Devotional Thoughts…

31 07 2008

Hey Element Church!  Haven’t done this in a while so I thought I’d share some thoughts from my daily devos.

1 Corinthians 2:4-6 — I never noticed this before.  It appears Paul preached differently to different audiences.  A “deeper” message was preached to those who were mature.  When among or speaking to those who aren’t mature in Christ he preached differently.  When we are addressing people who don’t know Jesus, we must do so in a way they can understand and relate to.  We must preach JESUS AND HIM CRUCIFIED.  There comes a point when depth needs to come from our own personal study, NOT from the preacher one time a week.

Romans 2:7 — What do I seek after?  I want to seek after the glory and honor and immortality God offers.

Romans 4:21 — That’s the attitude I want.  Sure seems like sometimes we are partly convinced.

Romans 6:6 —  Do we really believe/live that?  That is a powerful verse folks.

Romans 9:3 — That verse blows my mind.  Can any of us say that?

1 Corinthians 3:12 — Paul was speaking against arguments the people were having with each other.  Basically “I like Paul’s church!”  “I like Apollos’ church!”  Much like the arguments we have today.  Traditional vs. Modern  Loud vs. Quiet  Technology vs. No technology.  I love what Paul says here, and I hope I’m not mis-interpreting it.  This is how I took it anyway.  AS LONG AS THE FOUNDATION IS JESUS THE METHOD ISN’T THE ISSUE.  Anyone who builds on the foundation of Jesus can use gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay or straw.  The test, Paul says, is not determined now but on judgment day.  Method shouldn’t be our issue.  MESSAGE is always an issue.

1 Corinthians 4:3 — I LOVE that verse.  We’ve GOT to be more concerned about what God thinks about us than ANYONE else.  That goes for pastors who are afraid to stand up for the vision and for Christians who are afraid to tell their family, etc. etc. etc.

1 Corinthians 4:20 — Amen!  It sure seems like it’s more talk though.

Studying,

Jeff

Five Mistakes We Make As Church Planters (or pastors)

31 07 2008

I think there are some common areas as church planters/pastors where we are prone to making mistakes. It’s not that we always make these mistakes but I think we are prone to them. We are tempted to make these mistakes if we’re not careful.

Here at Element we are fast approaching one year of ministry in Cheyenne. God has already done SO MUCH more than I could have ever imagined in Element Church. I am ABSOLUTELY humbled to be a part of this, and it blows my mind that He wants to use me. **Sidenote: Could it be a ploy of our enemy to always make us question whether God wants to use us?** I was thinking the other day about mistakes I am prone to, and I think that a lot of other pastors are as well. There are probably more than 5, but here are 5 mistakes we make as church planters/pastors. (no particular order)

5. The we need…syndrome: We’ve GOT to have a (insert ministry name ie. youth group) so lets make “so and so” the youth leader. As a pastor, especially a planter, we need to learn something. It is better to have NO ministry at all, than to have a bad leader in a bad ministry. I would MUCH rather not offer a youth ministry for a while, than to offer one with a bad leader or offer a bad ministry. In trying to keep your church from being wounded, you may end up wounding a good leader who’s been put in the wrong position and you still end up wounding your church too. This mistake is ALWAYS a temptation.

4. The we should… syndrome: I’ve seen on LOTS of church plant web-sites say something similar to the following “We’re a new church that offers, this, this and this AND soon we’ll be offering much more” and they include their lists of what they’ll be offering. One of the mistakes we’re tempted to make is to be all things to all people. As a new church you want EVERYONE to come to your church and you’re almost willing to do EVERYTHING to get them there. We should have this, and this, and this, and this, and then they, and they, and they will come. You don’t HAVE to have a women’s ministry. You don’t HAVE to do what your old church did. You don’t HAVE to do ANYTHING except what God wants you to do. There is nothing wrong, ESPECIALLY when starting a church, to do only a few things. This is SUCH a big mistake temptation. If you try to do too much too soon you’ll end up accomplishing nothing. AND you’ll also make mistake #5 in the process. The old axiom “Keep it simple stupid” applies SO much to church planting. This was a BIG learning moment for us. We were on our way to making this mistake before learning it. And it is STILL a temptation.

3. The when we…syndrome: A MAJOR mistake we make is saying “Well, when we have more people…” “Well, when we have more money…” “Well, when we have a building…” Don’t get me wrong, you can do more things with more people. You can do more things with more money. And you can do more things with a building. BUT WHAT ARE WE GOING TO STINKIN’ DO NOW? If you have five people, what will you do? If you have 50, 500, 5000? If you’re church is called by God to be where you are at, you have been placed there for just such a time as this. DO SOMETHING! We pastors, ME INCLUDED, are great at this. The when we syndrome. If you don’t use your now, God will never give you a when! Now that dog’ll hunt! There will never be a big enough church, fat enough account or beautiful enough building. Once you have it, there is always more.

2. The we can’t…syndrome: Why not? I think many churches don’t see God’s blessing because they live in the can’t of our humanness and not the CAN of our God. This kind of goes with #3. There comes a time as a church when we’ve got to be willing to look beyond the possibility of failure and into the capability of God. If we’re not willing to fail, we’ll never be capable of succeeding. Did Peter fail when he sunk in the water or was he just the only one willing to try? Was Peter the only one to deny Christ, or the only one willing to show up at the high councils courtyard? Now, we shouldn’t just try things for trying sake, BUT, if God is moving us to do something DO IT. I’d much rather try something that doesn’t work, than look back always wishing we had tried.

1. The we did…syndrome: Hmm, this is a tough one. Look at what WE did. Look at the church WE grew. Look how much better WE are. Look at what WE built. God gave me Isaiah 55 just after we were called to plant Element in Cheyenne. I call it Element 101. All of our core values are found in this passage. I’d love to go over them each but that’s for another post. As I read this passage and God was speaking to my heart I was thinking, “MAN, through Element people will find life. They’ll be connected into family. Their lives will be changed. Worship will take place. People will have their significance awakened and we can serve one another.” But I was STRUCK THROUGH THE HEART with the last verse of chapter 55. “These events will bring great honor to the Lord’s name; they will be an everlasting sign of his power and love.” WE DON’T DO SQUAT! If for some reason our churches make an impact, people receive life, lives are changed, significance awakened, may it bring glory to the LORD’S name and no one else. May I, as the leader here, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS give God all the credit.

Praying to avoid these mistakes,

Jeff

5 Reasons I’m STOKED about church this week

29 07 2008

5. New sermon series is starting. Rock Band. HERE is the You Tube link if you want to share the promo as an invite. We’re gonna talk about “Livin’ Loud” I got my first two sermons pretty much done. We’re opening with commitment and then talking about prayer. How do I keep from being a one hit wonder in my Christian journey? Come to Rock Band to find out.

4. Communion. We get to share communion together this week. I always enjoy that.

3. It will be only two days until my family is home.

2. The opening of service. TRUST ME, you’ll just have to be there.

1. Not many moments of this year will top a moment we’ll have this Sunday. Saturday is Pastor Grant’s last day working for Frito Lay. I think it’s been 16 years working for them. He followed the call of God and COMPLETELY and LITERALLY risked it all coming here to Cheyenne so that we could have a Connections Pastor. Grant came not knowing when he’d be hired full time or even IF he’d be hired. He took a pay cut and moved his family here. Well, as of Sunday, August 3rd The General will be a full time paid pastor at Element Church. It is VERY surreal for me. We are going to be officially commissioning Grant into the ministry on Sunday with a special time of prayer over him and his family. I AM TOTALLY STOKED ABOUT THAT! You won’t want to miss it. Not sure I’ll get through it without a few tears. Can’t wait to do this with other pastors that we’ll be moving into full time ministry. Grant, this will be a special day. Thanks bro for taking the risk to come to Cheyenne. Can’t imagine doing this without ya.

STOKED,

Jeff

New Location Update

28 07 2008

Hey Element Church!  I don’t know all the right terms but Terri talked to “the guy” who is reviewing our plans at  the city today.  We’re expecting something by the end of the week.  He was working on it today and would be through the week so PLEASE keep praying.

Praying,

Jeff

Element Church: Sunday Rumination (7-27-08)

27 07 2008

It was a great day at Element Church today. Here are my ruminations.

— 407 today in attendance. Had a hefty dose of first time guests again today. That’s encouraging to see in the summer time.

— Actually had more in first service today than second I think. Seemed like it anyway.

— Had a local pastor from here in town visiting while he was on vacation from his church. That was cool. Appreciated him and his family coming.

— Today we concluded the One Prayer series. Pastor Steven Furtick brought the heat today on his one prayer “Lord, make us audacious!” The timing of his message and how it fit what we are facing as a church was priceless. Dude can preach. I REALLY enjoyed this series.

— I enjoyed doing the month long prayer and Scripture reading. Maybe we’ll do that again sometime.

— I felt that the three messages went very well together. It was awesome to hear from two other pastors on what their one prayer is for the church.

— Rock Band is our next series. I am VERY excited about this series. HERE is a link to our promo video on YouTube. Use it as an invite and email it out to your friends.

— You won’t want to miss the start of church this Sunday. Don’t be late.

— Adam was gone on vacation today. Weird not having him there.

— Nate Brennan filled in and did a GREAT job. Element, you are totally blessed to have the musicians and leaders you do. To ALL the band, THANK YOU! SUPER job.

— Had another volunteer step up today to start pulling the trailer and that is HUGE! Since we started doing previews in July of 07′ I’ve been pulling the trailer and setting up every Sunday. It’s becoming too much for me and Jerry James has stepped up to assume that role. I can’t tell you how much that means to me. It’s terribly hard for me to focus on the message each Sunday when I’m focused on loading the trailer and setting up church. There will be some Sundays when Jerry can’t pull it but he is willing to let us use his diesel pick up when needed. If anyone out there is willing to be a “fill in” trailer guy please email me! This is a big step I think for me. It will be weird not being there all the time but it just needs to happen. Thanks Jerry!

— THE AC WORKED TODAY! At least for a while. When we got there at 6 it was running and cool. 9 AM service it was GREAT. When Pastor Furtick started preaching in 2nd service I noticed it was starting to get warm so Grant and I went to check it. Sure enough it wasn’t set to run long enough. We’ll get that fixed. Just glad we don’t have to move everything again.

— WOW, what a difference set up and tear down was today. I think it’s just getting used to the new theater set up, AND we had some extra hands. We can ALWAYS use extra hands in set up and tear down.

— I announced today that our fire egress drawings have been submitted to the city and now it is all in their hands. PLEASE PRAY for favor with the city and approval of our building permit. We’ve raised $45,000 for The Climb so far. Please pray about what God wants to do through you financially for The Climb. I hope to announce great news soon about our permits. We’ll keep you posted.

— My family comes back in 9 days. Can’t tell you how much I miss them. I call Makalah my “care bear” and I call Mariah “my princess”. Sabrina told me yesterday that the girls said “I bet daddy really misses his care bear and his princess.” Made my heart melt. This has been the longest I’ve been away from any of them.

— I think that’s it. Long post huh? Heading to hang out with friends tonight.

Following Christ,

Jeff

One Prayer (Final Day) - Element Church

27 07 2008

Hey Element Church!  Today is the final day of our journey together.  28 days of praying, fasting and reading Scripture together.  I hope this has been a benefit to you.  I failed to post on Friday or Saturday my thoughts.  Today we’ll lump all those together.  Today’s prayer is “Lord, make us audacious!”  We’re going to listen to a sermon by Steven Furtick today at church.  You can check out Acts 26-28 online HERE.  Here are my thoughts:

Acts 26:6 — Paul’s arrest and hatred from the Jews rested in his belief in the fulfillment of the law they were so adamant about.  EVERYTHING in the Old Testament pointed to Christ.  In fact, on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24 Jesus explains from the books of Moses and ALL the prophets the promises he came to fulfill.  Everything was set up for the Jews to experience the fulfilling of God’s promise to them, yet most of them missed it.  Paul’s hope was in the fulfillment of those promises through Jesus.

Acts 26:7-8 — The Jews shared the same hope as Paul, they just didn’t believe it had come yet.  And they didn’t believe because they believed Jesus was dead.  I love Paul’s question in v. 8 “Why does it seem incredible to any of you that God can raise the dead?”

Acts 26:18 — Paul’s purpose statement.  He stated he was sent to the Gentiles to “Open their eyes, so they may turn from darkness unto light and from the power of Satan to God.  Then they will receive forgiveness for their sins and be given a place among God’s people, who are set apart by faith in me.”

Acts 26:20 — Paul’s message wasn’t just to turn to repent and turn to God but to “produce fruit in keeping with repentance”.  To live as if you’ve been saved.  We need to take note of that.

Acts 26:24-32 — Great exchange of words between Festus, Paul and King Agrippa.

ACTS 27

Key verse of this whole chapter Acts 27:25 — The boat Paul was on was in a fierce storm and the men were afraid.  Paul had received a vision the previous night from God that they would all survive.  Paul says “So take courage!”  WHY?  “For I believe God.”  THAT’S IT!  We can have courage too WHEN WE BELIEVE GOD!  Not believe IN God, but BELIEVE HIM.  Believe what He says He will do in, for and through us.

ACTS 28

Acts 28:17-20 — Paul arrives in Rome and calls all the Jewish leaders together to address them.  He tells them “I am bound with this chain because I believe that that the hope of Israel — the Messiah…” EVERYTHING up to this point ALL Jews would be ok with, “…has already come.”  UNTIL THEN!

Acts 28:21-22 —  They were at least willing to listen for all they had heard was that this movement as denounced everywhere.  They hadn’t been poisoned yet by the Jewish leaders who were so opposed to Jesus.  Ever noticed that the Jews who were MOST opposed to Jesus were the ones who actually knew Him?  It was the Jerusalem Jewish leaders that hated Jesus.  It was the leaders who experienced Jesus everyday, and the people they led, who tried to stop what Jesus did.  And they tried to no avail.  How many times I wonder, is it the church, WHO HAS JESUS, which tries to stop what Jesus is doing?  WOW!

Acts 28:23-25 — Paul explained through the law of Moses and the books of the prophets about Jesus.  He used the very Scripture they held hope in, to reveal their hope was fulfilled in Jesus.  Some believed, others didn’t.  What is our responsibility?  To boldly preach the Word of God.  To proclaim freedom for the captives.  To offer Jesus who can turn people from darkness unto light, and from the power of satan unto God.  That is ALL we can do.  OFFER salvation.  Some will believe, others will not.  It is NOT our obligation to make sure everyone is saved.  It IS our obligation to do our best to make sure that EVERYONE is given an opportunity.

Believing,

Jeff

6 Jr. High Boys and two youth pastors…

26 07 2008

Were driving on a jr. high youth trip. There is NOTHING more peculiar in this world than jr. high boys. They were cracking me up. Today I had the great privilege of being a sponsor on a youth trip to Water World in Denver. I’ve NEVER been a sponsor, I’ve always been the youth pastor, so today was fun. Andy is doing a GREAT job with the jr. high and was proud to watch him be the youth pastor today. Let me share a few of the funny quotes we heard today, again, from jr. high boys.

jr. high boy — “I don’t think I want to get married yet.” Really? Andy and I agreed that was a good thing.

jr. high boy — “If I married a super model I might have 5 kids.” LOL that one cracked me up. It was NO kids unless he married a supermodel, then he might have 5.

jr. high boy — “Can you roll down the window.” other jr. high boy — “EEEW it’s coming through my shirt!” (as he held his shirt over his nose) Do the math.

We heard a couple rousing renditions of some songs. If we could somehow harness the energy of jr. high boys in to propulsion for our vehicles we wouldn’t have an oil crisis.  I know there is more funny stuff that happened today, but I’m totally WIPED from hanging with them all day.  Don’t know how I did it as a youth pastor.

Had a great time. Can’t wait for tomorrow!.

Jeff

One Prayer (Day 25): Element Church

24 07 2008

Hey Element Church!  Only a few days left in our one prayer walk together.  Todays prayer is “Lord, make us relevant.”  We’re shifting our focus on praying for churches today and lifting up all the churches in some local communities over the next couple of days.  Today we are praying for the Pine Bluffs churches.  Pray that people in Pine Bluffs would come to know Jesus and be strengthened in their faith through the ministry of their churches.  You can read Acts 25 HERE online.  Here are my thoughts:

Acts is winding down at this point.  Paul is imprisoned and will eventually end Acts in Rome under house arrest.  There are by now, churches established all over and Jews and Gentiles alike are being saved.

Acts 25:1-9  — This was TWO YEARS after their initial accusations and arrest of Paul.  You’d think they would have forgotten about it, let it go, found new problems to focus on.  Paul couldn’t even continue to stir up trouble in prison.  After two years in prison, the Way was still going strong and the Good News was continuing to be taught and spread to Jews and Gentiles.  I’m reminded of what Gamaliel the Pharisee said in chapter 5 “My advice is to leave these men alone.  If they are planning and doing these things merely on their own, it will soon be over.  But if it is from God, you will not be able to overthrow them.  You may even find yourselves fighting against God.”

Acts 25:10-13  — I think Festus had the same problem Felix had in chapter 24.  “Because he wanted to gain favor with the Jewish people…”  Festus, according to Paul, knew Paul had done nothing wrong.  BUT, the opinion of the people meant more than the opinion of God.

Acts 25:19 — Their problem was “Something about their religion and a dead man named Jesus, who Paul insists is Alive!”  Here in lies the problem.  The Jews would have had NO problem if people would have said Jesus was a good man.  A great teacher.  A prophet.  But if Jesus was alive, HE WAS THE MESSIAH.  And if He was the Messiah it means they are subject to Him, and they didn’t want that.  Still the same today.  People don’t mind if He is a good man, a great teacher or a prophet.  But if we make Him the Messiah there is a problem.  People don’t have a problem with Jesus, until they have to surrender to Him.  Sin, at its tap root, is selfishness.  I’m on the throne.

With the risen Jesus,

Jeff

One Prayer (Day 24): Element Church

23 07 2008

Hey Element Church!  Today is day #24 in our journey.  Our prayer today is “Lord, make us intentional!”.  Please lift up the churches on the calendar today as well.  You can read Acts 24 online HERE.  Here are my thoughts:

Acts 24:1-9  — So the Jewish leaders get a lawyer.  Are they REALLY that desperate?  Talk about being more concerned about an agenda.  Notice the accusations made against Paul.  1.  Troublemaker — really?  Who was he a trouble maker too?  The ONLY people who were opposed to Paul were the RELIGIOUS people.  And THEY were the ones causing trouble.  2.  Stirring up riots — Again, really?  This next one is the one that gets me.  3.  Ringleader of a cult known as the Nazarenes — Wow!  First off, the following his with were now known as “Christians”.  This is so common even today among the religious.  We experienced it some even at Element.  Being accused of being something you absolutely are not.  If they would have really watched and listened, they would have seen that Paul was non of those things but they were clouded by their agenda.  Sometimes if we would listen and watch, we wouldn’t accuse other people of things either when they are not true.

Acts 24:10-13 — Paul describes his actions.  #1 I was worshiping in the temple.  #2  I never argued.  #3  Nor did I stir a riot.  He put the responsibility back on the religious leaders.

Acts 24:14-15 — I LOVE this statement.  Paul didn’t back down from ANY TRUTH!  “But I admit that I follow the Way, which they call a cult”  Paul was committed to Jesus and His Way even if ALL the religious community called it a cult AND even if it cost him his life.  Our hope is in JESUS and it shouldn’t matter what anyone thinks about that or what we’re accused of.

Acts 24:16 — God will raise everyone to judgment, Paul took that seriously!

Acts 24:24-25 — MAN, this is where so many people are when it comes to the Gospel message.  “When it’s more convenient, I’ll call for you again.”  More convenient?  So many people, like Felix, are familiar with Jesus, they’ve heard of Jesus, they may even want to follow Jesus, but they keep waiting for a time when it is “more convenient”.  Jesus said “If you want to be my follower you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross and follow me.”  Convenience has NOTHING to do with following Jesus.  NOTHING!

Acts 24:26-27 — Felix had the “there is always tomorrow” complex.  He sent for Paul often and talked with him but it went on for two years.  And why did Felix not accept the Way or let Paul out of prison?  V. 27 says that he wanted to gain the favor with the Jewish people.  He was more concerned with mans view of him than God’s.  Again, still VERY common today.

Standing Strong,

Jeff

The Ripple Effect

22 07 2008

Hey Element Church!  I got an email today from someone and asked for permission to share it on the blog.  They agreed as long as I didn’t use their name.  I LOVE hearing stories like this.  It’s what it is all about.  Enjoy!

Pastor Jeff,

I wanted to let you know that I was inspired by your message on Sunday.  I just started reading “The Barbarian Way” the day before.  The two really go hand in hand.  As such, I used the same passage you shared (Jn 10:1-10) and shared it with the kids at the juvenile facility (J.C. Wardle Academy) east of town Sunday afternoon.  I spent most of the time on “getting out of the pen” utilizing quotes from chapter one of the book.   God did His thing, and eight kids prayed to accept Christ, and eight more prayed to rededicate their lives to Christ - they want to “follow the heart of their King!”  Praise God for the power of His amazing Holy Spirit to do great works in the lives of these young people.

WOW!  Praise the Lord.  There is nothing more exciting to me than seeing people accept Jesus!  NOTHING!  And when we can be a part of it “outside the pen” it’s even more exciting to me.  Keep up the good work.

Excited,

Jeff
