ELEMENT CHURCH HAS MOVED!

19 08 2008

Hey Element Church! Well, the move of our offices and student ministries is official.  Our offices are now at 600 E. Carlson St., Suite 300.  Our student ministries also have their own VERY large room now as well and JV Fusion will meet out there tomorrow night for the first time.  SUPER stoked about that for Andy and Curtis.

Monday we spend the entire day moving all our office and storage unit stuff to the new location.  MAN it was like a walk down memory lane.  It was surreal leaving our office.  God totally provided that space for us in May of 07′.  It was PERFECT for this little fledgling church getting her legs on the ground.  Little did we know that in a year it would not be big enough to house our needs.  It was actually hard moving out.  That little office was the beginning of Element Church.  The First Friday prayer times we had there before launch I’ll never forget.  The early staff meetings where we made decisions that scared us to DEATH.  The moments of joy where we’d hear testimonies, receive checks in the mail or celebrate what God did on Sundays.  It was home.  But the reason it was home was because God was with us.  He called us to be there.  And now He has called us to move on.  We’re making new memories now.  And, someday I think this new location will see us go too.

It was cool to see some old set designs.  Props for dramas.  Purchases that didn’t pan out for the idea we had.  God has been good.  Crazy!  Our new space is just a big open room so we had to put up some dividers and make some makeshift privacy.  It is HUGE compared to our old office and we love the space.  Below are some pictures of our move and some of the new location.  Come stop by and see our new digs.  If you want the slides to move faster just press the “+” sign or you can click the slideshow and it will take you to an online gallery.

Moved,

Jeff

Book Review: Wild Goose Chase

19 08 2008

I just finished the book Wild Goose Chase (www.chasethegoose.com). This book was written by Mark Batterson who pastors National Community Church in Washington D.C. I first heard of Pastor Batterson through the blog world and then this past Spring read his first book called “In A Pit With A Lion On A Snowy Day”. I enjoyed his first book so much that I really didn’t know what I would think of his second book. Goose Chase didn’t disappoint and definitely didn’t suffer from a sophomore slump.

The premise of the book stems from a name that the Celtic Christians had for the Holy Spirit. They called him An Geadh-Glas or the Wild Goose. “And while the name may sound a little sacrilegious, I cannot think of a better description of what it’s like to pursue the Spirit’s leading through life than Wild Goose chase”, says Batterson. Batterson’s writing style and imagery definitely fit my reading style. It wouldn’t be difficult to sit down in a day and read the entire book.

Batterson tells a story of going to the Galapagos islands and seeing amazing animals in their natural habitat. Animals who were being what they were created to be. Wild, untamed, adventurous, etc. He then shares of getting back home to D.C. and going to the zoo with his family. He says “I’m ruined for zoos. It’s not the same seeing a caged animal. It’s too safe. It’s too tame. It’s too predictable.” He shares about a thought he had while at the zoo which catapults you into the meat of the book: “I wonder if churches do to people what zoos to do animals?…Jesus didn’t die on the cross to keep us safe. Jesus died to make us dangerous.”

There are six cages Batterson lists that keep us from chasing The Goose. (Remember the Wild Goose is the Holy Spirit. Not being sacrilegious but quoting the Celtic Christians term for Him.) For each cage Batterson shared an analogous story from a Biblical character who busted out of their cage to chase the Goose.

Cage #1: The cage of responsibility — “God ordained passions tend to get buried beneath day to day responsibilities”

Cage #2: The cage of routine — “At some point in our spiritual journey, most of us trade adventure for routine.”

Cage #3: The cage of assumptions — “”I’m too old. I’m too young. I’m underqualified. It’s too late.”

Cage #4: The cage of guilt — “As long as you are focused on what you’ve done wrong in the past, you won’t have energy left to dream Kingdom dreams.”

Cage #5: The cage of failure — “…sometimes our plans have to fail in order for God’s plans to succeed.”

Cage #6: The cage of fear — “We need to quit living as if the purpose of life is to arrive safely at death.”

It would have been simpler for me to underline the lines that didn’t impact me cause I felt like I wanted to underline everything. I love books that can offer great lines, statements and stories that stick in your head and speak to your heart. I thought of specific people who are living out what Batterson was talking about, and I was challenged to personally live out the Wild Goose chase. There is a ton of specifics I could write about the book but just don’t have blog time to do so.

If you pick up Wild Goose Chase I think you’ll be challenged to get out of the cages you’re in and recklessly pursue the Holy Spirit. I know it was a challenge to me and found myself seeing cages in my own life that I need to break out of. If you enjoy being challenged in your faith, you’ll love Wild Goose Chase.

Chasing,

Jeff

Element Church – Help Wanted!

17 08 2008

Hey Element Church!  Tomorrow we’re going to be moving our office stuff from Lincolnway to Carlson.  We’ll be starting at 9 AM and going till we’re doing.  If you are available tomorrow and want to help, just meet us at the Lincolnway office.  If you have a pickup or trailer you can pull, that would be awesome as well.

We’re also going to plan on this weekly schedule of working at the new location.  Tuesday, Thursday, Friday evenings from 6-9 PM and Saturday from 9 AM – 4 PM.  If this changes we’ll let you know and we’ll also send out the building email but we’re looking at this schedule for the time being.  This will give ample opportunity for people to serve.  If there is anyone who wants to work during the day or on another night besides this and you are skilled in framing and/or sheetrock, please let us know and we’ll hook you up.

Ready to work,

Jeff

Sunday Rumination (8-17-08)

17 08 2008

Hey Element Church! A great day at church today. Here are my ruminations on the  happenings.

— 410 in church today. We’ve been consistently at that # all summer. Anxious to see what happens in the Fall and moving into the new location.

— Spoke on money today. Never easy. It wasn’t a tithing/giving message more than a message about how we manage and view our money/possessions. I firmly believe until God has our wallet he doesn’t fully have our heart.

— I’ve made some MAJOR money mistakes in my life and my wife and I have definitely made some in our marriage. We are a work in progress and trying to experience God’s best for us in this.

— This subject always challenges me. Talked a lot about contentment today. That is a convicting one in my life.

— Had a good group of first time guests today again. We have had a LOT of guests this summer. And not out of town ones.

— The band kicked off the service with “Money” from Pink Floyd. That is a TOUGH song to sing and play and they did a great job.

— We’ve had fun doing the rock songs to kick off each service. Next week’s song is a classic.

— The worship set today was perfect. I thought Adam’s song selection couldn’t have fit better. We sang the Cruz original “Let Your Kingdom Come” again today. Such a good song written specifically for last weeks message and our series.

— Had a noon movie today in our worship theater. To say we are frustrated is a massive understatement. I didn’t know about it until after 2nd service was done. Grant knew but didn’t tell me. I thanked him later for not telling me. It would have affected my message I think.

— Grant said it was pretty crazy today. Let me tell you. My team does an UNBELIEVABLE job! They make sure this thing goes round and do it so well that I don’t have to worry about it. Thanks team!

— Our volunteer team absolutely rocks it. The tear down crew has been amazing lately. We our out super quick today. I haven’t pulled the trailer or been in set up for three weeks and I think they are doing better without me. GREAT JOB VOLUNTEERS!

— Gas buy down is in 2 weeks. Get signed up via email or at church if you want to participate.

— We’re moving our offices and our youth ministry this week. We’ll no longer have our offices at 1011 E. Lincolnway but will be moving to our new location at 600 E. Carlson. Our offices will be in the old furniture store out there.

— Not sure on the work schedule at the new location yet. We’ll nail something down this week and let everyone know. If you’re not on the building crew email list please email us to get on that list.

— My wife is on a business trip this weekend with her home based business. That left me with the mayhem for the weekend. I brought all 4 kids to church by myself for the first time I can remember. I’ve always been at church hours before my wife. The kids were great AND I got to dress my girls in whatever I wanted. Couldn’t pass up the opportunity to show our colors. BOOMER SOONER!

— I think that’s it. If I think if anything else I’ll add an addition.

Following Christ,

Jeff

Work Day: Element Church

16 08 2008

YO Element Church!  Finished our work day today with some good progress.  Had a few glitches which caused us not to get as far as we would like.  We did some final demo/removal and a lot of prep work to start putting up framing.  Here are some pics of what was happening today, also some pics of the new office and youth area we’ll be using temporarily until the buildout is done.  We’ll be working as much as we can in the following weeks so we can get this thing moving.  Let us know when you can help.  Enjoy.

Ready to work again,

Jeff

New Location Update on the Update

15 08 2008

YO Element Church! We met with our contractor last night and re-set some work times for Saturday. We’ll be working 8 AM – 8 PM on Saturday. Element will provide the lunch. You can come and go anytime but those are the hours we’ll be open for work. If you have any framing experience or knowhow we can definitely use you. If you are not a manual laborer or skilled we do have some window cleaning and other cleaning that needs to be done. We also decided to start moving our office stuff tomorrow as well. If you aren’t into cleaning or skilled labor but can move stuff, we’d LOVE your help on that. We can use any pickups or trailers to haul stuff in. We’ll put as much as we can in the Element trailer. Alright, if you have any questions just email us. Thanks.

Ready to work,

Jeff

New Location Update

14 08 2008

Hey Element Church!  Where do I begin?  Lots of news to update here.  And my how things are going to change quickly.  Ok, here are the happenings around the new location.

#1 We’re moving our offices and Fusion out to the new location on Monday.  WHAT?  Yeah, same feeling here.  Last week the owners called and said they have some unused, finished space we could move into until our buildout is done.  Said they’d work us out a deal.  Turns out the furniture store closed down next door to us and another large 5,000 square foot finished area with bathrooms is empty too.  They offered either one to use.  We immediately wanted both spaces so we could move Fusion out there and give them their own space.  We asked, they gave us a price, we said no.  We gave them the amount we felt comfortable paying (basically what we are paying now for our office space) AND THEY TOOK IT!  SO, on Monday we are moving all of our offices out to 600 Carlson.  Anyone who would like to help can join us at our current office at 9 AM.

#2  We met with our contractor last night at our new location.  He is excited, as we all are, to get started.  He asked if we could come out again tonight with 4 – 5 guys who could be some “team leaders”, basically people he can show what needs to be done so they can show other volunteers what to do.  We have 5 guys coming out tonight to meet with our contractor.  All our supplies are being delivered at 4 PM today.  Last night we started setting up chairs to see what it would look like.  OH MAN did it get me excited.  I thought I had some pictures but I must of lost them.

#3  Saturday will be our first work day.  I believe Terri is sending out an email to everyone on the list.  We are going to start putting up studs for the walls.  CRAZY.  We will be starting at 9 AM and you are free to stay as long or short as you want.  We do want to get all the windows and front of the building cleaned up too.  For the walls you’ll need some sort of skill with tools.  (That means I’ll be very limited)  We’ll need some razors or something too to get all the stickers off the windows.  Anyway, that is the latest update.  So, next week we’ll be on site at 600 E Carlson for offices AND youth.  Worship team practice will be there as well.  Exciting stuff.

Pumped,

Jeff

How could you say no?

14 08 2008

This is from last Saturday when my mom and dad and I took all the kids to the park while Sabrina went to the spa for a spa day.  She’s had the gift certificate since Christmas and kept making appointments but had them canceled.  She finally got her chance to go with Terri.  I discovered that Jaydah LOVES the swing.  How could anyone say no to this face?

Job Descriptions

13 08 2008

Hey Element Church!  I am not a great delegating personality nor am I a micro manager.  I told the guys on the team, If I begin to micromanage it means I’m not happy with the direction of your ministry or you just need to get your butt in gear.  :)   As we were approaching Grant coming on staff I put together a job description for him.  As a joke I sent home with Terri a fake document.  You can view it below.  I got a good chuckle out of it this morning.  Thought you would too.

Staff Retreat Update

13 08 2008

Hey Element Church! WOW, what a week. Sunday afternoon we left for Estes Park, CO to stay at the YMCA of the Rockies for two days and nights of planning and seeking God for the direction of Element Church. I’ve never been on a planning retreat nor have I ever led one so I didn’t know what to expect at all. Well, our time together was more beneficial than I even thought going in. We had some great times of prayer for Element and for each other. We got our entire year mapped out as far as sermon series and outreach events. We made some MAJOR shifts in some staff roles (share more of that later). Set some stinkin’ scary goals and dreamed some dreams that if they come true, I might need a new pair of paints.

I can’t tell you how much I love the men who are on our Lead Team. I literally trust them with my life. They are with me “heart and soul” and it makes what I do SO MUCH EASIER. I was moved to tears a few times in our prayers as I thought about the fact that God asked me to do this. For the last 2 years of this process I have continually felt like Solomon “I am like a little child who doesn’t know his way around.” If we don’t have God’s blessing, we are doomed. I completely believe that. I don’t want to do ANYTHING outside of God’s desire for Element Church. NOT God’s desire for ANY OTHER CHURCH but Element. Some folks need to realize that God’s desire for church “A” is not his desire for church “B”. I need to realize that sometimes.

Here are a few pics of our trip. The setting was amazing! I can’t wait to start implementing the things we talked about and reaching toward the vision God gave us. Element Church, the men who work for me and minister to you are INCREDIBLE. You are blessed!

Being blessed,

Jeff
