The Little Duck #2

24 06 2008

The next meeting another church planter (Damian) shared his 10 things he wish someone would have told him before he planted. This dude is a walking Leadership book, let me tell you. In the first 5 minutes I could tell that he bleeds leadership. REALLY cool to be around.

— Pre-Mature launch is the #1 cause of church plant failures.

— I will either become a healthier leader or I’ll stagnate. Every time I don’t pass a leadership test in ministry, the harder it will be to pass the next one. Church planting will bring out ALL your leadership weaknesses. It’s your responsibility to do something about it.

— God is more interested in me than He is in my church plant. (WOW)

— Be the first option. (If you’re not going to aim to be a church that can/will be peoples FIRST option in looking for a church. Why start one? This is subjective I know. But If you aren’t going to do church in what YOU think is the absolute BEST POSSIBLE OPTION, why do church?)

Much of his stuff was VERY church plant specific so won’t share all. He had some GREAT stuff on launch team vs. ministry partners (Core Group). Had some great stuff on core values. Public Relations. Office life. Great session! Share more later.

Jeff

The Little Duck

24 06 2008

I said in my Rumination I feel like the little duck in the big pond this week. Got some outstanding leaders and church planters around me and here I’ve been asked to give some of my “expertise” on the issue of planting. VERY humbling to say the least. This whole week is geared for us to help Dusty as he plants Connections here in Boise. Kudos to him for setting this up. I think it’s a phenomonal idea to bring in some guys who are doing it and pick their brain. I felt like some of todays sessions were as helpful for me as for Dusty. I LOVE learning, especially learning and being stretched in ministry. I opened up the first session with sharing my 10 things I wish someone would have told me before we planted. I really feel like we avoided a lot of mistakes because of the training and the AMAZING planting coach God blessed us with. I took some notes on some stuff the other guys had to say and here are some thoughts from it. God has been birthing some new ideas and passions in me while I’ve been away already. Great things are in store for Element Church.

One of the guys (Jim) talked about hiring staff in a church plant:

— Hire the person not the position.

— Attitude beats ability every time!

— Ask yourself two questions about them. “Can they do the job?” And “Will they do the job?” Will they is the more important question and is often worth the risk. Someone with all the talent in the world but no “will”, won’t work.

— Don’t hire someone part time you wouldn’t hire full time.

— There is a difference between developing people to do ministry and dumping ministry on them.

— If I have to dream for you, check up on you or ask the questions you should be asking why do I need you? (WOW)

— Don’t hire someone you can’t fire.

— If you have a concern in them now, you’ll have a concern five years from now.

More thoughts later.

Stretched,

Jeff

Sunday Rumination (6-22-08) Monday edition

23 06 2008

Hey Element Church!  Sorry for the delayed Rumination.  I am in Boise, ID taking part in an advisory board for a church plant here.  One of my best friends and college roomates is planting a church here.  Connections Church I am one of three other planters that will be meeting with Dusty this week to give leadership and council on his plant.  I totally feel like I should be the one learning from everyone else.  Dusty is a phenomonal leader, as are the other three guys.  I feel like the small duck in the pond.  Blogging may be a little weak this week due to our meeting.  I’m excited for my vision to be expanded and leadership to be strengthened through the week.  It’s been great to hang out with Dusty already.  Been a while since we got to hang out.  Here are my Ruminations on yesterday.

— LOTS of response to prayer on the issue of divorce.  Many people requested prayer for struggling marriages, and MANY others who already were divorced or divorced and remarried and wanted to make sure they made the correct choices from now on.  This issue BY FAR touches the most people out of all the issues we looked at.

— 434 in church yesterday.  Staying consistent through summer, that is good.

— First service was one of those services.  If you’re a pastor you know what I mean.  Every once in a while you feel like you dudded one.  Which is weird cause I preached the exact same sermon in 2nd service and felt GREAT.  Had good responses after first service which goes to show that it’s not how you feel.  Hard to remember though.

— There is SO MUCH stuff I wanted to talk about on Divorce and just didn’t have the time.  It’s one of those topics I feel would be great for a round table. Digging into the Word.  Hearing other opinions. I felt like one service just didn’t do it justice.  But, what do ya do.  I hope it helped some people and made sense.

— I LOVED doing this series.  I learned so much and felt like my own faith and convictions were stretched and confirmed.  We have some good questions coming in.  Remember to email them to questions @ elementweb dot net.

— We may as well have preached on hell again yesterday…cause it was about that hot again.  We gotta get the AC figured out.

— To say we had some technical difficulties would be an understatement.  Andy said “I don’t think we have enough paper to write down all the things that went wrong today”

— Adam was SUPER sick yesterday.  God really helped him get through and he did a great job.  Even battling all the tech mishaps.  His guitar went out at one point.  I thought he was going to pass out at one point.

— I’m amazed at our volunteers.  I’m usually in the worship center and so I don’t see everyone working.  We have so many people that make this thing work.  Amazing!  THANK YOU to everyone who volunteers.  Each role is so vital.  MAN it blows me away.  We had a few volunteers gone yesterday and it just throws everything out of kilter one just one is gone.  Amazing!  Terri stepped up and filled MANY roles.

— I miss meeting with everyone today.  I enjoy Mondays.  Praying for our church.  Planning.  Getting to hang with all the staff.  They’re probably eating popcorn and watching movies all day with me gone.

— I miss my family already.

— SuperDay this Saturday.  Come out and see us!

That’s it.  I should have time to do some other blogging this week.  Check it out!

Jeff

Lifechoice Baby Bottles

20 06 2008

Hey Element Church! We were one of many churches that were able to partner with Lifechoice Pregnancy Center through the month of May and June in helping to raise funds for their ministry. We encouraged you to take a baby bottle they provided and fill it up with loose change over the month. If you were able to take a bottle, please make sure and get those back to Element this Sunday. We need to get them turned in to LIfechoice as soon as we can. Lifechoice is a wonderful ministry to mothers who are in need of help in making a decision about the life of their unborn child. Lifechoice is one of the local ministries that Element chooses to support financially as well as with our effort and time. Thanks Lifechoice for all you guys do! Hope our baby bottles can make a difference.

Jeff

Fathers Day Gift

20 06 2008

My wife gave me an awesome Fathers Day gift.  I mentioned it on my Rumination blog earlier this week.  It’s a shadow box with some memoirs of my Grandpa Maness who passed away recently.  All of the grandsons who were pall bearers wore one of my Grandpas ties and we got to keep them.  Sab put that in the box.  As well as one of my Grandpas handkerchiefs that were embroidered with his initials for us as well.  Here is a picture of it.  She did a great job!

Blessed,

Jeff

Vacation Bible School

19 06 2008

Hey Element Church. If you’re looking for a good VBS to send your kids too please consider taking them to the VBS at North Christian Church starting Monday, June 23rd. Element Church is partnering with North Christian, along with MANY other churches to serve the community through this ministry. Sabrina and I took our kids to it last year and we were very impressed. You can get any info you need through the church office 635-1316, or you can get info on Sunday at the e:connect table. We also have a serving opportunity by helping set up for their family dinner they put on each night of VBS. They provide a free meal to all families who have kids attending VBS. It’s a GREAT idea and very cool ministry of this particular VBS. If you can help out one night setting up for the dinner, please sign up for that opportunity. If you haven’t got your kids registered please make sure and get that done as well by picking up your registration info.

Following Christ,

Jeff

SuperDay

18 06 2008

Hey Element Church! Coming up next Saturday, June 28th is one of our 4 major serving events of the year. We will be providing 6 giant inflatable games for free to all kids at SuperDay. This is a great opportunity for you to serve the community in a practical way. We have some time slots available for you to serve if you haven’t signed up yet. We served last year with 4 games and had a blast. This year we’re also adding a moms cool down tent where they can nurse or change their children. We fell this will be a great tool during the heat of the day. We have some time slots available for that as well. This is a GREAT chance for us to talk with people, serve, fellowship and be a beneficial part of the community. Check out some pictures HERE from last years event. You can sign up on Sunday at the e:connect table. Hope to see you out there.

Volunteer BBQ

17 06 2008

Hey Element Church!  We have INCREDIBLE volunteers at Element Church and we try to do our best to make them feel appreciated on a regular basis.  This past Friday we had one of those evenings.  The staff put on a all inclusive BBQ for volunteers and their families.  We had about 100 people out for the great evening.  Terri took some pictures of the event.  You can check them out HERE.  Thank you!! to all our AWESOME volunteers.  To everyone who serves on the e:team you guys are amazing.

Thankful,

Jeff

Staff Outing

17 06 2008

Hey Element Church. We’ve had a couple of birthdays among the team and spouses lately. Grant, Andy, Pam and Amber all had birthdays recently. So, today instead of our normal staff meeting we just went out for some time of fun and relaxation. I’m trying to be better about putting fun and breaks into some of our days. I know our team gives A LOT to Element Church, and I want to make sure they are appreciated and get some well deserved breaks. We treated everyone and their spouses to lunch at CB Potts and a game of bowling. The winner of the bowling match won two tickets to see a movie. As soon as I bowled the first ball EVERYONE knew it was no contest. They almost all gave up when they saw my bowling prowess. Since it was SO obvious that I was heads and shoulders above everyone else (not literally cause Grant is like…TALL) I cut them some slack. So I let Adam win by about 50 pins. Seriously, it wasn’t even close. Terri and Pam beat me as well. And Andy. So, pretty much I still beat Grant and the other gals. HERE are the pictures of the day. (Notice Heather using the bowling ramp for kids)

Having Fun,

Jeff

Fathers Day Bliss

16 06 2008

My wife is an AWESOME cook and some of my favorite things to eat, she knocks out of the park.  I’m not big on desert, HOWEVER, I could absolutely live on coconut cake.  COCONUT CAKE??? I know you’re asking.  It’s not just a cake with coconut on it.  It is oooie gooie heaven.  It is a white cake mix baked to perfection.  Then you pour cream of coconut and sweetened condensed milk over the top.  Top it with whip cream icing and coconut flakes and SHEER paradise appears.  I have a problem eating just one piece.  She made it on Saturday and I COULDN’T WAIT to eat a piece Sunday.  (if you let it sit in the fridge for a day it gets its ooie gooie goodness better)  I thought I’d share a picture of it here on the blog.  Definitely in my top 5 things she makes.  WOW!  AND she’s good looking too!

Full,

Jeff
