New Location Update

Hey Element Church!  While I wish I could tell you we’ve got the permit I can’t.  HOWEVER, something very cool did happen today.  Our first lease payment was due tomorrow because our 2 months free had finished.  Our Realtor called the owner to get the exact amount of our first payment.  The owner graciously said “Why don’t we give them one more month?”  WHAT?  That’s right.  We been given at least one more month for free.  PRAISE THE LORD!  That is such a HUGE blessing.  We are currently just waiting on some drawings to submit to the city.  Then they’ll have to approve them.  Anyway, thought that was worth sharing.  Please keep praying for God to grant us favor in this.

Trusting,

Jeff

One Prayer (day 1)

30 06 2008

Hey Element Church!  I hope that many of you will join us these next 28 days to unite ourselves into One Prayer for the church.  I’ve never been a part of a sermon series like this nor have I done anything this intentional with a local church I was a part of to unite for this long of a time with one Scripture, one prayer and one voice.  This idea for One Prayer comes from Ephesians 4:5-6.  Our reading today is from Acts 1.  The prayer and fasting schedule is on the One Prayer calendar.  You can get that here.  If you’re having trouble downloading it let me know.

Today’s prayer is “Lord make us authentic.”

Here are my thoughts on Acts 1:

Acts 1:3 — This thought came to my mind.  If we REALLY want to know if Jesus is “the Messiah”.  If we REALLY want to know He’s alive.  If we REALLY want to know He is the Way, the Truth and the Life, He’ll prove it to us.  V. 3 says that for 40 days he proved to them in many ways that he was actually alive.  People who say they won’t believe because they don’t have proof, probably aren’t opening their eyes to see the proofs He’s trying to give them.  I firmly believe that if you seek, you’ll find.  Why?  Because Jesus will prove Himself to you.  It may not be the proof you WANT but it will be the proof you NEED.  Big difference.

Acts 1:4 — (don’t worry I’m not going to comment on every verse)  Jesus established the importance of waiting on and being filled with the Holy Spirit.  “Don’t leave Jerusalem”  until you’ve been baptized with the Holy Spirit.  How many times have I/we tried tried to do the work of Jesus without the Holy Spirit?  What happens?  The power of the Holy Spirit is PARAMOUNT to the success of God’s church and to the success of each individual believer.

Acts 1:6-8 — The disciples were STILL concerned with an earthly kingdom.  “They kept on asking…” about it.  Jesus brought them back to what He saw as MOST important.  Don’t worry about this earth, you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.  Again, He reiterates the importance of the Spirit in our hearts.  THEN you’ll be my witnesses all over the world.  Be concerned about two things:  1.  The Holy Spirit’s power and control in my life.  2.  Being a witness.  Folks, if we would be concerned with those two things what could happen to our communities?  Homes?  Relationships?

Jesus also establishes what I think is a healthy missions effort.  Jerusalem (home town), Judea (region), Samaria (Country), ends of the earth (foreign missions).  I am a HUGE proponent of being missionaries FIRST to Cheyenne and last overseas.  Do I believe in overseas missions?  Unequivocally!  But we must FIRST AND FOREMOST be about our city.

Final thought on verses 6-8.  I’m going to get a bit ahead of myself here.  Notice what went away from the hearts of the disciples once they were baptized with the Holy Spirit.  No more jockeying for position.  No more seeking an earthly kingdom.  No seeking to be the “greatest”.  Something happened in their hearts through the power of the Holy Spirit that purified some motives.  Peter has a new passion and resolve.  No longer is he swayed by the crowd.  No longer is he concerned with public opinion.  He isn’t even concerned for His life.  Gonna go from commenting to preaching so I better quit.  lol  We’ll look at that coming up.

Those are my main thoughts on chapter one.  If I had to pick one theme on this chapter that Jesus was trying to get across it would be the importance of the Holy Spirit in our lives.  Even in the end of the chapter the disciples sought the counsel of the Spirit on finding a replacement for Judas.

Questions for reflection:

What is the Holy Spirits role in my life right now?  Do I need to surrender some attitudes to Him?  Am I concerned with my “earthly kingdom” more than I am with God’s?  How can I be a better witness to my city?  Am I asking for proof of God in some areas of my life but not willing to accept his revealing?

There ya go.  Make sure to follow your calendar for the churches to pray for.  Also for our daily one prayer for the church.  Love you guys.

Following Christ,

Jeff

Sunday Rumination addition

29 06 2008

422 today.  Didn’t have the count on my original Rumination.  That’s it!

Sunday Rumination (6-29-08)

29 06 2008

Hey Element Church!  Man, we had fun today.  Did church in a whole new way.  Today was the final Sunday of Untouchables and we took 11 questions that were turned in and tried answering them in a fun and creative way.  Here are my ruminations on the day.

— After worship we set up the stage for our own “Tonight Show” flavor in order to take on these questions.  We had “Straight Up with Keenan Fitzgerald”.  Keenan played host and did an AWESOME job!  He put together a monologue that was hilarious.  We did “church signs” and Keenan took us through some real and VERY funny signs.  Adam and the Wholly Rollers played some great transition music then Keenan invited me out and we held a little interview to take on the questions that were turned in.  It was a LOT of fun.  Again, Keenan couldn’t have done a better job.

— I think our little set up helped make the questions flow well too.  It wasn’t just me saying “And the next question was…”

— Adam timed out the service perfectly.  We took on as many questions as we could and Adam timed out the music, videos and everything great. The  band did some cool “Talk Show” music too.

— You’ll be able to watch all of “Straight Up with Keenan Fitzgerald” online this week.

— Thanks Keenan for doing an amazing job today.

— This series has been fun.  I’d like to do a yearly series like this where we take on specific “sins” and talk about what the Bible has to say about them.  Someone asked today when we’re going to take on other untouchables like gossip, materialism, racism, etc.  Made me start thinking.

— Church in the park this Sunday.  10:30 AM at the Lions Park Amphitheater for the whole family.

— SuperDay was awesome yesterday.  So much fun serving the community like that.  Thanks to all who came out to help.  Already talking about how we can make next year bigger and better.  We got to serve literally thousands of people through the inflatable games.

— I announced our involvement in the One Prayer sermon series.  Even though the official series doesn’t start until July 13th, we are starting a One Prayer Calendar tomorrow.  One Prayer was an idea from Pastor Craig Groeschel of Life Church in Oklahoma City.  He asked “How can we unite churches around the world into one sermon series?”  He ended up with One Prayer.  You can check it out here.  There are about 1800 churches now participating and hundreds of thousands of people.  Each local pastor participating is asked to share their one prayer for the church.  Mine is “Lord make us Alive!”  Other pastors from across the country have then submitted their sermons via high quality video and we can choose other sermons to share with our congregation.  We’ll be hearing from Pastor Perry Noble on “Lord make us dangerous” and Pastor Steven Furtick on “Lord make us audacious”.  We’re actually doing One Prayer a month later than most other churches because we already had June planned out.

— Here is where we are taking One Prayer to the next level.  How cool would it be if we as a church joined together for one month to read the same Scripture, pray the same prayers, and fast the same days?  Well, that’s what I’m challenging you to do.  Here is a calendar you can download if you didn’t get one today at church.  Our joint prayers start tomorrow.  The Calendar was one thing to pray for each day.  “Lord make us…”  There are 28 chapters in Acts and we are going to read one chapter for the next 28 days.  I’ll then blog each day about my thoughts on the chapter we read.  Each day also has other local churches that I want us to pray for together.  Tuesdays are the days I’m challenging us all to fast and pray.   So download your calendar and join us in One Prayer.  Check back here tomorrow for the first thoughts on Acts 1.

— The next 28 days are going to be fun.

— That’s about it.  I’m gonna go lay down for a little bit.

Following Christ,

Jeff

Gruesome Greeting

27 06 2008

So Andy and Aubrey were coming by our house to pick up the youth Nintendo Wii game system we had at our house. (I had to make sure it was still functioning properly and the teens hadn’t ruined it)  JV Fusion is having a hangout night tonight.  As they approached the front door I hear Aubrey say “EEEWWWW, WHAT’S THAT!?”  I didn’t think she was talking about Andy so I went out to see what it was.  There on the side of our house by our front door was this.

Two giant moths that….let’s just say they weren’t “talking”.  We’ll keep this G rated.  So I didn’t want two giant moth looking creatures “talking” by my front door so I got the broom and knocked the off the wall, and proceeded to rid them of their lives.

You might say, “That’s not that big!”  And I knew you’d say that so I needed something to compare sizes with.  These things were ginormous.  So I put my wallet on the ground next to this stinkin’ moth.  This thing could have flown off with Aubrey if it wanted to.

Told ya!

Jeff

SuperDay and Sunday (another Superday)

27 06 2008

If you are serving at SuperDay tomorrow just want to remind you to wear your red Element Church t-shirt if you got it.  If you aren’t serving but are going to be out there, please come by and say hello!  This is another small way that Element gets to give back to the community.  Set up begins at 8 AM.  The event runs from 10 AM – 3 PM.

I’m REALLY looking forward to Sunday.  We’re taking on some tough questions.  We are going to do church this week in a way you’ve probably never seen before.  Changing up the pace a little bit and mix it up.  I look forward to church every week and this week is no different.  You won’t want to miss it.

Next Sunday, July 6th we are doing church in  the park with just ONE service at 10:30 AM.  We’ll be meeting at the Lions Park Amphitheater.  Make sure and bring the whole family out to enjoy this family worship service.  We’re planning on a scaled down version of what we normally do.  The band will lead in a few worship songs and we’ll be challenged by a brief message from the Word.  Invite someone to come with you to this relaxed Sunday morning.  Bring chairs and/or blankets for you and your family to sit on.  Feel free to hang around afterwards with your Frisbee, football or for some fellowship (three F’s).

There ya go.  See you guys this weekend.

Jeff

Little Duck Comes Home

27 06 2008

Hey Element Church.  I got back into town on Wednesday evening and have been busy getting prepared for Sunday.  I was so humbled to be on the attack team for Connections in Boise.  Honored that my friend would choose me to offer any kind of advice in church planting.  Here are my final thoughts on the weekend.  Stuff God taught me while we were teaching.

Billy from Soujourn Fellowship in Olathe, KS shared these things about balancing family and church and some general family issues.  He asked his family some questions about ministry life and here are some of their responses.  I think every pastors family faces some of this:

“What do you not like about being in a pastors family?”  1.  Expectations of others.  2.  Exclusion of others “Well you’re in a pastors family so you probably can’t do this.  3.  Being on a pedestal and always in a glass house.

Billy talked about giving approval to his kids in front of other people and how much that means to them.  He shared an illustration from Jesus’ baptism in a totally different take.  Something I never thought of.  When Jesus was baptized, the Father spoke from Heaven and said “This is my Son in whom I am well pleased!”  Typically we think of that being said for the people who were there or for the reader.  He brought up that if Jesus were, as we believe, FULLY human, he would have longed for His Father’s approval.  For Jesus to hear His dad say “I am well pleased” was monumental to his humanness.  I loved that.  Billy said “If Jesus needed it, so do our kids.”

Things the family wished they’d do better:  Say “No!” to things without having to have a reason.  Just because.

He then shared some thoughts from Andy Stanley and things Andy shared about the pastors home.

The real reason Andy says he worked too much and was at home too little was “I was not sure God could be trusted to build as big a church as I wanted Him to build.”  (WOW!)

“I’m willing for you to build as big a church as you can build in my 45 hours, and I will be satisfied with that.  But I promise you, I’m not going to cheat my family.”

“I was commanded to love my wife.  I was never commanded to build the church.”  Jesus says that HE will build the church.

“My observation is that men and women who love the church and don’t love their family have neither great churches nor great families.”  (BINGO)

“The Kingdom of God does not hinge on my ability to put more and more hours into it.  You have graciously invited me to be a very, very tiny part of it.  But at the end of the day, your will will be done, and the Church WILL be built.”

Speaking of family “Never violate the principles of God in order to gain or maintain the blessings of God.”

“The problem comes when we try to trade jobs with Jesus.”

Here are my thoughts on Andy’s thoughts cause I know some people will go to the extreme in their rebuttle of Him.  I believe that many times, we as pastors forget that it is NOT because of our effort that the church works, it is because of the power of the Holy Spirit.  With that said, I also believe in some sort of divine partnership that God wants me to give EVERYTHING that HE asks of me and not anyone else.  I need to do that while not neglecting my personal relationship with Him first, my family second and myself third.  Good stuff.

Little Duck Growing,

Jeff

Little Duck #3

25 06 2008

Hey Element Church! Today was such a great day of planning for Connections and for Dusty. As well as more leadership lessons for me. Damian talked with us about adding value to people and your team. This is an area I think I need to work on. Got some stuff I want to go over our team with. I’ve been taking notes like a mad man this week and this is not even supposed to be for me. Here are some thoughts from the day. (2 of the best things he shared today were graphs that I scribbled down off the white board but can’t duplicate here).

— Lead people differently love all people the same.

— Believe in people. (Most people just need someone to believe in them)

— If you’re lonely at the top you’ve done something wrong. (John Maxwell)

— At the age of 32 men stop thinking generatively and start thinking out of memory. Talked about how to keep creative pockets open in your mind. Good stuff.

— Become obsessed about “us” not “I”.

Jim from The River Church then shared his 10 things he wished someone would have told him before planting.

— You’re going to get shot in ministry. (Boy is that true) Damian said that if he taught in Seminary or Bible college he would talk most people out of going into ministry. That or tell them they need psychological help because they are “wack” to want to go into it. LOL

— People who give the most and sacrifice the most will be the people you least expect it.

— Value people more than what that person can do for you. (YES and WOW)

— Not everyone will like you or will stay in your church. That’s ok!

— Stay with the same vision but maybe say it in a different way.

— Don’t win for your family, help your family win. (WOW) So many times in pastoring we think since we’re doing kingdom work we’re “winning” for our family. What if we helped our families win first? Wow. Got more on family in the next post.

Stretched,

Jeff
