WiBo speaker #4 was Darrin Patrick. He is lead pastor at The Journey in St. Louis, MO and the Acts 29 Church Planting Network. He spoke about “idols”.
He started by reading Romans 1:18-23. He then said (speaking of the Fall) We speak of the Fall in regards to sin but it was also an exchange. Man exchanged their object of worship. (God to self)
“We either worship the creator as God or we worship something in HIS creation in HIS place.” Good stuff!
1 John 5:21 Why would John close his entire book, sum up his letter with this verse. Darrin said “Because the way to live out the Gospel is to keep yourself from idols.”
What are idols? “Idols are things we hope in. Things we look to for meaning.”
“All sin finds its root in idolatry.”
How do we know what our idols are? “You typically only know your idols when they are threatened or disturbed.” GREAT quote
“Sin rises out of four motivations: Power, comfort, approval and control” And that is where we find our idols.
He talked a lot about idols in ministry which is SUCH a danger for pastors. Idolizing a “type” or “success” of ministry rather than CHASING GOD! It was a GREAT talk.
