank you for your hardwork putting together everything this week.

— The band learned two new songs, sung one as a special in my message.  We revamped the order of service from what we normally do.  It felt good.  Nothing major, just some subtle changes to mix it up.

— Hearing the congregation belt out Great Is Thy Faithfulness was awesome.

— We dedicated Elyjah today.  Ely is from one of our anniversary Sunday testimony videos.  It was very cool to dedicate him today.  You can check out the testimony vid HERE.

— The family asked Grant to do the dedication.  I was MORE than thrilled to allow him the priveledge.  It was his first time to dedicate.  He did a GREAT job.

— Had a couple people from our home church in Gillette.  Awesome to see them.

— That’s about it.  Getting ready for a night of NOTHING!

Jeff

Calling An Audible

22 10 2008

Hey Element Church!  Early Monday morning as I was doing my devotions I really felt strongly that God was leading me a totally different direction for this Sunday’s sermon.  We’re in the middle of our core value series called “Heart: What We Bleed” and I knew that if I followed this leading it would be a totally unrelated to the current teaching.  I already knew what I was preaching on this week, graphics were done, Adam had worship done but I couldn’t shake the feeling that God wanted us to do this.  I ran it by the Lead Team on Monday and they all were in agreement.  So, this Sunday we are going to be taking on all this uncertainty surrounding our nation.  The elections, the stock market, oil prices, home values, etc. are all we talk about it seems like.  We are living in uncertain times but I feel like their are some things we can be certain of.  We’re gonna be talking about the Christian response to all these uncertain things we’re facing today.  Adam put together a graphic, changed the worship set, we all took on this curve ball well.  PLEASE invite people this Sunday to come as I feel we’ll be VERY challenged on how to take on these uncertain days.  If you have friends, co-workers or neighbors who have been questioning the days we’re in, this is a perfect invitation moment for you.  I believe completely in the timing of God and know that He has asked us to make this change in our plans.  We’ll pick up the series next week where we left off.  I finished my sermon today and was incredibly challenged myself.  Here is the graphic for the sermon.

Jeff

New Location Update

22 10 2008

OUTER FIREWALL IS DONE!  Why is this a big deal?  Because for our 2 hour fire wall we had to do two layers of 5/8″ sheetrock on BOTH sides of the wall.  That is 4 layers.  A fire wall has to go, not just to the ceiling, but to the ROOF.  It was not fun.  The inside of the wall will be completed this week by some volunteers coming in.  More mud and tape is going up as we speak.  Those guys are flying.  We have one more corner that needs patched and then the remaining bathroom holes patched.  Here are the latest pics.

New Location Update

21 10 2008

It’s been a busy day here at the new location.  We have some volunteers coming out every day right now for about an hour doing drywall for us.  They are also going to help us with some of our flooring.  Our mud and tape guys started today and already have 2 coats done in the welcome center and started in the worship center.  Toilets and urinals have been ordered and are ready to install.  We have someone ready to paint everything starting November 1st.  Electricians are moving right along on target.  Below are the latest pictures.  Exciting stuff.  November 23rd is still our goal.  Please continue to pray with us that the Lord grants us favor in this process.

Salvation

20 10 2008

Just found out today that the Lord saw fit to redeem one yesterday at church.  How cool is that?  Andy didn’t even give an invitation and someone got saved.  Cool stuff.

Sunday Rumination (10-19-08)…

19 10 2008

…And new reasons I know I’m old. Which one should we take first?  How about how I know I’m old.

This new knowledge of my age came after flag football today.

#4  I groan and stand up slowly when going from a sitting to a standing position.  (I’m becoming my dad lol)

#3  My left knew feels like its the size of a grapefruit.  It’s not, it just feels like it.

#2  My right shoulder and back hurts for no apparent reason.  I don’t think I did anything to it.  I just played football.  All I know is, it is SORE!  I’m learning body parts don’t need a reason to be sore as you get older.  They just are.

#1  Most of the guys on the opposing team were probably late teens to early twenties.  When leaving the game one of their players walked past me and said “Good game SIR!”  SIR?  What about bro?  Man?  G Homey?  Home slice?  SIR?  I’m getting old.

Ruminations:

— 519 today.  First service had some room 2nd was filled to the brim and put some in the video venue too.

—  Andy preached today.  He did a GREAT job!  Spoke on our core value of change.

— Talk about feeling old again.  Andy went through our youth ministry from 8 – 12th grade in Gillette.  Now he is preaching on my team?  Holy cow!

— He talked about Job and Peter.  Job had change thrust upon him without control.  Peter had a choice to change.  Great approach.

— About Job, Andy made a point that I had never thought of.  That when Job was going through ALL the mess of a life he had, he was not aware of the conversation that the devil and God had already had.  We are blessed to have that in writing in the Scripture.  That God said about Job “He is upright and blameless.  A man who fears God and shuns evil”.  That God was really in control of the situation, limiting the extent of the devils destruction.  I had never thought about the fact that Job wasn’t privy to that info.

— It is hard for me to give up the pulpit but I know it’s something I need to do.

#1  For the church.  The church needs to hear from someone else besides me.  Every church should also be prepared and know that they’ll survive without their pastor.  I want to make sure that, God forbid, if something were to happen to me that our pulpit could be filled with gifted and qualified men.

#2  For the staff.  Not everyone who is ever on staff will get to preach, but the men who are gifted and called to that arena will get the chance.  The next church planter, lead pastor, evangelist could be sitting right with us. Wow.

#3  For me.  I need Sundays where I am not preaching.  It is very rare for me to be able to sit and be challenged by a sermon.  I need that. I also need to be good at taking breaks.  It’s just healthy.

For those reasons, on a few occasions each year we’ll be blessed to hear from other guys within our staff or maybe even guest speakers.

— We were a little shorthanded on our normal set up crew this morning.  Made for some craziness pre service.

— Still working on making our video venue what it needs to be.  If people are going to be in there we want to make it the best possible environment we can for the time being.

— Got to step into The Shift for a bit on Friday.  Curtis is doing an awesome job with that.

— I love seeing people worship.

— Getting ready to spend the evening with my fam.

Following Christ,

Jeff

Don’t be afraid to say…

16 10 2008

I had a great conversation with Curtis the other day and it lead me to this post today.  A while back we made a pretty big transition of starting a college ministry called The Shift and “shifting” Curtis from our Varsity pastor to The Shift pastor.  The goal of Shift is to reach those students who are graduates through 20something, helping them make the shift from home to adulthood.  They have been meeting for a few weeks now.  Last week they had 19 and Curtis is expecting more this Friday.  His question to me after Lead Team meeting was “Do you have any advice for me if we grow really fast?”  Curtis is a volunteer pastor, meaning he works full time for the USAF and pastors a ministry here at Element Church voluntarily.  His question is a great one.  I didn’t have a definitive answer until the following day and I feel it’s actually some things that I need to remember as well.  I had him come to my office the next day and this is what I felt God was leading me to tell him (and ultimately me and any leader):

Don’t be afraid to say…

#1  “I need help”: So often in ministry I think we get the attitude that “I’ll just work harder, give more, put in more time and everything will be ok”.  When in reality, I think we’d be better off sometimes just saying “I need help!”  Help has become a bad four letter word to pastors.  ESPECIALLY men!  We see it as a sign of weakness if I can’t get done what needs to be done.  MEN/PASTORS sometimes WE NEED HELP!  Don’t be afraid to ask for it.  Church members, DON’T tell your pastors “Isn’t that what you get paid to do!”  Sure there are some lazy pastors who may ask for help cause they don’t WANT to do it, but in most cases, pastors I know are giving WAY more than what they are paid to do.  Sometimes they can’t do it all and might need some help.  Don’t be afraid to ask for it guys!

#2    “You do it!”: “Hey pastor I have this great idea, I think you should…”  “I think our church should reach out to the…”  “I think this ministry would really work…”  “I wish we could do…”  Most of the time when people say that, they are wanting the pastor to do it.  I told Curtis, people will come to you with great ideas of what to do in The Shift, don’t be afraid to say “You do it!”  When God reveals a need to me, He wants ME to do it NOT the church.  When God reveals a need to you, He probably wants YOU to do it NOT the church.  I said a few weeks ago in a sermon “When God reveals someone to you who is in need, it is not your responsibility to take it to the church first, but for you to do what you can to help them”.  We need to learn to say “You do it!”  Especially in the case of a volunteer pastor.

#3 “NO!”: Why is it so hard to say no?  Our desire for people to like us?  To avoid conflict?  To please people?  Sometimes we just need to say “NO!”  It is tough, people will get mad, but we must.  WE CAN’T BE ALL THINGS TO ALL PEOPLE!  “Hey I think we should do…”  NO.  Not always, but sometimes we need to say no.  “But what if they leave?”  Then they obviously aren’t committed to your vision.  They are committed to their vision, and will go somewhere where they can put it on someone else.  Too many pastors are controlled by vision stealers cause they won’t say “NO!”

#4 “I need a night off!”: Ministry is a tough gig, especially when doing it volunteer.  I told Curtis, I would rather you cancel The Shift on a Friday night and your family is healthy, than have a HUGE ministry every week and your family suffers.  We need to cheat the ministry before we cheat our families.  I told him he has permission to say he needs a night off.  He earned it and he deserves it.  Ministry is a 24-7 job sometimes.  It’s not necessarily a clock in and clock out thing.  I think pastors need to learn to take time off, and churches need to learn to give it to them.  Both parties are at fault too many times.

Learning these myself,

Jeff

Who made hot lunch cool?

16 10 2008

Two of our four kids are both in elementary school this year.  One of the things they were SO excited about was eating lunch at school.  Before school started they didn’t care if they had hot or cold lunch as long as they were eating it at school they were excited.  Not long after school started the cry for hot lunch from our kids became a daily routine.  They didn’t want to take their lunch box with a PB&J, chips, desert and a Capri Sun juice.  They wanted hot lunch.  Why?  Because it’s “cool”.  COOL?  You’re in stinkin’ kindergarten who determined already that hot lunch is cool? It’s food.  What first grader in the US has enough clout that they can say something is cool and it is?

The 2 arm backpack carry or the one arm.  Who makes that cool?  When I was in school if you carried your backpack with 2 arms through it you were a definite nerd.  Now, if you carry your backpack the old cool way of slingin’ it over one shoulder you’re…not cool.

Trapper Keepers anyone?  Who had a Trapper Keeper and you decorated your own?  Trapper Keepers were da bomb (even that phrase was made cool) when I was in school.  Any high schooler willing to carry one around class now?

I realized that even at 5 and 7 years old my kids are already learning to “chase cool”.  It’s innate.  We want to belong.  We want to fit in.  We want other people to like us.

While I could go the direction of saying “This means that we as the church need to be welcoming people, loving them, giving them a place to belong”, I’m not.  Why?  Because I want to say this.  The church is a lot like my kids.  Something becomes cool, and we want to do it.  I think most churches, at some point or another have fallen prey to this.  A trend develops in the church world and all the sudden everyone wants to do it cause it’s “hot lunch”…”two armed backpack”…”Trapper Keeper”.  YES, I understand our methods change, we try new things, we do church in such a way as to try and connect the un-churched.  BUT, at what point are we just “chasing cool” and at what point are we connecting people with LIFE?

I’ve fallen for this before.  Have you?  Do I want our church to be fun, exciting, energetic, “cool”.  Sure.  I’d be a moron to try and do church in a way that I wouldn’t like or people wouldn’t like.  Even traditional churches are doing church in a way that certain people will like.  Traditional people!  Every church does that to some degree regardless of how “traditional” or “modern” they may be.  We’re all trying to do church in a way that connects with people.  What I want to be careful of is following the latest “cool”.

What does God want US to do, and lets do it!  That’s IT!  REGARDLESS of what the church world says is “cool”.  Regardless of what the biggest churches are doing.  Be who God asks YOU to be!

Toting My Trapper Keeper,

Jeff
