Sunday Rumination (10-19-08)…

19 10 2008

…And new reasons I know I’m old. Which one should we take first?  How about how I know I’m old.

This new knowledge of my age came after flag football today.

#4  I groan and stand up slowly when going from a sitting to a standing position.  (I’m becoming my dad lol)

#3  My left knew feels like its the size of a grapefruit.  It’s not, it just feels like it.

#2  My right shoulder and back hurts for no apparent reason.  I don’t think I did anything to it.  I just played football.  All I know is, it is SORE!  I’m learning body parts don’t need a reason to be sore as you get older.  They just are.

#1  Most of the guys on the opposing team were probably late teens to early twenties.  When leaving the game one of their players walked past me and said “Good game SIR!”  SIR?  What about bro?  Man?  G Homey?  Home slice?  SIR?  I’m getting old.

Ruminations:

— 519 today.  First service had some room 2nd was filled to the brim and put some in the video venue too.

—  Andy preached today.  He did a GREAT job!  Spoke on our core value of change.

— Talk about feeling old again.  Andy went through our youth ministry from 8 – 12th grade in Gillette.  Now he is preaching on my team?  Holy cow!

— He talked about Job and Peter.  Job had change thrust upon him without control.  Peter had a choice to change.  Great approach.

— About Job, Andy made a point that I had never thought of.  That when Job was going through ALL the mess of a life he had, he was not aware of the conversation that the devil and God had already had.  We are blessed to have that in writing in the Scripture.  That God said about Job “He is upright and blameless.  A man who fears God and shuns evil”.  That God was really in control of the situation, limiting the extent of the devils destruction.  I had never thought about the fact that Job wasn’t privy to that info.

— It is hard for me to give up the pulpit but I know it’s something I need to do.

#1  For the church.  The church needs to hear from someone else besides me.  Every church should also be prepared and know that they’ll survive without their pastor.  I want to make sure that, God forbid, if something were to happen to me that our pulpit could be filled with gifted and qualified men.

#2  For the staff.  Not everyone who is ever on staff will get to preach, but the men who are gifted and called to that arena will get the chance.  The next church planter, lead pastor, evangelist could be sitting right with us. Wow.

#3  For me.  I need Sundays where I am not preaching.  It is very rare for me to be able to sit and be challenged by a sermon.  I need that. I also need to be good at taking breaks.  It’s just healthy.

For those reasons, on a few occasions each year we’ll be blessed to hear from other guys within our staff or maybe even guest speakers.

— We were a little shorthanded on our normal set up crew this morning.  Made for some craziness pre service.

— Still working on making our video venue what it needs to be.  If people are going to be in there we want to make it the best possible environment we can for the time being.

— Got to step into The Shift for a bit on Friday.  Curtis is doing an awesome job with that.

— I love seeing people worship.

— Getting ready to spend the evening with my fam.

Following Christ,

Jeff
