Foundations

23 09 2008

I’ll be starting my Life Group up again on Monday, Oct. 6th.  It is a 9 week course where we study some of the foundational truths of Christianity.  We start with the very basic “What is the Bible and where did it come from?” type questions.  Each week builds on the next as we form our foundation for faith.  If you are new to Christianity or want a refresher course in some things consier coming to this Life Group.  We meet in my home at 6 PM each Monday evening.  To sign up please email us or call us at the office.  You can sign up on Sundays at the Life Group table as well.

Learning,

Jeff

Intimidation

22 09 2008

Each Sunday I play with a group of guys on a flag football team.  First of all, my back and legs are so sore today that I can hardly move!  lol  (OLD!)

Yesterday we had a two o’clock game which meant that after tearing down church, getting some lunch and running home to change we were short on time.  Out football jerseys are white t-shirts with a cool football graphic on the front and our team name.  I whipped open our closet, scrolled through my white shirts not really paying attention other than looking for a graphic on the front of a shirt.  Threw it on, then over the top went my hoodie.

I got to the game and we were getting ready to warm up.  I shedded my hoodie and started walking toward the guys.  One of my teammates looked at me funny and said “What happened to your jersey?”  “My jersey?” as I said looking down, only to see I hadn’t grabbed my cool MANLY jersey.  But this.  CLICK HERE.

I know they must have been TOTALLY INTIMIDATED with that shirt on.  GO TEAM!

The Intimidator,

Jeff

Sunday Rumination (9-21-08)

21 09 2008

Here are my ruminations on the day.

— Left my sermon notebook at the office and didn’t realize it till I went to bed last night to study it.  Sabrina was gone to a ladies retreat with some Element women.  NOT a good feeling.  I have my routine and don’t do well outside of it.  YES I know I have a problem.  Thankfully Sabrina was on her way back from the retreat and went by the office to pick it up.  I studied it on my computer then went over it in my notebook this morning.

— 475 today.  Seemed like LOTS of our regulars were out today.  Broken record I know but, we’re out of room.

— Didn’t feel great about the message today.  Thought I delieverd MUCH better in first service than second.  Not sure why, just one of those feelings.

— I was nervous about this message cause I felt like it would have been a great one for (this is going to sound wrong) a pastors or church leaders conference.  NOT that I’m qualified to speak at a pastors conference, but the content was such as it would have fit that.

— The Big Question was:  What makes the church evangelistic?  Most times it is the pastors and church leaders who will determine if a church is evangelistic or not.

— Excited about next Sunday.  Gonna talk about how WE can be evangelistic personally.

— I think we’ve made evangelism WAY more difficult than it has to be.  It is not typically what we think of it to be. Cold call witnessing.  Romans road.  Gospel tracts.  Those can be PART of evangelism but don’t define it.

—  We’ve heard some cool stories lately.  Types of stuff that make doing this all the better.

— Love seeing people file into church.  The lobby in between services is insane.

— Can’t think of much else.  Thanks to the Elementers for being a part.  Thanks to you who follow along.

Following Christ,

Jeff

Teatherball Champion

19 09 2008

Wednesday morning Jonah about went into panic mode when he couldn’t find his glove.  NOT gloves (plural) but A glove.  It wasn’t cold.  In fact it was going to be in the 70′s.  I said “What do you need a glove for?”  He said “Teatherball”.  Teatherball?  Yeah, apparently you can hit the ball a LOT harder and DOMINATE the playground with a glove for your hitting hand.  He takes it out of his backpack each recess so he can play.  Umm, I think he got Sabrina’s competitiveness.  I know I’m not like that.

Dominate,

Jeff

Caught not Taught

18 09 2008

I can tell my kids what I want them to do till I’m blue in the face and they may not do it.  If I show them what I want them to do they are MUCH more likely to do it.  I truly think that the shaping of our kids’ lives is WAY more caught than taught.  If I want them to pray, they need to see me pray.  If I want them in the Word, they need to see me in the Word.  If I want them to be polite, generous, kind…you get the picture.  Well, the other day I had a caught moment.  Through living out some random acts of kindness we challenge Element Church to do, Makalah wanted to do one of her own.  The other day she asked if we could take cookies to the fire department.  SO, while I was at work Sabrina and her made a big batch of chocoloate chip cookies.  I came home from the office a little early and Makalah, Mariah and I delivered them to the firehouse.  The girls were SO proud and the firemen were VERY accomodating.  I was a very proud dad that day and they can’t wait to do it again.  Here are the pictures of the girls sitting in the front seat of the fire truck after they got the tour of the facility and machines.  Remember, life is more caught than taught.

Throwing,

Jeff

Varsity Fusion

18 09 2008

At our staff advance back in August we made a MAJOR move in our student ministries.  We knew that we were missing a major segment of people in their college and twenty something age range.  At the time we had a jr. high ministry night, then a high school mixed with college ministry night.  In the decision to move Curtis to our college pastor and Andy to both student groups we recognized it was going to be WAY to much for Andy to handle as a volunteer.  SO, each staff pastor and also one of our adult volunteers are on a rotation to speak at Varsity youth.  My night was Tuesday night.  Andy sets up the themes for us all and right now we are going through the Parables of Jesus’ ministry.  I spoke on the rich fool from Luke 12.  I had a great time hangin’ out with the students and helping out Andy.  I CAN’T WAIT for Andy to be on full time, but until then we’ll keep helping him out.  We had 10 students last night.  Here are a few pics of them hangin’ out afterward.

Back in youth,

Jeff

New Location Update

17 09 2008

Things are continuing to move.  WE STARTED DRYWALL TUESDAY!  The electricians were out most of the day today working on the lights for our worship center.  We REALLY need anyone with drywall experience to come out to our worknights.  Our next one is Thursday and Friday from 6-9 PM and Saturday from 9-4 PM.  Drywall is our next HUGE hurdle.  Plumbing is coming along and we REALLY appreciate our plumber helping us out.  Here are the latest update pictures.

Working,

Jeff

Lobby Additions

17 09 2008

We added two flat screens to our lobby 2 weeks ago.  We run our announcement loop and countdown on them pre-service, we also run live video of the service on them through each service.  We put live audio now in the lobby as well.  Here are two pictures of the tv’s from my phone on Sunday.
